Can someone help me with a bios password problem. There is a dell latitude cp laptop that is at work. It has an authentication password on the bios that i cant get through. Its a used laptop so i cant call dell for support. Ive tried taking the cmos battery out. can anyone help?
It sounds like you're talking about a BIOS password. That can be a tough one to get around. I really think you need to look up the spec for the motherboard/BIOS. I'd suggest the Dell website and I'd also try their tech support. I don't have any recent experience with Dell support but I would think that the serial number off the laptop should be enough to get them to answer your question. Of course they probably won't help you if the machine was reported to them as stolen...
Generally speaking you should be able to pop a chip or set a dip switch on the MB to clear the BIOS password. You don't want to do these things randomly though!
So, can you tell us when specifically you get the request for the password?
As it loads into the OS? As it boots up?
Can you even get into the CMOS at all? I think DELL tends to use the F12 key, but not sure on all of their models since they change all the time.
What model is it? And, did you call DELL support -- it is unclear if you have already or not in your post.
Of course, their support isn't as good as it used to be -- mostly the people seem like sales reps, to me.

1. Try to get into the BIOS/CMOS setup. Most people don't hit both options to password protect on boot and on entrance to setup.
2. Try to see if anyone at where you work knows the password. If it is password protected, somebody should know.
3. Do a google search and see if you can find any tech specs on the machine. Somebody out there (including dell) should have some specs on how to reset a bios password.

Put in the service tag where it asks (or if you are paranoid, put in the model number of your system).
In left column, click documentation.
Look for a trouble shooting guide, look for jumpers...on my system it was JA81 (it shows you a pretty picture).
Look for a description of jumper settings, one of them will tell you how to put the machine in maintenance mode, which is used for clearing passwords.
Then after you are done, have a look around their support site, tons better than it used to be and lots of good info there (like what you can upgrade, very detailed specs).

Yeah I agree with Nebulus. Find the Jumpers settings, move them to a specific spot, take the battery out start the computer then shut it off, and restore teh jumpers and batters. If I remember correctly it will give you some type of checksum error but it will go away. That should solve your problem.
From what I can tell from your post you are talking about the CMOS password.

This will begin downloading a program called KILLCMOS.
This will create a boot disk that will clear the CMOS password.
You will have to disable any AntiVirus software BEFORE you download this program because it will otherwise be seen as a trojan and will be removed/quarantined, etc.

This will tell you the master bios password according to the description, also posted on your other thread :)
iF YOU STILL NEED IT....i MAY HAVE ACCESS TO THE LITTLE TOOL THAT RESETS THE PW....???? MAY I say.! ;o)
Let me rephrase that...if you visit some of the newsgroups... you'll surely find it..
try calling in dell tech support (1-800-456-3355) if the computer you bought is for a small bussiness account and make sure you keep your service tag (a unique alpha numeric number at the bottom of the system) ready it really doesnt matter if you are not the owner of the system, as long as the system is with you and you have the service tag and you belong to the same company that actually bought the system.
