cable modem setup

I have extensively been useing google but all results are things I have already done.

This question has nothing to do with security but I was hopeing someone here could help me. A friend of mine just got cable internet, the same one I have. She previously was useing dialup and still has her dialup acount hooked up. She purchased a PCI ethernet card as the ISP nolonger provides the card. I checked the min requirements and she has everything needed. I installed the card and the corect drivers, then rebooted and verified the card is detected and working properly. I then entered all of the TCP/IP and Wins settings as provided. All settings have been entered corectly. She has Windows 98, same as I do. Useing internet explorer settings on the controll pannel I checked her proxy settings and lan settings. All are corect acording to the settings provided by the isp.

However, she still has her dialup set up and im unable to get it to work with the new cable modem. The power light on the modem indicates it is on, and all other lights are in their proper state. But I cannot go to any web site untill I log her into the dialup acount, which tells me that it is somehow still dependant on the dialup.

I am woundering if anyone can help me as to how I can get it to stop useing her dialup acount and start useing the lan modem.

I return to her place tonight to get it working for her.

are you reciveing an IP address? run ipconfig and makesure...is the tcpip bound to the nic? and is it setup for dynamic?

useing winipcfg there is a ip address, initialy it shows the ppp settings, but chooseing the ethernet card is the same, they both have a ip address, and the ping returns an active conection

The IP for the NIC. Does it start with a 169 number? That's usually the "I can't find an IP so I'll put this one in" default for Windows 98/2000/etc. It sounds like to me that the browser and other "desktop" devices are still looking for the network connection to come from dialup rather than network. You might want to look at the Internet Options under IE to reset them (I'm in Linux so I honestly don't remember exactly where it is but it should be a tab called Connection).

Its been way too long sience I used 98 but... it sounds like you are ot getting the ip address correcly...try killing the ppp connection that may help...in winipcfg try releasing and renewing the ip address do they change? they shouldmost cable modems use dhpc

Mrs. Mittens is on the right track. One thing that you should also check is how your network card is setup. Most boadband services use dhcp for setup, you have to pay extra for a static ip if they will let you have it at all. What type of modem is it? brand name/model #?
The modem more than likely is a modem/router, so your nic should be set for auto-obtain. If you set the ip yourself, it may not be using the same ip-setup that the modem/router is using. Cable has an active connection anytime its plugged up, unless you have the crazy one-way cable that we had around here for a while, so its always connected to the isp. I would almost bet that your nic needs auto-obtain selected.

Just a quick check list (going from experience with BT):
Make sure that under the connection settings of IE it is set to never dial a connection.
(if you are prompted to dial up each time this could be it)
Go though the internet connection wizard and tell it to connect using LAN

If they have provided you with IP settings then, they most likely gave you a dns server IP?
If so pinging this IP willl be a good test as it is the one IP you should know for sure without having to use DNS.

never dial a connection is the setting checked, it does not ask for me to conect to the dialup acount since I set that. I did try useing the internet connection wizard to set up a LAN acount, I chose all the lan settings but still no web sites display untill i loggin to the dialup. A dns server ip was not provided as they now use dhcp to dynamicaly obtain the dns servers each conect. Form what i was told.

Not sure how to kill the ppp conection unless you mean to disconect from the dialup acount. I have disconected and rebooted a few times, before conecting to the dialup i first try to go to a web page to see if the cable modem is working. I was thinking that i may have to uninstall her dialup modem and dialup settings but im afraid of doing that because she needs something to use in the mean time.

i cant remember the ip off hand but i beleave thats what it started with, the modem does use dhcp as indicated in the manual. I cant hoever find any setting in internet options that will let me reset the settings. In the connections tab there are a list of dialup acounts, then below is the lan settings button. I chose the option never dial any of these conections, as some of my google results sugested. inside lan settings i choose to use the automatic configuration script and auto detect proxy settings.

My thought was that same that windows is still useing the dialup settings, tonight i will look for anything to reset to default setting. I did however notice that inside winipcfg the subnet mask was 255.255.0.0 which looked out of place to me because mine is 255.255.255.0 and we have the same isp

If the IP is starting with 169 then it's quite likely that the NIC is NOT getting an IP and cannot find the network. One sure way to force it is to remove or disable the modem from network settings (if it's not going to be used again).

One last thought: if it's not getting an IP there is an issue there. winipcfg is the command you'd want and hit the "show more info" button. That should give you the full listing. You can do a "Release all" and "renew all" to see if it's trying for a new address. Check if the lights on the modem are flashing. Try a new cable if need be.

I'm sure you have already investigated this avenue, but have you tried having a technician check the line? I had this problem when upgrading from dialup to DSL. The previous person that lived in the house had DSL so I thought it would be easy to switch, but there was a problem on the line and a technician had to come out and splice the line again. I even called the ISP and had them test the line and they told me it was fine over the phone. It might save you hours of troubleshooting software if the problem is as simple as malfunctioning hardware.

Just a suggestion...I hope you find a solution!

MsMittens, thanks for the URL im read it over and im gona try it very soon, just got the phone call asking me to go over at 7 which is about 40 minutes from now. Never though about the hardware, if i cant get it working though the software soon I will investigate. The lisghts on the modem are in their proper states as refernced by the manual so i just asumed it was ok. All cables are secure and conected both ends.

An update on the problem, I went over at 7 to see what i could do. I checked the winipcfg again and indeed it was a 169.x.x.x ip and the subnet mask 255.255.0.0

I did not know about default ip addresses before thank you MsMittens for bringing that up. I wrote down all of her dialup settings then I deleted all of the adapters and tcp/ip protocol to start fresh, I also went into internet options and deleted all her dialup acounts from there. Writeing them down before hand. This time i found a reset default settings and reset them all. I agin proceded to set up the ethernet card and new cable settings, but it refuses to conect to any sites. I checked everything was tight and pluged in and all settings were acording to the provided manual. Tomorow I will be phoneing the isp about the issue.

I was suprised when she told me that they did not provide her with the nic card and that she had to go out and buy one. When I got the same service they gave me a card. Its unfortunate that there are not any other cable internet providers for our area. I did a speed test once and discovered the speed I was getting was less then half the advertised, with tweaking I was able to get it to about 83% the advertised speed. Im concidering getting DSL myself.

Actually when I got my DSL, I had to provide my own NIC card as well. They did however provide me with the modem. Your cable company is generous. I am an extreme newbie here, so I can't tell you all the technical ramifications of why Cable has bandwidth issues, but I do know that efficiency is relative to how many people are accessing the same server as you are. During peak hours, evening and weekends, it tends to slow.

You probably thought about this. Do you have the right cable? My friend had the same problem and he had a cross-linked cable while he needed a straight true one... I don't know if that's correct english vocabulary, but I hope you get the picture.

Did you try pining loop back once the ppp was gone? for wahterver reason you re not reciveing an IP address, check the device manager and make sure the nic is working...oh and make sure the nic is set to auto detect its seed...the cable modem my isp droped off only talked 10m and i had a 10/100 card that was force set to 100 needless to say I had a bit of a problem connecting

disable the dialup account, and try to use the network then. someone else already said this, but make sure that the TCP/IP settings that you made are in reference to the nic card and not to the dialup modem.

Well I called today and we got nowhere, everything they told me to do I had already done, but we went over the whole process over the phone. But nothing, the ip address reported is still the 169.x.x.x. They siad however that at their end the ip address was releasing when i released all and that i was getting a 24.169.x.x ip at their end. So we deleted all of the adapters and all of the TCP/IP protocols and I removed the dialup modem card. I even deleted her dialup acounts. Starting fresh we put in the adapter drivers, verified in hardware profiles that the device is working properly. Then installed Microsoft TCP/IP from the protocol services in network. He said though that the modem was working corectly because of the ping responces he was getting. We verified the lights on the card and the lights on the modem were in their corect states and that all of the nessisary TCP/IP settings were set. Obtain ip address automaticaly, Disable WINS... The setting sprovided. But we are still in the dark.

This lady is a disabled woman who recently had a stroke, she asked them for the package where they come in to set it up but it turns out she ordered the self instalation.

I never thought of the cable being the wrong type, A friend of ours has phoned in and aranged for them to come and set it up for us so we will see what hapens, this way if it is a hardware problem as techwriter sugested they can swap the hardware. Or in the case of the wrong cable being provided they can replace it.

Im very much shocked at the troubles because my instalation was a breeze, every time i formate I am able to get it working again with little.no problems and its the same service and same provider. Didnt think of pinging again after the ppp was removed but while on the phone he said he was pinging, if I remember corectly first he said there was no problem with the ping responce then there was.

I had similiar problem with my cable (Rogers) under win2k. It's suddenly stop works, I spent whole night fixing it and can't figure out what's the problem. I even reinstalled OS, it didn't help. So I removed every TCP/IP protocols from network settings and removed NIC card aswell. After that I removed each registry key for TCP/IP, DHCP, NetBIOS, WinSock and NIC(don't forget reboot your system after deleting these key). And reinstalled everything starting from NIC. After that my cable started to work.

r4BBiT: Insidently Rogers is the ISP I have been refering to, Both computers, mine and the ladys are running Win98 SE. Im at home right now but just looked in my registry for the keys you mentioned, I found CurrentControllSet under system but not numerical Controlset. Below is a winsock but no dhcp or dns.

Im going to search google to see if I can find a win 98 equivalent for your registry keys. Its worth a try because as of right now they are going to come on sat and charge 50 dolars to set it up for her, as oposed to the regular 100 setup fee if she had ordered that package. Since we have no way of prooveing what package she ordered we came to a comprimise.

I'm not sure on this but, don't you need the Software installed for this type of connection for Windows 98? Did the modem come with a disk? 169.*.*.* is the Microsoft Auto Net IP which signifies a bogus connection. I would go into Control Panel and Yank all the Network Adapters, refresh, and reinstall. Good luck........

No. You shouldn't need it for this kind of connection. I've done direct connect before (albeit through a switch). Right now I wonder if the cable itself is of question. Before you get them over there for the $50 charge can you take your cable from home (the Twisted Pair -- aka Cat 5) and plug it in at your friends? The reason I ask is that we know your's works. ;)

From what I recall I needed the Disk when I got DSL through Verizon back when I was running Windows 98 but it must depend on the ISP anyway. Cable check.......

undo the cable modem setup prior to what i said below and reinstall it step by step.

hmm im not to sure, but i would definitely remove the 56k modem from the actual system, then remove it from windows. windows xp definitely makes the process easier, well if you are willing to spend the worthwhile 100 on the upgrade.

Problem has finaly been solved :) Today the tech came in to check things out. The problem was the modem was not registered on the acount at Rogers, and there also seemed to be a hardware malfunctioning of the modem causeing it to ocasionaly loose its conection.

To solve this he changed to modem and registered the new one on the acount. However now I am jelouse because she got a newer modem that is on a new hub that has less trafic. I asked him how much he wanted to hook me up with one but he said he cant even get himself one. I think because it has to go through main office.

So there we have it, everything works and im jelouse.

not sure if she will be billed the 50 dolars but as it stands right now she will afaik. However the tech said he cant do anything about the charge but agrees with us. So whats going to hapen is a friend of ours is going to phone Rogers and raise heck. She is very good at that kind of thing, she is the same woman who got the 100 dolar change droped to 50, and now since it was their fault hopefuly 0

try getting rid of the dial-up connect altogether it may help I think the computer is using the dial-up as priority to the cable

You dont need any special software to get this connection work, I have Win98 SE aswell and all I do to install this is just installing my network card and creating network connection. Rogers using DHCP server so you just have to pick: obtain dynamic ip and dns adress in connection properties.
