I hope I put this in right forum if not sorry.
I have about 4 computers that I need to share one internet connection with. I would like to use a proxy server on the internet connected machine. I did a search on the internet for free proxy servers but all I got was proxy servers that you connect to after you are online.
If anybody here knows of any free proxy servers that I cold download it would help.

cheyenne yu didn't specify which OS platform you wanted to have a proxy for, Is windows implied on these cases?. If so,there are softwares like wingate and such. If Linux is specified, well you could try this site and jus modify that script to (contain your network specific settings) handle the NAT and enjoy!.

You can make an lrp (linux router project) box, and you need only a pentium or a 486 with 2 network cards. An lrp box is very stable, you have total control, ...., you mustn't shut it down. You can make the comparison with a profesional cisco router.

Maybe I will write a tutorial on this, but I think the site here above is a very good tutorial. You must only do four things: 1) collect the necessary hardware (2 NIC’s + Pentium)
2) make your floppy disk with the lrp os on it + the modules for your NIC’s
3) boot up, configure your dhcp server (change the dns name’s)
4) Configure the clients: - check Obtain DNS automatically
- open a command box and type ipconfig /renew

just a quick question while ur all on the subject. Why does it say under my name on the left that a proxy has been detected (i hope its still there when i post this, if not disregard this question).

If you use cable, dsl go to one else go to two
1) If you go to Extra -> internet options -> connections -> lan-config. in your internet explorer and if you see that there is a checkbox signed you use a proxy
2) If you go to Extra -> internet options -> connections -> dubble click on your connection and if there is a checkbox signed you are also Using a proxy

If you share your connections with ics (internet sharing by microsoft) i think you als are detecting as using a proxy

Ask your question in a new thread praveendasika,as to your answer...there're several options...you could get them on a LAN,connect them via parallel ports...fcourse if it's just dialup it really doesnt matter:D
Why use a proxy, a software router is just as good and can in some cases be more secure, try freesco (www.freesco.org) or Smoothwall, an opensource (I think) router/VPN/firewall linux distro based OS thingy, check it out at www.smoothwall.org
