Yes. Although I thought ECHELON was replaced with something bigger.

MsMittens,
Are you referring to the FBI's CARNIVORE system? ASk your ISP if they are participating in this program. The answer should amuse you ;)

http://www.howstuffworks.com/carnivore.htm
Well, I wouldn't put it past my ISP but I don't see why they would participate since Carnivore and Echelon are NSA projects, specifically the realm of the US Gov't. Since I live in Canada, they'd have no reason to agree to participate unless the RCMP or CSIS are forcing them to.
I know of several large US based ISPs who are active participants but they are very low key about making that info known.
Well, I guess that means that -- at the very least -- when my packets leave Canada and head down to AO, the boys in NSA are reading them. Welp. Only one thing to do..
Hey, NSA! How goes it?? :D <-- big toothy grin.
Nice of the NSA to actually care enough about us to actually spy for no reason at all while we're all sitting on our asses.
Maybe they're trying to promote social interaction? I doubt it :P But it's a good thought!
Does that have to do something with that chain letter email asking you to incluse about 100 words that were considered "keywords" to make it hard for the fbi to track you?
I thought it was a bunch of BS, after all there is over a billion email addresses... The computing power along would be very expensive to maintain especially if it is run on windows boxes...
Doesn't the Patriot act have the nsa save EVERYTHING for further reference or evidence or whatever. I thought i heard that awhile back to the point where you use your credit card at the gas pump they save that to file-anybody here this before???
Archaeologists will still be reading the logs 10,000 years
from now, trying to discover if there was intelligent
life in our era.
King of CaveMen was right. Echelon, Magic Lantern, CyberKnight, Carnivore, some even say HARRP is included (which I doubt). E-mails are "apparently" scanned for certain key words such as "bomb" or "explosive". There was an e-mail circulated long ago which asked people to pass on to all the people in their contact list a phrase which contained a variety of key words which these snooping programs would key in on. It was hoped that if enough people did this, something like Echelon would "overload". I think these gov't tools would be put to better use if they could clear my Hotmail of Suzy and Sarah and their pet goat getting me out of debt and increasing my penis size while I watch Juicy Lucy on my free plasma tv.
Now I can't confirm this, but from what I have heard Echelon is not even aimed at the american people, its used to intercept international data. The *possible* reason for this is rather interesting; its believe that we (the US) spy on other countries for their government, and the return the favor by keeping tabs on the American public for the US Gov. I know it sounds a bit paranoid, but if it was discovered, which would be more alarming to the people, than a forieng gov was monitoring us, or that our own government didnt trust the people and felt a need to monitor them heavily? It would seem like a logical method of covering the tracks made by a monitoring system to me.
I read the exact same thing ,i believe the intention was to get around restrictions on spying on your own citizens although ,the patriot act and part2 of the patriot act seem to make it redundant for you all in the USA
I think thats a great though and i was looking around on the internet and found a little information on the internet right here ------> http://www.privacy.org/archives/001000.html
Syini666 that makes a lot of sense when you put it in perspective like that.
I never really thought about it that way, but it does make a lot of sense.
You obviously have not read anything in any of the links provided by others in this thread. admit it.Quote:

When you say "WE" you should use it in the LOOSEST sence possible, otherwise you are associating yourself with "them". On some level in the government heirarchy I would not doubt neither their ability nor the fact that there is more than ample motivation for them to do this sort of thing. Especially with Bush and his Junta, the shadow government. But as far as getting them to admit it, HA! All you will get are lies, coverups, propaganda and more commercials. It would NEVER make the news (the way celebrities new hair styles would do), because the government control all forms of broadcasting.Quote:

On the higher levels of the government, it is more their scene to target the young minds of overseas nations with propaganda, to structure their beliefs in an attempt to control their minds.
jxrry59 That information is actually saved by the credit card company and cross referenced through the credit bureau. The NSA is a bit different.
