A friend of mine bought a "Hack-protector" online and the product claims to be able to reverse IP adresses and ports if someone tries to hack into your system while you are online, thus making them hack into their own system. My question to you is: DO these work as well as they claim to(or at all) and are they worth the risk?

I don't know the URL. Apparently, it was in a prog. called Rampage Toolz and when he emailed the owner of the site asking a question, thats what he was told.
I guess it's a possibility,but even if it does,I definately wouldn't depend soley on that one thing to protect my system,because it can't and won't stop every attack.The fact that it's not posted in every security forum on the net could suggest something about the quality of it.Actually most of the stuff you're going to run across doesn't even involve intrusion through ports,such as malicious code in downloads and such.There's no one miracle tool that will prevent an attack.It takes a combination of security software,hardware,and even more importantly knowledge of security to have a relatively secure system.If you don't know how to configure your firewall,read logs,stay updated on patches/updates to virus db's and many many more things,you can have all of the stuff in the world that claims to make your computer more secure,and it won't help a bit.
Sorry to say, but for me I don't I want to take a risk bout hacking software. I never trust them. Never spend money doing sth u're not sure bout the result.:)
For the sake of discussion, lets say the tool works as you have described. Now the 'Hacker' that started the attack may be using different methods to hide his identity (poxies, or a hijacked computer). Now this 'tool' kicks in and starts attacking back. First thing that is going to happen is, I believe your friends ISP will pick up on this and at the very least kill your friends internet connection for a breach of it's acceptable use policy. They may even take it farther and report your friend to the authorities which will result in even bigger problems for your friend (remember hacking is illegal). Now, do you really want to risk running a tool which has more potential for harm than for benefit?

Let me get this straight ....you want to stop people from "hacking" into your system, by getting software that will (pretty much the essence of it) hack them back? They're better ways to do it. Like contacting the perpetrators ISP. I fire off about 10 emails on average a day to various ISPs regarding abuse. I know it's tedious but hey, it works.
All of these ideas are in theory, right? or does everyone actually know what they're talking about?

Couple things, first I remember Rampage Tools and I remember scanning it and found a trojan in it. Dunno about your copy, but Mine had a trojan. Second, "hacking-back" is not legal and is a wrong way of going by things. Now, if you hack back and decide to report him, that still isn't right because they can easily say, "Well you did the same to us". Contacting the abuse department of their ISP is definitely the right way to go by things.
I don't know if this Rampage tools program works as advertised, although I don't see why it wouldn't. As far as the moral question of whether or not you should "hack him back" that people seem to be so concerned with, they should keep in mind that HE will be only doing to HIS system what HE intended to do to YOURS. That certainly doesn't make you the badguy.

For the most part, I find a lot of members of this community "know what they're talking about ". The responses in this thread are pretty much factual, most major ISP's frown on people using their services to do less-than-professional things such as port scanning, spamming etc. If you can track back an "attack" to an ISP and report it to the Security people at the ISP ([email protected]), 99% of the time they will deal with the attack because they don't want to be held accountable for any damage the "Hacker, Spammer" is going to do.Quote:

I have to agree with everybody in here, it is not worth the risk that you will be taking if you purchase this product. Like DjM said, "what good is a prohram that has more potential to harm than save?" If the program turns around and hacks the person doing it, then you are no better than the person that was trying to hack you in the first place. As they say " Two wrongs don't make a right." I would find a program or a really good firewall that will log their IP and host name, then send it to their ISP. In that they that person will get caught, and you know you took the proper procedures.;)
The product itself sounds hokey to me.
Well I dont Know if I would buy it, ...but I just "ran into" somthing similar to this , and it did a pretty good job of trying to get back to me... sounds like a fun toy.

I would be afraid also of the possibility of the attacker spoofing an IP, then attacking your machine, meanwhile your machine redirects this attack to some box which has absolutely nothing to do with the attack or defense of your system. Who knows... maybe they'll end up spoofing an IP at CERT's block??? Guess who's going to be in the S#!TTER then! :D

Maybe it's just me, but how can a program make you (the hacker) attack yourself without some interaction with the internet and therefore an ISP? Can you provide a little more detail on how that works?

any whoo back to the subject at hand i have been searching google for "Rampage toolz" and it seems as if it's
an AOL programe of some sort
any way is your friend just trying to protect a home computer ? or a network ? i am asuming it's a home computer
and every thing you need to secure your home computer is availlible free on the net and the chances of your home box
getting hacked is slim to none not unless some skiddie sends you a trojan other than that just tell (s)he to keep there firewalls updated antivirus's etc and not to worry and spend money on a program that is prolly ****

Hacker starts attack against victim.
Victim's tool kicks in and say's, hey I'm under attack by 123.456.789.01 so I'm going to 'reverse' this attack and spoof my IP (yes I said spoof) to be 123.456.789.01
Now all the attack packets are being routed back to the hacker and I am not under attack anymore.
Ask yourself now, what the heck is routing all this traffic....an ISP maybe? An ISP that's not going to be happy?

no matter how it works, it has to go through an ISP somewhere along the line.
ISP's do not responed well to cracker activity.
two mates of mine were attacking each other with netbus just for fun. they both knew it was happening but they mannaged to p1ss off the ISP's (seperate ISP's Xtra and Ihug) and they cancelled their accounts. no questions asked
is it worth the risk?

OK lets think about this for a moment...If this Program or prog if you will, were actually legal and did everything it said it could, don't you think it would be a little more advertised with help files and the whole nine yards? Plus another point, if it was in actuallity a "security program", don't you think Mcaffee or Symantec wouldn't want their hands in that? IF it were legal I mean. It wouldn't be sitting in some low grade prog site waiting to be downloaded. It would be sitting on a more well-known site with a catchy come'on and their copyrights all over it. I'm with Bilo on that.
