Red hat 8.0 is good for server sort of things, if u are beginner or intermediate user go for Mandrake or susi.lastly its ones own like or dislike for things that come into front basicakally all have same kernel
I have been using RedHat9.0.
But since you have already used slackware and RH I suggest go to a *BSD such as OpenBSD, NetBSD, or FreeBSD.

No offense intended, but why not search the forums? This has been covered more times than I can count (hell, there's even a link to one in the similar threads at the bottom of this thread). I think, if you search the forums, you'll find a number of excellent responses to which distributions individuals use and why they use them.

yup avdven is right...
Btw i use gentoo and suse....
I've used Red Hat 8.0 for quite a long time, it's great, you can secure it quite well. But you could have a look to Knoppix 3.2 as well (www.knopper.net), a Debian(unstable)-based linux distribution. It's quite complete.
slack and gentoo
currently RH 7 - games server
have only played with RH6-7, Mandrake 9 (looked good for a windows guy), Lycorsis (give me windows)
And this is from a person who is not really into linux.. I am checking things out.. suppose working on a SCO- Unix server don't count huh (ok i replace a bloody cooling fan in the sys-and it was when i had less grey hair)
cheers
I use SuSE 8.1 and RedHat 9. I prefer RH 9 though, so i use it more than SuSE.
<edit> 8:02 Pm
Ouch, i prefer RH 9 and i get negged. :p (i still like SuSE you know) :p
I started using Linux about 2 months ago , but right now im using Mandrake 9.0
I use Slackware, and have also used Mandrake Linux.
Iv used Red hat, Slack, K-12, turbo, mandrake ...SuSe owns them all :)
Slackware, but I've also used RedHat.
Hail, how are you gentlemen ?
All my friends who are linux geeks\nerds use slackware, and when i tell them i want to use linux and i am going to install red hat, they say that red hat sucks, and big sucks! hehe
I wouldnt go for mandrake... i think it wont be a real linux experience.
Linux dot org, a webiste with a nice review of distributions
Farewell
ive got Debian on my 2 client machines, running as unstable. and Mandrake 9.0 on my server. I prefer Debian for my client machines, only because of its packaging system. on a server, that isnt the problem as i dont have to install packages all the time. I've also used knoppix a few times. As a recscue disk. And i gave a few copies to 100% windoze admins at my school for them to play around with.

I started off with RedHat I got with a magazine..
then SuSE all 7 cd's and the DVD..
and now..
well guess..
I started w/ Caldera from a Linux Dummies book, moved to Mandrake, now I'm all about the FreeBSD.
I like both Debian and RedHat. RedHat pretty much sets it self up and with Debian you have to get your hands a little dirty.
Ive only used Mandrake 9.0 since im on 56k with little to no money. But unable to use it very well since i lacked a hardware modem (damn winmodems haha). soon as i get one i will be using that again.

Heh, where to begin....
Since this is a "first" OSs post ill go through it:
I started with a Windows 95 box 3 years ago, it was my first computer, i ****ed it up and so i got a new one with 98 SE on it, use that for about... hmm a while (i screwed my first one within like 5 months so within 6 months, so i got the one im on now which was top of the line at the time) aftre a while i heard about Linux and so i bought a teach yourself Linux in 24 hours book which came with Caldera, Well i was at schol and byt this time i had a computer for almosy 8 months and was bored with what they taught me so i deleted office and all 12 napsters on the 2 GB HDs at school and Partitioned and installed Linux....it was my first time and it worked the first time (RTFM pays off :) ) wel i was like holy ****, this rocks!!!!! then i bought mandrake 7.1 i liked it, it worked, bought redhat 6.1....hate it with a passion, bought SuSe 8.1 professional....LOVE IT and i recommend it to ANYONE :) read my sig for more info. SuSe RULES.
I`ll skip a full OS history as that would take too long.. as for Linux, right now I use Libranet (so Debian) which I have found it to be very stable and all around a good OS.
There are many of us out there that would disagree with this comment.Quote:

I use Mandrake and love it, it does what I want, when I want and is stable and secure along with being well supported. You can make it as easy or as hard as you want.
One of the great advantages of Mandrake is that it does gently break in the average Windows user into the world of Linux ... cant be a bad thing for those starting out with *nix.
For the real linux feel, try an expert text install of Mandrake or any of the other GUI install based distro's. Get down and dirty with the commandline.
Kudo's to those who use the source based distro's like Gentoo, Sorcerer, MageSource et al... if I had access to a high speed connection I would probably look down that path also .....
Hmm... I use Red Hat since version 6.2 and I like it the most. But I have already used SuSe and Mandrake and they are good too, but i prefer Red Hat. At the moment I have Red Hat 9.
man i use slack 9.0 and works fine...but who cares what distros do we use??
here's another question : what is the big difference between all theese distros??
slack : fast & stable
rh : user friendly (?)
free bsd : very fast
peanut :) : very small but has X on it..and works fine from what i've heard
i might be wrong...
I use RedHat and Debian. One of my friend swears by Slackware.
i'm running Redhat 8.0 and FreeBSD 4.8 on my vmware laptop. at work, all Redhat 9.

I went through several linuxes and stuck with freebsd and the attached jpeg is why (intended as humor) its wee bit racy ,so now you have been warned.
well.. as many said.. u better start with mandrake and then advance to other version..
till getting there u may need to get some basics.. for exemple know the command lines and other staff.. the easy way i would recommend is to keep ur windows if ur new so u can get rid of both Linux and Windows when necassary without much trouble.. if u have win98 or less and wanna install with it 2K(XP or 2000 or even 2003) then install 98 first.. then put 2k after that u may proceed to installing Linux..
Before starting all that "*"(hell)"*" u better devide ur hard drive to diffrent partitions 2or3 deppending on the number of the OS(Operating Sysytems) u wanna install..
I hope m not repeating what was said previously in the forums.. Have fun.. and don't forget that 98Se or 98 don't know ext2 or ext3 or NTFS pertiontion..
Ciao
I just installed Mandrake 9.1 on my laptop, and boy has it matured since it's early days! 9.1 is the first version to "natively" support the NTFS, and has no trouble resizing an earlier partition. As far as it "not being a true linux experience", I do most of my work in a virtual terminal, and only start up X if I feel like a good game or browsing the web with pics. Other than that, give me my command line and lynx any day!
embro1001
If you like the commandline - have a look at links-graphic (its on your CD's), graphical browser for the console ... another reason not to start up X :)

I have just emereged from mandrake to gentoo ;-)
I have the bsd's (Free, Net & Open).
I have college linux and redhat 9.0. My favorite just now is redhat 9.0 (shrike)
I got a broadband service to my house and they allow me to run my redhat as a webserver and pop3 server. not bad for £30 per month.
Incidently if anyone is looking for a copy of the isos for the various linux distributions or any others PM me and we can arrange something.
Phat_Penguin ....
Yeah, I saw that when I was selecting packages, and I think I installed it, but I forgot about it. Thanks for the remind!
Slackware!
Right now I use Libranet (so Debian), used to use Suse. Also use OpenBSD as well.
HI There,
I'm using OpenBSD, and i have SuSE8.1, but OpenBSD attracks me more cause it has less flaws, (Ideal webserver) it will take a time to get it right ( install ) but when u have it on your box it will run anything, although it,s a BSD box, (which is different to a LINUX dist, so compiling could have problems, but then again openbsd has a perfect system for that, ports or packages, so u can install virtu, anything.. ) it runs like sweet butter trough your harddrive.
First it will be brains but when it runs, (proper) itwill run forever,
when u are considering tis, read the FAQ and Man pages available on the site below, which are more exellent then any other OS i have EVER Seen,
:AS400,SCO,CGI,SuSE,Redhat,M$,Debian,(which is nice too)
Plus a bonus, I'ts secure!

Slackware and Gentoo... splendid combination
