hey im trying set up a home network to share my cable internet access. Both comps have win2k and redhat 7.3. I cant get it to work though. I plugged the cable modem into a switch, then plugged the computers into the switch. But i dont have net access on either computers.
can anyone help.
I'm pretty sure that you won't be able to do it that way... you will need a router.
If you want, you can network both PCs and use one of the Win2k boxes as your gateway using Internet Connection Sharing.
Here is a good walkthrough. They are very detailed and cover practically every situation for home networking.
First make sure the cable modem in plugged into the wan side. Depending on what kind of switch it is you may have to configure it to issue ip addresses. Also make sure your clients are configured to use dhcp instead of a static routing table.
it'd be best to check with your ISP to see how many IP addresses are assigned to you. if you only get one, then you'll need a router with NAT on it. if you get more than that (one of the ISPs in my area assigns 5), then you can just put one of those on your computers.
if you only get the one IP address, then you'll need the router, and i'll give you a general idea of how you'll configure it, because that's what i'm doing :p
get the router and its confguration disc. for the config process of mine (Linksys 4-port router), i had to directly connect my computer to my ISP's box to test for connectivity. after the configuration gets past that, it'll ask you to connect the ISP box to the router (mine was by straight UTP cable, not by crossover, as i had initially assumed) in the WAN port. then another straight UTP cable in to the back of the computer. make sure the computer has DHCP enabled until you have everything else set up. finish the install process, then check if you can connect to any websites or whatever. if you can't, poke around in your router's firmware, and i assume for most of them, it's just by typing its IP address in your address bar in IE or whatever. mine's 192.168.1.1, so just do a quick ipconfig in the command prompt to make sure, and your default gateway is your router.
after you've done all that, and you know what address range your router is giving you, you can set static internal IP addresses (192.168.x.x or 172.16.x.x or whatever the router's network address is) just for management purposes. when you set the static IP addresses, you'll need to set static DNS addresses, which either your ISP can provide you with, or your router's firmware will show.

wan side? Do you mean the uplink port? I have a d-link DSS-8+ switch.
I dont have a router. if i only have 1 ip can i make a proxy/gateway which would be connected to both the cable modem and switch by using 2 network cards to share internet?

I think you will find the DSS-8+ is a switch, what you need to share a single DSL connection is a router. Its an easy mastake to make, hell ive made it. also you need to go HERE for advice on your product, as thay are recalling some units due to power problems. if that is the case and yours is one of the recalls refund it and get a 4 potr router.

Ok the way you may want to consider doin this is a multi NIC machine. Put two nicks in one of the computers you are using. Enable ip routing. Plug your cable internet into NIC one. Then set up NIC two statically, as something in the class C network range. 192.168.1.1 would be fine. After that plug your cat 5 into NIC two and into the uplink port of your switch. After that plug your other computers into the switch ... but not into the port right next to the uplink port. Set up the other computers to use 192.168.1.1 as a default gateway. If ip routing is enabled all should be well. I did this before I got a router.

on routers there is a WAN port, along with an uplink one. the uplink port is for connecting multiple routers/hubs/switches/etc... together. as EaseZE (and you) had said, you could have two NICs in your computer, which i should have thought of earlier... configuration might be harder, though, and hardware routers tend to be plain and simply better than software routers. anyway, if you decide to go down the path of dual NICs, then you would plug it in to the uplink port, as the computer would be simulating a router, and that's what your switch would see it as.Quote:

well i suggest you should just connect your windows box to the internet and then use it as a gateway for the second box.
I have a small connection between two computers at my home. I have only one computer but use a Nat Router which acts as the gateway for the computers. What everybody else is saying is right, you will need a router or at least use the internet connection sharing on Windows.
If you use a router you'll have to plug your modem cable into the WAN port on your computer then plug the other computers into the other ports. Then use one of the computers to setup the router for your cable.
Even if you only have one IP address it wouldn't matter with the router since that would be acting as the gateway.
you can also setup a home network using a hub instead of a switch or router.
the difference is a hub is the cheapest, but least secure,it reads incoming data and broadcasts it to every computer on the network. a router reads destination ofincoming traffic and routes it to the computer that requested the data, and also has a firewall builtin.
A switch is the most expensive of the three and unneccasary in that their are built for large corporate networks, it's like having your newspaper engraved an a silver platter.
you also did not say if you are using premade or handclamped wires : those RJ-45 connectors can be a bitch to handle. did you test your cables with a cable tester?

Just to correct a few things in there..
Routers are the most expensive.
Hubs don't read data, they simply repeat what they hear on every other port.
Switches work based on MAC addresses and will cut down on Collisions (when compared to a hub)
Routers work with IP Addresses and are the only device (other than using a computer as a gateway) you can use in your home if you only have 1 IP Address to play with.

You can use both a hub and a switch as a connection to the net, but nither will work as required. The reason a router will work is its ability to clone or supply a MAC address, if you use a switch or a hub the connection will only work on the computor which has the correct mac address assinged to it. The introduction of a second computor to the hub/switch will make no differance, as the ISP will no connect to an unknown MAC address. I know my ISP allows me to switch MAC address through selfcare, but unless i pay for another IP address, I can only use a single MAC address at one time. if you have a way round this please tell me this could save me money.

oddball, i don't know what you mean when you say your ISP only lets you have one MAC address connected to its service at a time. do you mean to say that only the first NIC that's ever touched that connected can use it unless you go and change the one you want to use? that sounds a little restrictive. and how would they be able to do that, anyway? use ARP to find the MAC address, then somehow only allow it to transmit data to that address? i don't know just how feasible that is....
either way, mine is evidently not like that, as my NIC and router (obviously) have different MAC addresses, and i can use either to connect directly to my ISP box. i believe i have tried it with other computers in the past, too, but what you say is odd.
I did not mean to cause confusion but i have d-link catologe here that show switches at over $400.00 US. I may have misunderstood the type of switch he was talking about but we call a large box that connects up to 25 computers a switch: and a small one a router or hub. I am sorry to have caused a problem.

You are looking at two different things....
Home users can buy 4 - 8 port hubs/switches/routers....
I suppose you could buy a larger hub or switch, or a real router for your home.. but they are different.
The names get confusing at times. Those switches are rather expensive when you get into real switches.. 24 port and such.... by D-Link, Nortel/Bay Networks, Cisco (Catalyst 1900 series for example)..... The average switch for a home user is made by 3com, D-Link, StarTech.. etc, they are 4 - 8 ports and not as extensive as the larger switches.
Then you have routers with interfaces for ethernet, token ring, fddi, etc. These are what an ISP or large corporation would use... Like the Cisco 2500 series... Then there are routers for home users.. same principal, smaller/cheaper design... you have a wan or uplink ethernet port and then you have several other ports for your devices to connect to.
I realize this isn't the greatest breakdown, but it hope it clarifies things for you slightly.
Depends on what kind of router you're talking about. An old P-90 can be had for about $25-50 these days, and a good iptables script can turn it into a router easily. If you're talking about a Cisco, however.... :eek:Quote:

HTRegz is correct. Just to clear up any confusion, all 3 of these things are completely different beasts, and the distinction is not related to how many boxes they connect. Using a hub, when node1 sends information to node2, the hub broadcasts that information to *all* the nodes connected to that hub, so nodes 3, 4, 5, and 6 will receive the same information as node2. They simply ignore it because it isn't intended for them. This creates a lot of unnecessary traffic and packet "collisions" that can slow down the performance of the whole network. This is also how packet sniffers work. If node1 sends a private message to node2, node3 can be put into what's called promiscuous mode and told *not* to ignore the traffic meant for node2 and thereby intercept the communication. :lildevil:Quote:

A switch only transmits the information to the node that it was intended for and doesn't broadcast the traffic all over the network. This reduces chatter and speeds up network performance, as well as reducing the chance that someone might be listening with a packet sniffer somewhere on the subnet.
Hubs and switches connect computers on a single network or subnet, whereas routers connect different networks or subnets together (i.e., connecting a private LAN to the Internet or communicating between 2 subnets).
So for pinkpanther's problem, you need either a hub or a switch to connect all the machines on the home network together, and then you need a router to connect the whole thing to the Internet.

pinkpanther: Windoz will do what you want since Win98SE. Linux will do it since, ...., since Linux. Mees thinks you are being a bit too hasty, trying to take shortcuts and get A.O. to set things up for you; most will be glade to help, but you need to read the docs, tuts, and man pages.

as far as the nic in Linux, If you have the same type nic for eth0 and eth1 you MUST load the driver as a module, not compiled into the kernel, or Linux won't recognize the second nic.
Also, I have found RH less then intuitive about setting up routing tables correctly. See above link for explanation of what they should look like.

Each NIC I have installed has its own unique MAC address, blueyonder requires that MAC address before I can connect "we are talking about a DSL here", when I first connected a engineer came round and installed some cheap £12.00 NIC card, blueyonder charged me £75.00 for it, :mad: but you live and learn. The following day I replaced the card with a netgear. When the new card was installed, I could not connect to the net. I phoned blueyonder who explaned thay would need the mac address of the card before thay could connect me, so I pinged the card got the mac address gave it to them over the phone and behold I was connected. Its not a restriction in one way, as at any time I can connect to the selfcare section of the site and choose which of the two MAC addresses to use ( its now three MAC addresses I have registered ). but it is a restriction as I can only use one MAC address at a time, which ensures I only have one computer connected at any time. Hence the need for a router, to connect all three computers. Looking at it from another point of view, only the Mac addresses I have registered can use my connection to connect, this prevents abuse by dodgy engineers whom will splice into someones cable for £50.00, allowing unwelcome persons free access to www at my expence. :mad: Remember DSL is basicly just a lan connection, I dont understand it all but it works. I hope this clears up the misunderstading.
