Folding@Home

I felt a little bit bored and started to create a team site for all folders here at AO ,and hopefully can we use it until I can find a better place for it.

I talked to Negative earlier and he thought it would be a good idea to create some folding tutorials and I started with a place to have them on (imho is AO not suitable since this is a security related site).

Team AO site features:

Forum, Tutorials (in time we create), simple layout, team stats (thanks to Tim), links, downloads.

Wanted: administrators, moderators, designers, ideas critics, and help to find a good public site to move everything to (free).

Well i became a part of the AO F@H and well it was working all night and until now it says it has caused and error in the file PMXGR.dll im pretty sure. And i wanted to know if there was any way to fix this?

It does not ring a bell..

A few questions:

• What OS do you use ?
• What version of F@H do you use ?
• Do you use console or graphical f@h client ?
• If graphical client (scrnsaver), what kind of graphic card do you have ?
• Does it start now or is it dead ?
• Aprox how long time was you able to run before it stopped ?

I searched some sources and did not find anything about PMXGR.dll. I will see if I can find anything. One place were you can post your questions is http://forum.folding-community.org . If you still have problems please attach the f@h log file, (direct after a crash, do not try to restart f@h before you have backed the logfile).

I use Windows ME and for some reason it keeps saying that errror message. I tried to download it agian, but the same error message came up.

Ugh....I gave up on Folding@home for a short while.....after doing 148/200 it died and lost all it's work.
Also...my other machine is A) Sounds like a hoover and B) It get's a Core dump BEFORE it finished installing XP....go figure...

Oh well..I will re-join, but not right now :( too much work ATM.

Well I lost one set I was doing (was about at 196/200). Freakin' harddrive did ye ol' click of death! UGH! At least this one is still going (almost done), the ol' pentium is still chugging and now I've restarted on XP.. :P

I have noticed a few WU's they have had problems with (client crashed when they was assigned these WU's). They have now removed them and it seems like everything works quite well, except that they have had some problems after the powerdown last friday (stats not showing up, servers not give WU's etc). Hopefully will they solve their problems and be back up and running to 100% soon again.

3/17/2003 PLANNED SHUTDOWN, FRIDAY MARCH 21
The power in our building is being rerouted and we are being forced to have a planned shutdown. We will likely take all of the F@H servers off line Friday, March 21 around 5pm PST and then bring them up around 1pm Saturday, March 22. The exact times may change slightly. We had a previous planned shutdown like this which went relatively smoothly and we hope that this will go smoothly as well.

Yea I re-downloaded it and it seems to be working fine thanks again.

Welcome (again) kilerboots :).

We do still need new folders in our struggle to make Team AntiOnline one of the top 100 teams in the world.

I completed a folding in 40 days (approx.). That's slow, but well, my computer is used a lot, and hence, less folding work. Anyway, i was surprised, i'm not listed on the team page.
Duh, yes, i have the right team number.

If this Folding@Home profile belongs to you: Invader, is there a possibility that you either has missed something in the configuration. The profile tells that Invader do not belong to any team.

Or, maybe you have signed up lately? If it's like that will you show up on the team stats page when you have done your first WU for Team AO.

Old WU's will not count when you change team or joins a new team. Only work from that date you joined. This means that you can have several team's listed in your profile, I have for example two teams listed under my profile.

Hope this will help you solve the Team problem.

It's sometimes a delay between the team stat's page and the user page. Check your user page and see if you got credit for the WU and then compare with the Team page. I have never seen a delay longer then a few hours though.

My user page matches the amounts I have on the team page. Hrmm... I'll check when I'm back at work on Tuesday.

I will remember that they do run the total stat's every 5th or 6th hour (creates these lists: no1 and no2) most stat's will show up after the run if not sooner. They had earlier some major problems with their stat's pages but that should be fixed by now since they have rewritten the code of Team & User stat's (maybe more), the good thing is that they do not loose any stat's and the credit for the WU's will be there sooner or later :).

Well I have been using F@H okey,
So it was running like the first time but then it seems when it gets about 40/200 its causes the error.

But this only happens if i want to look at it it runs still when i dont double click on this.

Could someone help explain?

It still sounds like you are using the fancy client version of F@H (screensaver), If it's the fancy version then the problem may more likely be related to the graphics part (which draws the proteins on the screen) rather then the folding function. im sorry that I can't help you more, if the problem continues please try the no-noncense-f@h client. You can find a tutorial here and downloads here.

i have a few spare machines at home, and F@H interests me, seeing as they just sit around and philosophize all day long when i'm not there. 1) should i get involved with F@H if i have a spare piii 500 box. 2) any <known> security risks 3) best OS to use for F@H

Best OS for F@H.. IMHO Linux.. their linux client has a very small memory footprint (on my box)

Security wize it's ok.. the client connects to F@H when starting (or restarting) and when done..
the web traffic is minimal..

The Folding@Home Team site (Team AO) will be taken off-line the 1st of may 2003. Explanation can be found here, for a limited time ;).

There has been a few discussions about to move the site to public servers and that I should continue as site administrator. Unfortunately is my time limited (even for a site as easy to administer as Team AO is today) and I have to discontinue my work.

If someone is interested to take over the site please PM me or send a email to [email protected].

I think this is cool... Having thousands of people help on a project like this :D I downloaded the program, and am running it on my moms puter, and as soon as mine gets back from repairs, ill run it on mine... Mine is on all day, and pretty much all night... The only time i shut mine off is if it starts to slow down, and heat up... :D

Has anyone set up a site for Team AO yet? If not then would teamao.krynet.com be of any use, because I can apply some of the space/bandwidth from my reseller account to that?

I don't think anyone else is still folding for team A.O

I think the top 4, including myself still fold. I don't know what is still folding at my offices...but there are some random machines out there of mine still folding.

I still do also, but not on the AO team ever since AO got bought by Jupiter. Actually, I did have 1 machine that was still doing AO stuff and din't realize it until recently, but that one has been switched also now.

I had a few random machines folding for me a while back. I guess they've all stopped now. Well, basically after Jupiter came in there was some discussion as to weither or not they would support to our TeamAO F@H project to make the Top 100 by the end of this year, but if I remember right they said no.

If you search some of my older posts you might come across some threads on our working towards the Top 100. One of them was a graph on where we were compared to the top 100 teams. The graph became a pain the maintain so I quit it. I think many people quit folding, switched, or slowed down since we're now in 195th, while at one time we were somewhere around 160-170.

As to me folding again... I don't have the resources to help very much anymore. Since my moving around Japan and the USA, I'm not planning on doing much folding any time soon. At least not for Team AO...

As it nears the year 2004, I thought I would post once more in this thread to promote Folding@Home, and quite possibly Distributed Computing, as a whole. After these first two links to two of the projects that AntiOnline was at one point involved in, I will link you to an awesome flash video promoting Folding@Home. Now that I have your attention, read below.

DC Projects that AntiOnline was at one point in time or another involved in:
Stanford's AntiOnline Folding@Home Stats (These guys run the Folding@Home project as a whole)
AntiOnline's Team for Seti@Home Stats

You might wonder what these projects are about. First of all, here is that flash video for Folding@Home I promised. It was made by a member of team #93, Team Short-Media. Basically, Folding@Home is a distributed computing project that was designed to study why/how protiens fold, and at times fold wrong. Bringing you back into what you learned in Biology, all of the cells in your body are made up of protiens. When they don't work right, problems happen, such as many various diseases, including mad-cow and Altzheimer's. Why did stanford choose distributed computing over a giant super computer you may ask? Because using the idle power of your own home PC adds up, and can be more powerful than even the fastest Earth Simulator. There are also cryptography challenges to decrypt stuff and some people use distributed computing to set records or crack some encryption or another. Instead of playing with huge prime numbers, Folding@Home produces results that benefit humanity as a whole. Since Stanford is a college, what they discover can't be made propietary; if they discover a cure to a major disease they won't be the M$ of medicine, since everyone benefits much like OpenSource.

As for [email protected], I'm biased towards Folding@Home myself. I'm not quite as interested in having my computer analyze radio signals from outerspace to look for extraterrestrial life/intellegence. Sadly, our team seems to have pretty much stopped Seti@Home somewhere in November of 2003...


As for what has happened to our team over the past 6 or so months...
1) We wanted to be in the top 100 teams by the end of 2003... Around here this becomes a sticky.
2) Michael set up an AO F@H website (which is down now)
3) We recruited, and got into 160~ish place
4) AntiOnline was bought by Jupiter Media
5) Some members quit Folding
6) Michael decided his personal managing of a web server wasn't warrented; website dissapears
7) More members quit and slowed production, and I retired 4 or 5 Intel Celeron 2.2GHz? machines from Folding...
Today, the last day of 2003) We are in 199th place (excluding Google & Anynomous)


Although Jupiter Media isn't really supporting the AntiOnline folding@home team, we still have one. It can be considered 'unofficial' or whatever you like, just know that we have one. There are also other teams that compete in Folding@Home. I myself have moved on and continue to fold, since I want my Idle CPU time to be spent doing something useful. Hopefully that flash video won you over, and you put your computer to use folding.

I'm folding at the moment, but I've never really got into joining teams or anything like that. I used to fold purely using the console version, as and when I remembered to start it up. Problem was that it always seemed to take longer to gain results with F@H than any other distributed computing project (and I've tried a lot of them).

Like a lot of things, people lose interest in projects/teams, sites close down and no-one can be bothered any more. I offered to host the site if someone else wanted to work on it (I wouldn't mind the odd bit of admin, but I've got enough sites to manage at the moment) when Micael decided to drop the site, but I didn't really get any takers. :(

I was recently asked about the security risks that may be posed by using Folding@home. I read about the digital signing and restricted download servers, but I could not find any information on how the program transfers data. Such as what protocol does the program use? I also could not find any information on known vulnerabilities with the software. Does anyone know of any? Offhand I would think of an attacker finding a way to phish users or spoof the download server and then attempt to exploit a buffer overflow using the processes or services that Folding@home uses to transfer data. Any comments community?

Folding-community.org ( http://forum.folding-community.org/homepage.php ) forums would be a good place to start figuring this information out. I did some quick searches, and the moderators appear to be very willing to help people understand how F@H works.

Basically, F@H gets data from stanford servers like a web browser, using ports 80 and 8080. I would assume that HTTP is used. It only connects when it completes a work packet/protien/etc and uploads the results of the simulation to the servers and gets a new work packet. The F@H client does not open any ports on your computer to listen, it only connects to stanford's servers for workpacket stuff.

I don't know of any vulnerabilities in F@H. From what I understand of it, it uploads simulation results to stanford. It then downloads a new simulation. The stanford servers pick the best simulation for the speed of the computer (the F@H client reports benchmark/CPU speeds) so the work packet finishes simulations in time. The work packet is basically a text file, with a LOT of numbers that have to do with positions and temperatures of different atoms that make up protiens. It then probably verifies the files, and if something is wrong, it would probably stop. You can ask the above posted community about it, along with searching for posts related to "Security" on their forums.



Interesting Note: AntiOnline is in position 404. It correctly describes what happened to the webpage we had, and participation.

Another Note: I don't fold much anymore. My power-hungry computer is now being turned off...
