Amd Xp1800 Ddr266
I picked up this barebone system but it didnt come with any onboard video. So I put an ATI 32mb Rage 6 video card in the PCI slot. When I boot up the system the monitor doesnt display anything. I changed out the card and tried a different card AGP style but still nothing. Ive tried diffent ram, clearing the Cmos and replacing the motherboard but still nothing. If you have any suggestions on what it might be let me know. My other thought is the video card doesnt support AMD.

If the PC giving off any beep patterns that can be identified in the motherboard manual that says video not found or anything along those lines? My other question would be are you positive the monitor works. I recently purchased a system for my younger sister, got it all together and nothing, thought it was the vid card, checked and it was fine.. turned out the monitor was blown... So yeah I'd check those things

Looks like your problem is with your monitor. Have you checked that possiblilty. Because you've mentioned pretty much everything else in your reply. Another thing to do is to check each component on someone else's system. If even that doesn't work return the computer to the person or store you bought it from.
Cheers,

the monitor works I tried it on 2 monitors they both worked with my old system. No sounds come from the AMD system at all and the system speaker is plugged into the motherboard.

Power problem somewhere??I'd pull out the old multimeter and see what your readings off the power supply are... Especially with everyone you've already done and it's not working.
Do you get a light on your tower when you turn the computer on? Do the fans start spinning?
-
yeah the cpu fan spins and the lights all power up. Its a 400watt power suppy
-
Will it boot using the built in graphics without the new card? If so, then you may need to remove the display adapter in device manager, shut down, install the new card and then boot up...OR you may have to go into CMOS and disable the built in graphics. If you have a manual for the M/B it might serve to clear things up.

I dunno dude...I checked with my roommate (Electronics Engineer) he figures if you've changed everything that you've got an ID 10 T Error :) j/k
His other suggest was totake yourworking comp, and start plugging in peices out of the non-working one until the working one no longer works. THen you'll have located your problem.

sorry but there is no onboard video. I dont even get to display the Cmos till I get the video working.
-
my bad...misread the first post.
1. AGP cards are notoriously stubborn about getting 'seated'....sometimes it takes a little extra pressure to get good contact throughout the slot.
2. Does it POST when you start up?
<edit> AGP??? wtf did I EVEN get that from?? The only other advice I can offer is to try the card in different slots....you might have a conflict somewhere. Beyond that, I'd put my money on a bad card or a bad P/S. I gotta quit answering threads when I'm sleepy...

My sister had the exact same problem yesterday, and while this is not an answer to your problem, she had no screen when the graphic card was installed and the tower was laying on its side on the bench.
Once stood up - on came the monitor, I was wondering if something was making contact with the back of the motherboard, (it is an old box that has been pulled apart a few times) effectively shorting something out. I haven't physically inspected her machine - so I can not confirm this.
Definitely a strange one.

No post when it starts up all that happens is the CPU fan starts up and thats it. nothing else shows up. Monitor works good because it shows the (Monitor working check cable connection) box. Could it be the ATI card doesnt support AMD? I was told that all video cards have the same basic start up protocal. so I am stumped.
I thought the same thing that maybe it was grounding out but when I pulled the motherboard out and ran it from my desk top it still did the same thing. Another thing is this is a new system so it souldnt have shorting out problems yet.
-
If it won't POST it *could* be your RAM....make sure it's well seated.
-
yeah I checked the ram it calls for PC133 low density ram to start off with so I changed out my PC100 ram with a freinds PC133 which he had running in his computer so I sure it was all good. When I placed it in the system I tried it in both slots making sure it was set tightly. sorry if Im frustrating you all about my problem but thats where Im getting to. Going to make a nice boat anker soon.
-
Been there, felt that way too. When I built my current AMD box, I had to use CAS2 RAM to get it going....cheap RAM just wouldn't cut it in my ABIT board. Which brings me to my next question...what brand/model M/B is it?
-
toshiba 128 the other ifintron 256
-
does the box 'boot up' and run for about 10 - 20 seconds and then just shut down?
if thats the problem it is most likely your heatsink or fan stuff, i got a new AMD box and the heatsink wasnt properly attached, so when i took it back they testeed everything and then realised they had done somthing wrong with the heatsink, but im not quite sure what it was they did to it though :(
-
No it stays running. I wish I could figure this out because it starting to get on my nerves. Ive never had this much trouble with a computer before. Ive sent the motherboard back once already with this same problem, and I got a new one back but still haveing the same problem. Im going to buy a new video card AGP style and see if that will fix it. If it doesnt then Ill have to call them and find out how they exactly test these systems. Like what card they use and what ram they are running in there systems.
-
Just to clarify my earlier question, what brand and model of motherboard do you have? Correct me if I'm wrong but I think your last reply was the types of RAM you've tried.

hey i had a prom with an amd system b4. turns out the mobo i had didn't like my cpu (a new mobo which was the exact same model got along fine so problem solved). to this day i have no idea why that specific motherboard didn't work with my cpu. anyway what i'm tring to say is to follow the advice of your friend and find out which parts work and which may be "conflicting" with each other.
also with agp cards ... i have know some to require ram with memery on both sides of the stick so the cpu can pull from one end and the graphics can pull from the other, sorta like tug-o-war, although this might not be the case trying different parts (i.e grap some diff ram n c what happens, diff cpu, pci graphics...) is the best way to figure out what's going on.
hope all goes well, keep us posted!
