Just a note here - this program isn't freeware, it's an evaluation copy for testing purposes that will expire in April of this year.. The following is from their License Agreement:
But it does look like a pretty neat tool...Quote:
This software is not free. It is offered for evaluation and testing purposes
only. You are entitled to use this product during the BETA testing period,
until that period expires, which is currently April 30th, 2003. At that time,
you will need to go to the Port Monster website [http://www.portmonster.com],
where you can obtain and register the full version of Port Monster if it has
been released at that time, or you may obtain a new BETA version of the software
for continued testing. Any use of this software after the BETA testing period
has ended, or any attempts to modify this software thereby allowing it to

This is just an update:
Port Monster 2.0 - Standard Edition now free!
Description:
Port Monster is designed to not only manually control connections to your computer through a powerful firewall, but Port Monster will also detect and proactively respond to unwanted connection attempts and port scans against your computer in real time.
Port Monster is not just for home computers, it is made for any computer than runs Windows. Whether your computer is a home computer, workstation, or server, it doesn't matter. Block port scans, stop intruders, and protect services running on your computers and servers immediately.
Running a service like ftp or email, and want to keep strangers out? Port Monster will allow you to specify those hosts that can connect, and will let you block the rest. This goes for any service running on your computer or server.
The best way to protect your network is with layers of security, so there is more than one hurdle for an attacker or a virus to go through. Running Port Monster on your workstations and servers adds that additional layer of security. If someone gets past the main firewall for example, and starts probing ports on your machines, not only will those machines be protected, but you will see that probing activity and know that there is a problem!
Stop worrying about intruders and get back to using your computer for what you want.

i am going to check this out looks promising
Downloaded / Installed / Tried / Tested / Broke / Uninstalled / Deleted Setup Files
I have had it running on this box for 3 weeks now with no problems (XPpro SP1..all patches)
One minor bitch, when it kicks off you get a splash screen as it struts its stuff......you have to remember to click "hide" and not the little X, or you switch it off!
It is a beta...I shall report that to them
Cheers
I didn't mean broke as in not working nihil.

Figure out a way to bypass it?
If so, you should report it to the developer....
At any rate, I'm downloading it now, hopefully I'll have some time to mess around with it and determine it's usefulness (if any)...
I downloaded this and have been running it for a couple of days
But, when I went to Symantic Security Site: http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/d...d=ie&venid=sym
I failed 3 out of 5 catagories. With Port Monster off, I passed all 5.
I have consequently removed it, but it did have some interesting features. I am going to reinstall it and check some other security check sites and see how it does with them.
[/EDIT] After farther checking:
--- Audit my PC http://www.auditmypc.com/freescan/selscan.asp?S=2047 Passed
--- Sygate Online Services http://scan.sygate.com/ FAILED
Without Port Monster on it completely Passed but wit PM on....this:
Ideally your status should be "Blocked". This indicates that your ports are not only
closed, but they are completely hidden (stealthed) to attackers.
