How can I really protect my computer against outside intrusion....
DONT USE THE INTERNET!!!
LOCK IT IN A SAFE!!
THROW IT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN!!!
The most obvious answer is installing and properly configuring a good firewall. Are you on a network, or are you asking for a standalone PC connected to the net? There are other items that are essential to protect and secure a PC, including Antivirus software, the closing of non-needed ports, ensuring that your software is up-to-date with patches and hotfixes, etc. You can monitor your open ports with a program called Fport from Foundstone. You can run online scans of your machine to see if you are open to the Net, that type of thing. There are a good number of measures to take to secure a PC...
stick around, kid, you'll learn something.
firewalls, proxys, security updates and anitvirus protection is a good start.
here is a google search of network security for you.
the best way is to learn ways lamers use to attack systems search for these keywords:
(google.com)
1)DOS/DDOS
2)trojan horses
3)exploit
4)sniffer
5)hacking
6)cracking
7)cryptography
8)linux
10)programming

As has been said, use a firewall, either a personal firewall on your machine (if you have one) or use a second machine as a firewall (running openBSD or similar). Secure your operating system, doesn`t matter if its Windows or Linux, just secure the OS. And remember not to do anything silly like opening files sent from unknown people, giving out passwords etc...
....verry funny s0nIc...thanks a lot.........:)
I have an antivirus and today I want to instal a firewall.....thanks for the support all of you.
I don't know a lot of stuff about security and that was the motive why I ask for help....but I know to protect myself when I am online and to don't give my pass, opening unknown files and stuf, I know Social engieneering
I have to agree whith black_death that the most efective method of protection is to know the ways "lammers" use to attack a sistem.
thanks for the links black_death.
I will try to read stuff from there.
If you dont have any money just go to www.webattack.com and just get a free firewall and free antivirus and like the previous members said stay up to date on your updates......better than no protection at all...
If you want to install a firewall. You should begin with ZoneAlarm at http://www.zonelabs.com/ (free and easy to use) then try Outpost http://www.agnitum.com/ (free and powerful).
Check the tutorial forum here, you'll find a lot of useful texts.
Personaly, I have found that the Sygate Personal Firewall works extrememly well. It is very easy to use, free, and works. It is available for download along with another edition to buy at www.sygate.com

Read. Read. Read.
Never be afraid to ask questions.
Don't limit yourself to a handful of websites.
From the people at AntiOnline to GRC to INFOSYSSEC to ZDNet to magazines, info is everywhere.
When you think you know everything is when you find out you don't.
I have just recently installed pc-cillin2002 which includes a personal firewall. It works fine for me at home, and I have just added Zone alarm.I was running a previous version of pc-cillin and when I installed the newer version it picked up a trojan on my machine.
I monitor all my logs when I am online at home and you will be surprised how many intrusions was blocked by pc-cillin.My previous version did not have a personal firewall, so it pays to stay up to date if you want to keep your machine healthy and your data protected from outside intrusion. In the 1 hour I spent online I had 7 intrusion attempts, from which two were of a personal nature.
I personally think you must get the best protection you can afford, because lost data is irreplaceable.

vanman:)
I have to agree with sonIc's first post. That's the only way you can be 100% sure that your PC is safe. :D
Best advice I gave to my Eldest son now 27 going on 28 is "do not poke without a coat" Do not want your system used to birth a bot, system control beyond you learn that when you turn it on you will under new laws being passed be responsible for what ever it may do on th Web, network, sys admin see's more then you think and respect the right of other systems as you want your network or computer respected. Free is a word that has a cost and price it may be spyware, backdoor programs and other exploiting commerical people using you free as the user, so read, understand EULAS (End User License Agreement) TOS (Terms Of Service), and be aware that nothing you do on-line is unknown. Other then the other advice good advice even here on networks freedom has a cost.
If you are on a single computer (not a LAN/WAN), I would suggest removing the TCP/IP binding to NetBIOS. It's fairly useless if you're not connected to some kind of intranet or close facsimile.I have recently removed mine after reading some articles about NetBIOS basically being a "backdoor" into your system if not properly configured for maximum security.
Here are some related websites
