Why not search the archives? This topic's been covered tons of times. Everyone has their own preferences and it's all been covered in depth in previous posts.

jsut to let you know blackice2 is my fav , but ... did you know that the os windows xp has a firewall with it ? why not start there or at least get rid of the windows firewall, if youre going to go with a new fire wall remove windows xps firewall, it will mess with the new fire wall, why i still dont know more then likely jsut one of those gay windows things

Hope this will help: http://www.agnitum.com/php_scripts/compare.php
My fav is Agnitum, it's lite, easy to use and powerfull......
- Noia
PS: Agnitum Is freeware, if you select the free version...it still beats all the other ones :)
Also, BlackICE failed the LeakTest.....so I wouldn't trust it....

I know XP has it's own firewall. I'm just looking for the best freeware has to offer. Something better than XP's firewall.
Try Zone Alarm (www.zonelabs.com) It is Free
Personally .... I prefer a hardware solution like Linksys.
I think zone alarm is the best and it is free.
Zone alarm is OK, for a free one i guess, but if you want protection, get NIS, Norton Internet Security. It is much more configurable, and still has a very easy to use GUI. IMO this is the next best thing to having your network behind a linux box runnin devil linux. It does however cost money to buy, and it's been well worth the investment to me.
Has any one here ever compared Agnitum Outpost to ZoneAlarm? I'll tell you the outcome....ZA get's thrashed....I know it has a nice GUI, but it's not nearly as comprihensive as Agnitum. Outpost also Has Ad blocking, Special Rules setup, MD5 Comparison and Plug-in Option, some thing that no other Firewall has (As far as I know)
Well, I Higly recomend it...and It's also FREE!

Buy a PIX. I'll even help you configure it.
Oh wait, it seems like you want a software firewall. That's ok, use IP Tables. They're awesome.
Oh wait......youre using Windows
:D
Noia's link is great (I've seen that table, it's excellent). Here are a couple others to check out.
Note: These tables don't contain all existing firewalls

I'll keep checking around, see If I can find anymore links. If I do, I'll post them in this reply.
ZA sucks and it's been said here soooooo many times before. Outpost, sygate, and tiny firewall are the best. BUt don't take my word for it go out and test them yourselves.
www.dslreports.com has scanner tests.
www.grc.com has a weak ass scanner test.
etc. etc. etc.
Just do a little homewaork and don't listen to the company propaganda. Cause the most used isn't always the best made product, ya know?
-my 2 cents
i went with a hardware solution from D-Link. unfortunately it broke a little while ago. it lasted just over a year. what a piece of junk.
Can you say advertisments? I knew you could. They might as well have a little popup to link directly to ZA and BlackIce's website... Sheesh..Quote:
Ouch, I didn't see that... Well... I guess they have to pay for hosting somehow =]
I personally use Norton FireWall 2003 and Norton AntiVirus Corporate edition. Next to that I use Visual Route, EmailRoutePro, and LANGuard Security Scanner..... but thats for other reasons.
hmm
i have winxp pro and before i changed my internet arrangement i had tiny personal firewall on it, im not sure if you can still get the free one but i have their free one
if youre new to firewalling which it sounds like you are, this one is very easy to pick up and use straight away, id never used a firewall before and this one was (and still is) extremely simple and also efective to use, it can block connections from speciic ports, programs and connection types such as TCP, UDP and ICMP packets
www.tinysoftware.com doesnt have the free version that i use anymore, but a search for it on a p2p app might bring up some hope for you
the filename you'll be looking for will be pf2.exe, i think its version 2.11
No one firewall is best for everyone. If one were developed all the other companies would have to file for chapter 11. Look at the various features and find the one you like using and use it. I like ZoneAlarm Pro 3.5. I paid for it and it works well. It blocks adds, Blocks cookies, has email protection, and seems to block all unwanted messages. But there are two more packages you should have 1) a virus scanner 2) a package to find and destroy spyware, trojans, Rats etc. I use Norton Anti Virus at home and Macafee at work. I use PestPatrol at home and work. The three packages seem to work well together. Each is a specialist in its area and helps you maintain your environment.
I like BlackIce, Sygate, and my DLink Router as firewall
the XP firewall is trash though....
