LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hundreds of Iranian and other Middle East citizens were in southern California jails on Wednesday after coming forward to comply with a new rule to register with immigration authorities only to wind up handcuffed and behind bars.

Shocked and frustrated Islamic and immigrant groups estimate that more than 500 people have been arrested in Los Angeles, neighboring Orange County and San Diego in the past three days under a new nationwide anti-terrorism program. Some unconfirmed reports put the figure as high as 1,000.

The arrests sparked a demonstration by hundreds of Iranians outside a Los Angeles immigration office. The protesters carried banners saying "What's next? Concentration camps?" and "What happened to liberty and justice?."

A spokesman for the Immigration and Naturalization Service said no numbers of people arrested would be made public. A Justice Department (news - web sites) spokesman could not be reached for comment.

"I think it is shocking what is happening. It is reminiscent of what happened in the past with the internment of Japanese Americans. We are getting a lot of telephone calls from people. We are hearing that people went down wanting to cooperate and then they were detained," said Ramona Ripston, the ACLU's executive director.

JAILS OVERFLOWING

One activist said local jails were so overcrowded that the immigrants could be sent to Arizona, where they could face weeks or months in prisons awaiting hearings before immigration judges or deportation.

"It is a shock. You don't expect this to happen. It is really putting fright and apprehension in the community. People who come from these countries -- this is what they expect from their government. Not from America,..."

Interesting... and very scary! I have to say that I don't agree with what they are doing. Granted, I am a conservative republican and I live in San Diego. I pass street corners with all the migrant workers standing there trying to get work, I see people making mad dashes across the freeway at the border to try to get into the country. I see (per the law) illegal aliens using medical resources that our taxes pay for. I could EASILY sit here and say "Close the border" or "Throw them out." Now, granted, there are times that I resent them getting medical attention while tax paying citizens wait hours in emergeny waiting rooms, but all in all, I can't approve what is now happening.

Why do I see all the negatives but not jump to a conclusion to exile illegal aliens? Because I can't imagine being in their shoes. I've picked up mexican workers before, and guess what... they have a work ethic unlike anything I've seen (way better than my work ethic, for sure!). I can't in good conscience sit up on the hill I'm on and say that noone else belongs here. Hell, I've had a good life and don't really think I've done much to deserve what I have. Am I rich? No, I'm overdrawn actually :) - but I don't have it bad. People have come to expect too much. They take too much for granted. I think we need to put ourselves in check every once in a while.

I'm not sure why I responded to this post, really. I guess it's just that I've always been taught to not let a few rotten apples spoil the whole bunch. Now granted, if we do go to war and aim for the "rotten apples," there are bound to be some good ones damaged. I can accept that. I can't accept the people that say "bomb the whole f'in middle east." I think that people that decide to lock up entire ethnicities/regions need to do some reevaluation of what they have in their life and how they got it. Most of these people are in this country (legally or not), to try and make a living and support their families. How can we as a country bash the ways of other nations, and then in our next breath we lock up those foreigners that listen so us talk about how good our country is and try to come here? It just doesn't compute in my head!

The Western World is not blameless. Corporate greed and arrogant foreign policies have taken their toll on this world. I really don’t believe RC to be a mean, vindictive or stupid person. Quit the contrary. Id be very interested to hear his reasoning behind this. This I believe his part of the country. I’ve heard on the news, but haven’t paid much attention, Arabic people in California protesting our government’s policies. I had assumed they were, for the most part, citizens. This is America…people protest. For who in their right mind would attempt to move into a country and before they are granted citizenship, march in the streets against it? Normally exiles don’t act that way to those granting them shelter.

I’d like to believe this is what’s behind this and all the people jailed were dissidents here illegally. I fear (and I mean this literally) that this is not the case. What makes it even more frightening to me, is that no one that ive spoken to today, knows anything about this. There’s been nothing on the Radio or the tube that I’ve heard. I believe the State of Michigan in the US actually has the highest concentration of Middle eastern ethnicity. So you would think this article would have happened in Michigan not California.

These immigrants missed the deadline to register. I suspect that they will be "scolded" and released rather quickly after they are processed. Its nothing to get excited about. They broke the law and I don't think they will receive any harsh punishments. Probably just a ticket and then they'll be released.

Have non-muslims been jailed? i can find no refferance to this. if you have this info please list its source.

I think the situation is difficult and uncomfortable, but necessary. Dont get me wrong, it is horrible to have to do something like this. In israel, an american news agency (I dont remember which one) did a report on Israeli security at their airport which aired on national tv. They asked the head of security if he thinks it is ok to do racial profiling and also recieve heat about doing this. His response was that if it preventspeople from blowing up planes and killing hundreds of people then it is worth doing it everytime until there is no longer a need to worry. If you pay attention you will see this is a process and is not done without reason. Here is an example. Airplane blows up. Arabic fundamentalist group claims responsibility. There is continued action by this group and the perpatrators are all of arabic descent. Now racial profiling comes in to play because it is the only way to single out the large majority of possibilities. The countries who harbor, allow or support this type of activity are to blame. The overall Arab population are hard working respectable people with values. Until the people in these countries and the governments decide enough is enough this will continue and just get worse. I know first hand. I am an American who served in the Israeli army and I have many Arabic, and Palestinian friends so I am not anti Arab!

Okay, Discrimination is bullshit, plain and simple. The U.S people discriminating against Arab's because of the terrorist attacks, is bullshit. Let me put it this way, When the Oklahoma City Bombing happened, we learnt that it was Timothy McVeigh (and I think someone else, but don't quote me on it) that was responsible for it. Now, Timothy McVeigh was white. He was also classified as a terrorist. So.. Is this country going to start being prejudice against whites? No, because half the god damn country is white. We could be arguing and "fighting" all day, more when many of us are from different cultures. So, if we, a "few" guys chit chating in an interactive website, can reach such a discussion, then imagine the big problem that this is for countries government to deal with. Are we talking about enemies??? Personally i detest racism of any kind, we are all " far away" brothers. Why judging a person for being from another country, race or culture? If you want to judge someone then judge a killer, a raper or a thief (if he doesn't stole to feed his family). So let's just hope this problem is fixed and all get to calm again.

First let me say thanks for this news story. I had not heard anything about this. (I live in California). Why make anyone register with the government based on their race? Isnt that what the Nazi's did? Are we going to make the Muslims and Arabic people wear stars next? I think that this is totally wrong. A small group of extremists (out of the total population of muslims) are responsible for the attacks on NYC and we should not be blaming all Muslims for their actions.

Second: The pentagon was hit in a section that they were redoing. That is why they are not mentioned as much in the media. Also the death count.... 2500 deaths is always something that Bush always states in his addresses to the American people.

well , everybody in the ME says it's a war againest ISLAM, it's not about being arab or not.

and u'll find that true if hear the news daily , everybody is fighting back islam.

that’s not the way we see it bimmer, from my prospective it appears to be a group of fundamentalist extremists, that fighting everybody else. it's beginning to look like islam against the rest of the world. india, africa malaysia...all different ethnic and religious groups in conflict with muslim fundamentalist extremists. what are they telling you, there not wrong its everybody else?

This has to be an example of constructive debate in its highest form.

I've read your posts twice nebulus, and i cannot find one jot of opinion in them, just some racist ramblings.

While I do not agree with the people who expressed a "what's wrong with this" opinion they at least advanced the arguement.

And now down to the point I was going to make.

from what I read in the article the Muslims arrested were attempting to comply with the "registration" rules. do the people who feel that they were rule breakers have any sources to point to to enlighten me.
