True Patriotism

A picture speaks a thousand words.
Attached is a picture you have to see. We define patriotism, render
respect and honor and pay tribute in many ways. Some people have a
different level of devotion and a different level of pride, some just
show it differently. Regardless, it is what's in your heart that matters.
As you open this picture below think of the millions of Americans who
have come before us, served their country and then come home only to be
forgotten, left behind and in some cases, even discarded by the same
people they fought to defend. Remember those who valiantly served
and were cursed when they came home. The gentleman in this attachment is
unknown to me. I don't know who he is, where he has been or even if
he ever served a day in the military. BUT, by his action I would be
willing to bet that he served his country, proudly and with honor, and in his
heart is still serving by doing all that he can to show his love for
his country.

That man deserve great respect for several reasons:
1 he is an elder and as one they should always be repected at least for that for they have lived thing that we cannot even iomagine and we can learn from their experince...
2 i believe that man of tha age has probably served his country and he knows what he did for the flag and that he will respect it till his last day...
3 shame on the people around him ...


there are discussion going on around (in the states, and even in france ...) about the right to burn a flag. several issues are raised in that act but a lot of the protesters don't actually know what it means for so many others, i think that there shoudl be some type of civil education mandatory for everyone to know what a flag really represent and mean.

I had to cover Freedom of Speech in a 6th grade social studies class I was teaching today. What it comes down to is respect. Even if a symbol or flag means nothing to me, it could mean something to someone else. By burning it I show not only my disrespect for the symbol but for those that respect it. By showing disrespect for others, I show disrespect for myself.

Yes, I agree most people know very little about flag etiquette. I have an embarassing example from my past. I used to be president of the Brazos Valley Civil War Round Table (about 7 years ago). This group is made up of almost no women, mostly older vets, professors, and judges. These are people who have a major and vested interest in our country. Anyway, the country club where we held our meetings had staff that would "set up" the room for us. On this particular night the staff had put the Texas flag and the United States flag on the wrong sides of the room. I was horrified that I didn't even notice! One of the elderly members had to inform me of this gross "oversite". Needless to say that never happened again. But to think that this matter seems trivial to people is beyond my comprehension....it is after all a symbol....not just a bunch colored fabric.

nabylbt, while I agree that educating kids/people about the flag and its etiquette is a good idea....I have to take issue with "mandatory". Mandatory is a slippery slope.

Thing is, I'm not too keen on the fact that Patriotism has recently become a fad amongst the populous of the U.S. After 9/11, you saw everyone and their brother waving the American flag, being cordial on the roadways, etc. Now? Things have pretty much reverted to they way they were. I think it was a wake up call to a good number of people, myself included, about what folks in the U.S. have, though for some, Patriotism has become, unfortunately, passe.

I was asked how come I wasn't dressed for the day. My reply: I thought it was silly. She then came back with "You should show your patriotism." I then said
"I'll be happy to bring my discharge papers from in the Army in if I am required to prove my patriotism. By the way, may I see yours?" That shut her up.

You have my undying praise for doing what you did in the Army. It takes a lot of guts and determination to go out and put your life on the line like that so that others may be spared. As far as that lady, I guarentee you she couldn't be thinking less about where to hang her Stars and Stripes. As a matter of fact, I'd be willing to bet it's getting dusty and musty up in her attic.

I guess where my true feelings lie is that I'm a little disgusted and dissapointed that it took such a revolting act of cowardice to get people to feel patriotic.

Anyhow, yeah it's a shame that it takes such a horrendous loss of human life for people to get behind their country. It was a wake-up call for me, personally. I realized how much I've been allowed to do, simply because I was born here and lived here all my life. Thanks to the wonderful upbringing I had, I'm allowed to possibly work in a field with things I love for the rest of my working days. Doesn't take a tragedy to realize I've got it pretty good.

Hey Hey,

That picture says a lot to me, that man is a great man. Americans have great respect for their country, they seem to (for the most part) pull together and show their colours when the need be.

I've been raised to show repect to the Canadian flag, but I don't think I've ever shown it that much repect, beyond removing my hat and facing it at Hockey Games, and standing when the Royal Canadian Legion Members march in parades.

I wish that that aspect of the United States would rub off on Canada. I wish we were truly more patriotic. Hell we've got a Province that wants to seperate and no longer be part of Canada. That's a huge lack of patriotism.

Anyways kudos to American for being one of the most patriotic countries in the world.


As a side note, i'm a freedom of speech advocate, but i think flag burners should recieve the death penalty just because it's disrepectful not only to the country but to all it's citizens.

I am very glad to see that post from you HTRegz, its been dishearting to hear some of the comments made by you considering that a great friend of mine lives in London Ontario. We understand one another and have almost all the same views(Rob and I). I would fight and die for him and your country anyday as an American. I am from Minnesota so I have been to Canada a few times and I love it! Its like a friendlier version of America :p LOL(except the French-Canadians,they arent too pleasant :( )

That man reminds me of half of my family. My grandfather fought in both WWII and the Korean war and everytime there is some form of a march for his brothers lost in arms or parades or whatever, he is there carrying one of the flags. The only reason this is strange is because my grandfather can hardly see, he has horrible diabetics, legs hardly even work. But he will endure the pain for his lost friends and countryman. I was brought up so that every memorial day I would walk through the cemetary with him and put flags on the graves of dead soliders, So i was brought up to respect the american flag and I hate to see people talking (during the anthem) or not standing up in the presence of our flag, especially when the men that put their lives on the line for this country are carrying it. I just wish more ppl would understand and show a little respect. My deepest respect goes to that man, past, and present soldiers.

I've been to many hockey games and sung "O Canada" when the opposing team is Canadian. I don't understand why the United States national anthem was booed at the Islanders game last evening.

I remember all the flack the US Marines got when they accidentally flew the colors of Canada upside down at the world series a few years ago.

Accident or not, if we (Canada) did that to the American Flag, you'd igve us just as much "flack" about it, probably more.


As for the booing at sporting events.... that's been going on for years now, as long as I've been watching sporting events anyways... It just seems every so often the opposing country will do it.... Why? because like KorpDeath said, people are ignorant....
