Science states that the 4th dimension is time, so I suppose that any game that displays a concept of time (ie. RTS and FPS) could be considered a 4d game.

Well if there were a 4-d game that means it would not only effect the look and movement of the game characters but it would also be effected by time.
Example: If you were to play a game at night then the game would have a darker setting.

Games nowadays incorporate a weather and time system (like B&W) and some have aging systems. Problem is, time is not an actual element due to the fact that "real-time" means that you have to put in those hours/days/weeks like people do with EQ. Most games have character development that run in an accelerated time or the time is static like MP, where it progressed through one night.

There isn't 2D, 3D or 4D. As we only can see one side. This are exist only on your CPU as it show you the one side but calculate and the other sides, so if you want to have 2D, 3D and 4D you should have a future-monitor that is placed on a desk and it is like a dish. It show the 2,3,4D by showing the images straight to the sky (on the air by laser) and only when you turn your head could see the other sides. Very confusing and with the translation more and more.

The 4th dimension is already incorporated in games. Even if it's fake representations, we can consider it will only be a question of time to have real representations. The really interesting question would be "How will we represent the 5th in order to become even more realistic?" since the modern physical say us there are 11th dimensions.

wouldn't a game like max payne be kind of a 4-d game? since you can slow down time?

I have to agree with vorlin on this one. the concept of 4th dimension gaming would be to actually play it real time. but when thinking about it more, the more issues that are raised. what happens when u quit the game and open it again? can you save the game? would it be playable online due to the time differences? although it is impossible to know if a game will incorporate a 4th dimension its still kinda weird to think about it.

A fourth dimension in gaming eh? Interesting point, I must give you some credit there. Don't you think that would be graphically intense for the systems the general public uses for gaming? Also creating a game with a perception of time that reacts to that time would be a lot of work for such a small feature. Personally, I'm content with Max Payne as is, except for those polygon skips in the videos. And hellbringer, I dont think Max Payne would fall into that catagory because yes you can slow down the time momentarily, but your environment doesn't react to the time of day, or whether its light or dark outside.

Specialist:
Umm ... yeah - MS Flight Sim 200x is one example. It can read your system clock and derive scenery meshes accordingly.Quote:

Well technically, only a select few games have even moved into the 3D realm in my opinion, and those are those that support VR. Mechwarrior 2, 3, and 4, for example all contain code to support a head-mounted-display and head-tracker. That would be true 3D. I would love to get myself an HMD with head-tracker, but VR equipment is still hella expensive. Perhaps in a few years when they catch on, they will eventually come down.
I suppose you could say that some games incorporate time as a crucial element of the game (GTA3), but I don't know that I would call those games of the "4th Dimension". Interesting idea, though.
