I am lokking at buying redhat Linux and I am wondering what the best version is for newbies? Thanks.
This is a security forum.
The best place to ask this question imho is linuxquestions.org
Another opinion I have is that there is no suck thing as 'the best linux'.
You can obtain various versions of *nix on linuxiso.org.
Furthermore this question has been asked a dozen times before.
You could search the forums for the previous discussions.
U r damn right noODle!
Just a question: Isn't Linux free? Does u all buy ur distros?
I downloaded Redhat, densk for free... I'd not like to be in illegal situation...
The only one worth buying is Suse...cause its that damn good and all the rest are practically free :D
Second the others here are so very right... Linux distros is like going to a personal tailor..
Get what fits you most...
Oh yes, lots of threads here covered this topic before, please use the search function..
Anyway download distros here : http://www.linuxiso.org for free
I had Red Hat Linux Professional 8.0 installed with Win XP. Within one month they released a new version.
I like it but I am too lazy to learn. Until now I still don't know how to install softwares in Linux. There are many things I can't do with Linux & that is why I am using Win XP most of the time.
Never heard about RPM shakira?
i think for newbies the best version is Mandrake Linux any late version...since RedHat is for more advanced user....so i recommend start with Mandra then go onto RedHat
I recommend Mandrake a lot more then redhat. Once you get a little more familliar with linux, move onto a better OS like Slackware. Linux is all about configuration, flavors like Redhat IMHO take away from that and leave users thinking, "hey, it is working, i'm all done" and nothing gets learned. Familliarize yourself with routine tasks in Mandrake, then move on.
redhat is every bit as easy as mandrake.Quote:

I`ve tried RedHat , Mandrake and SuSE ( i am newbie:) ).. i think u should buy the SuSE ....
i agree with buying SuSe, its better than red hat and mandrake put together.
Mandrake is a nice place to start. They have a free online training program called Mandrake Campus. I did most of the course 2 years ago, haven't been back recently, it was pretty good at the time. But what do I know, I think any free training is good!! You sign up for it at http://www.mandrakeclub.com/
I like both RedHat and Debian. RedHat installed itself pretty much. I just had to select a few options. Debian on the other hand, well I had to get my hand dirty with that. But, I learned a lot. If you like to tinker try Debian.
Haha! SuSe should add half of AntiOnline to the payroll for advertising, There is like a million of us on here that use SuSe and tell others to.
also, Im one of them, use SuSe Linux, buy it and youll see why we all use it.
/me sniffs slacccckwaaarre... gennnntttooooo..... we'll send you money!
Everyone here knows my takes on Linux, im a supporter of SuSe Linux and for Free BSD, either one owns, SuSe is a hell of alot easier though. If your new to this, look for a thread called "Operating System Selection" It has a ton of info and i think you may like it.
SuSE all the way baby!
i agreed with Shrekkie, it just like ur personal taylor...
but 4 me, if u love to explore stuffs, try redhat.. i tried madrake, but still in love with redhat.. :) ..
if u have time, just try them all, after all, lots of them are free... there will be something that suit for u
You can use which ever version of Linux, but I don't see why you would buy it, when you could download it freely. What you might want to do, is buy a book that has linux cd's. That way, not only will you be able to learn, but you'll have the cd's you want.

To let the people making it know they are appreciated.
also to feed those starving programmers!Quote:

Man I just installed Gentoo yesterday, took me practically two days cause it compiles everything ....but its ****in worth it...
Anyway MDK, RH and many others are GUI-installs, nice and easy... but heh I even don't have a gui (X) installed on the gentoo now.. I must say I learned more in two days installing gentoo from prompt then being busy with gui-distros the lat months...
But like i said before... choose what you like... and what you can.
Next one on mah list is Slackware :D
iv installed Free BSD like 8 times, so im ok with no GUI based installs.
i started out with redhat, and i have used mandrake and slackware, personally i think they are all pretty much the same, i don't really think it makes a difference which distro you start off with as long as you are willing to be patient and willing to learn and ask questions and trouble shoot, (as you would have to do with any operating system).
Or RTFM. and your right, they are all the same, unless you mean install and updates, thats the only real difference your going to notice.Quote:
