AP new feature - u like it?

Folks,
as u may noticed since today in the antipoint center APs includes now the poster name.
(official annoucement )

I'm not sure that will cope neg abuse since AP goal is to regulate AO membership basing on quality posts.
ppl who get negged will get a revange feeling and may neg back. This will be an AP abuse since neg won't be a targeting crappy posts but AO members.

I've seen many times post with a vote script. I'd never start such a thread and I think that's definitly the moment to write one, in order to get a general AO member feeling of that new feature.

I see your point, but I still think this will help the system.

I think that knowing you are not anonymous and may be held accountable will make people think twice about both their positive and their negative posts.

Even for the neg AP's, hopefully having a name associated will push people to provide more useful comments. If you get negged and it actually has some constructive criticism rather than profanity or no comment at all maybe the more rational of us would be less likely to resort to a retaliatory posture.

Seeing who gives you a neg almost gives you a a "revenge" feeling. I fear that some people will neg back at the ones who gave them the neg.

But maybe it will stop AP abuse.

Well I guess some measure of maturity is needed then, isn't it?

Retribution is inevitable but if people start that death spiral of trying to "get back" at everyone, they'll soon learn that it doesn't pay.

I'm all for attaching names to antipoints. Hell, it saves me time typing in my nick.

Does this counter measure enough?

By showing names folks will hesitates to neg ppl with a greater number of pos. coz the neg back will be very harmful.
I think this new feature is unfair especially for newbies. 1 possible consequence is that nobody will neg others (except ppl with huge pos). That's mean more or less that the AP system is not a real AO regulator...

But maybe am I too pessimistic...

I love it. I finally found out who had been negging me needlessly with rude comments. I have no intention of negging them back, but it was nice to send a note to them via PM and tell them to stop, to share my feelings about it and move on. I feel somewhat justified. You're not going to have the people hiding behind the system anymore. If they feel strongly enough about a post then they'll neg it and it will probably be a more responsible choice rather than just passing them out for no reason whatsoever, just to balance.

KorpDeath is right...there is a level of maturity to this new system. There should have been in the beginning, but every system is open to abuse, especially when it's anonymous.

Even if people try to get back at others for valid AP comments (which might add another job to the moderation/admin team as far as mediation) it will be stopped and someone may even lose their account for abuse.

Thank you Jupiter for this cool feature. I'm very happy about it.

I totally agree with the new system.

I also don't think we need to worry too much about revengist attitudes. People who get negged from now on more than likely will deserve it, because those doing the negging will know that their name will be attached. If someone feels that they have been negged unjustly, they probably won't go negging for retribution because they also know that their name will be attached.

I also think that less people will be so quick to throw around the negs knowing that their name will go with their assignment.

Lastly, I think that this opens up new doors for people who do feel they have been unjustly negged. They now have the option of sending a PM to the user who negged them with their exact thoughts on the matter. No more "I have a question about an antipoints assignment" messages. Now you can say, "Hey, I made a mistake. There's no need to neg me into all damnation for that."

I don't know, theres been loads of posts on this subject and the general feeling or the way I feelt the general feeling was, is that it shouldn't force you to name who you are..simply because it leaves Newbies exposed for example, if some ne new, with a tiny ammount of AP's wants to Neg a 11dot senior for something, that senior could turn around and dump a huge amount of Negs on a person...
theres a million different permutations where being Anon helps alot, and I for one belive that this is gona lead to further flaming wars and all kinds of trouble.

I kind of have a problem with this. Sure it's good for positive AP's, but I think you will see that a lot of people will be hesitent to neg anyone for fear of retribution. I can see both sides of the argument, but like Networker said, the lowbies/newbies won't dare to neg a Senior/Addict because of the retribution that can be slapped down. There are some people here that carry enough weight to singlehandedly ban a newbie/lowbie if they felt like it.

This could be bad...

oh and for those of you all for self regulation/maturity I would like to point you to the Full Disclosure mailing list. In the past week it has become decidedly apparent that self regulation does NOT always work. That list has gone down hill so fast it's not even funny. Hopefully it will recover, but I would sincerely hate to see AO go through the same thing they are over there.

I love it. I only got to see one of the people that was negging me blankly because iv gotten more since then but at least i saw one name. I think itll stop the abuse, most people going around negging EVERYONE will now think twice, and if they want to neg a post theyll at least include a reason now, even if its just there name....at least this way you can actually PM them and ask why they did it. Im all for it.

I think it will keep people from negging for fear of being negged back.

I have to say that I think showing the AP'ers name is a fantastic idea and will hopefully take the AO community to a higher level. I just hope that the younger / more destructive members will either learn to live with it or leave.

But is not giving out negs a good thing? I know if I see somebody being rude or nasty, I will neg them. Regardless of who they are, or why they were posting it.. For instance. I negged somebody who made the following comment
"as for the M/-\D L33t skilz of Netstat....Your a fool....you don't know what your on about...
Sit down...shut up and read something. "

My reason for negging this person is because their comment was not needed, the only purpose it served was to be rude. While what they posted might have been correct, netstat isn't an elite hacker tool, but it did not need to be posted in this manner. However, as this person has a really high green count, I might think twice about doing the same in the future.

On the other hand.. I had someone using two different nics to assign me antipoints. I had always thought it was the same person, and I did report it to the AO admins.. and now I can see that I am correct. Of course the person claims it was their younger cousin who just happened to have identical information in their profile..

Given that the boards are moderated much more now than they were when JP was running the show, do we even need antipoints anymore? Perhaps it should just be changed to a notify moderator type thing.

Being relatively new here, and just beginning to understand the AP system, also having no axe to grind, I feel that I can comment from a neutral stand point. It would appear that abuse whether in a forum or on the street seems to come from people with a recognisable level of intelligence, and is best ignored. Regarding criticism in general, it is reasonable to ask why it was given, and from who it came from, I'm sure most people face some sort of critiscism on a daily basis at work or school etc, but don't go after everyone whose comment's they don't like or disagree with. If the new system leads to a better overall standard of post's that can only be good, also people may give a bit more thought to their reasons, motives for critiscism prior to doing so. after all it is a forum , not a court

I think it's cool though. I mean I got negged a lot and I thought it was by the same person. But I found out it wasn't, so I will live with it (even thouhg I still think I got negged for the wrong reasons).

There's good and bad to it. The AP system should have been fine the way it was, but people abuse it, probably how it will be now that people's names will go along with the APs they give out. Though hopefully the good thing is it will keep people from negging other people "just because" or something. And if someone thinks they did not get deserve what they got, they can PM that person. Hopefully it won't start fights, but it probably will. Though I think it's a step in a good direction because now honest people can at least know if they get negged a lot they can look up who it is and not have to wonder if it's all by the same person. I know I have a bit more peace of mind.

And just on a side note, I would like to say that I think JupCorp is doing a good job of running AO now. It's not all what we are use to, some things have changed, but I think they are attacking the problems at hand in a good way and trying to please us just as JP would. I just wanted to say thanks!

You are right. I can see the PM's and the anamosity happening here. However, I can also see it as "You dished it, you deal with it." That's how I see it. I mean, now I can bet my left nut all the stupid **** will be over with.

There is a good side to it and a bad side to it.

Good side is that you can finally see who negs you. (which is what probally all you wanted)

But the bad side to it is that it will just create more negativity and more negs for people.

Such as someone negs another person... it shows there name then they get mad so they find a post that such one has made an negs him.

Personaly I think this is a great idea. Now that I know who has benn constantly dragging up old posts to neg my perhaps they will stop...if not it gives us the ability to call out those that are abuseing the system.

I have been reading for a while, but only registered recently.

APs, whether positive or negative, *should be* indicative of the releavance, not all negs are unjust.

If a newbie negs a Senior member unjustly, I would hope said members would show the maturity that got them the status they have and not just dump neg points back. On the other hand, I would expect the Senior members to PM said abuser and inform them of the error of their ways.

Like others, I hope this will end the abuse, tag-team negging, etc that AO is trying to end.

i personally like the idea of the poster showing ... because now i can see who gave me positive or negative APs and from now on i dont think there will be thta many negs without a reason...people will think through why hey wan to give negs and write a good reason ....

But the heavy handedness of higher level users negging a lower level user unjustly is still there. I will use myself as an example. I signed up for the Authenex A-KEY about six weeks ago. There is a thread where people where talking about how long it took to get their key and I had been following that thread from the beginning. I got my key yesterday so I searched for the thread and stated I had got the key after six weeks and I would try it out that night. Next thing I know, I got negged hardcore. Here is what is listed on my antipoints.

Now , I am not trying to complain. I am just showing how much damage a high level user can do to a newbie.
1. He was not involved in the discussion in any way. He never posted.
2. Who is he to tell me not to bring up old threads? If they are relevent, I see no problem and there is nothing in th FAQ about not bringing up old threads.
3. If my post was short, which I believe is better than a long winded post at times, it was becuase I had not tried the key out yet. Once I understand the device, and no one else has posted about it's use and functions, I will post about my findings.

Now, I want to state again that I am not trying to complain about getting negged. It happens. The new function in the AP system allowed me to see who negged me and I did try to contact the user to understand where he was going with this. But, if a newbie negged a high end user and that user wanted to hurt the newbie he could do so.

Just my two cents.

come on AO member let's not discuss here who got negges before without a reason or a for a shity reason... the new feature is here to stop that ...

Let's at LEAST give this a try before shooting it down or complaining. Going into something with a negative attitude doesn't help the situation either. Try and be positive and go with it for a couple of weeks. If any major abuse happens, it will be handled, I'm sure of that. What do we have to lose? A few points for the larger sacrifrice of stopping the AP abuse? Mad because you can't hide behind childish comments anymore? I mean, what's the problem here?

If the system fails and it's more trouble than it's worth, it will be removed, no doubt.

It's at least worth the try. Unless you can think of something better?

Well now is a nice time to come clean. I admit it. Ever since I joined AO peaple have been gang neging me... for like a year I was stuck in the gray and red zones. Some of them peaple left behind a few names and without checking if it was really them or not... over time I began to neg back (RUTHLESSLY). But now I know who is really who & I feel very bad about what I've done. And as for the peaple who made bad posts and probably deserved the neg... I also was very rude with the AP messages which were sent to them so im sorry for that too.

Yea, Iv gotten a couple PMs today saying they got a couple from me that i dont even remember giving, so before i go off on the Mr hypocrit of the year award, I checked out my AP cener which i should do more often, theres like 5 negs in there that i dont remember giving, and the other day when i had people over and let them use my computer, i went to work thinking it would be ok, and on my Linux box theres a browser that has my account saved where you dont need to log in....well, Im guesising they thought it would be funny to give out some negs for the hell of it. Soooo if you have a neg from me that you thought was unfair, copy an paste the message into a PM to me so i can "play detective" and boost you back up...and if when im done if those few people that thought it was cute to log in as me are still able to type with the fingers they have left they will be sending an apology too. this has me a bit mad, my points hit hard so its not a funny prank to play on someone. But it will be fixed, just send a PM with the copy and paste so i know how many bones to break.... i mean, how many people to boost back up.

More useless space wasted... so I'll chip in... I sign my name everytime I give something out (very rare nowadays... since they don't matter) but now everything is going to be popularity contest. New members or people w/o a million greenies won't give out negs... people will kiss ass... and so forth...

Speaking as the often maligned "senior member with 11 dots" ;) I'm not gonna neg ya back. It's stupid, and I have more things to do with my time. *IF* you send me one that I find completely offensive, yes, you're going to get a PM from me, but all you have to do is delete it if you don't want to read it. And like I said...that's only for ones I find personally offensive, which I've gotten quite a few of in the past. However, I have a pretty good idea that's going to stop now ;) If you neg me, I may not agree with your reason, I may call you a total moron or worse to myself or to members I'm close to, but I'm NOT going to take time out of my day to "retaliate".

Most of us who have achieved the almighty 11 dots are pretty decent folks you know, and we don't go around looking for people to slam off the face of the earth with our AP assignments. It's a concern that has been brought up many times among the senior members that we have too much weight when assigning points...I can take a post (by myself, and I'm certainly not the only one) from a nice middle of the road no points assigned at all to completely negative with one assignment. The only time I'm likely to do that is if it's a really really really bad post, because my negative opinion doesn't mean the whole site feels that way, and I can suicide an entire thread in no time at all if I choose to do so, given there is more than one post in the thread. *Most* of us are decent people, and we take these things into consideration. Not all of us are, but to me, this is going to take care of that too. You are going to be able to tell the "good" senior members from the "bad" ones.

I'm just curious whether JupMedia has considered NAT'ing firewalls. I used to work at a rather large facility where every single computer showed up as one single IP to the outside world. Does this mean that no two people who work at that facility are allowed to assign positive or negative AP's to the same post? How could you really tell? Frankly, you can't. Just something to think about.

I think it's great if used properly. But, AOer's will maybe post more meaning
comments as said above :-T
