No, normally you cannot control other people's computer just by telnetting into them, unless they have some backdoor or something installed. And this is cracking, don't do it.
If a backdoor is installed, you control the pc using the command prompt. Also there is a better tool available then telnet; netcat. Find it here: http://www.atstake.com/research/tool...ork_utilities/.
Definitly learn how to work with it.
In a comp like XP type telnet

then type the a IP like 127.0.0.1 25 <-- 25 is the port# for like a mail server
And yes you'll be asked for commands and sometimes even a login.
But its not going to have screen dump or mouse control & the many options that alot of these remote admin tools have. Oh and by the way you can telnet to servers (legally) with telnet://drill.hackerslab.org and there are a few places in the http://happyhacker.org site.
You can also like telnet to a network printer (printer with a networkcard not a shared printer)
then you can adjust the settings .
You can also connect to a router or a switch and provided you have the password can configure the settings here also.
Telnet can be a dangerous tool ... if you use it on devices you are not supposed to be on you might get in trouble ;)

Yep, I had that problem a while ago, somebody was changing the settings of my router. So I just switched it off, a few hours later I connected my fathers laptop to it and changed the settings back. To access the quick config page of my router you don't need to enter a password so some things can be changed easily.

I have an old pc converted to a linx router (distro on floppy disk) NAT and firewall enabled with dhcp etc...
No problems as yet ...

As for the telnet ...keep in mind it's mostly used for troubleshooting and not for malicious things. :rolleyes:
But it's not a problem anymore, I configured the firewall of the router (it's wireless) to not allow external incoming connections, so only computers from within the network can acces the page.

Whew! That said there are many other uses for telnet like the ones mentioned here since its basically a generic plain text connection you can connect to many services which are also plain text like SMTP or even HTTP, sometimes the server will echo back what you type sometimes not(so you're flying blind :) ). For instance I often use telnet to dump the source of webpages to a file for later inspection. ie:
telnet www.google.com 80 > google.html
GET / HTTP/1.0
hit enter twice and google will respond to your request and send the page to you which is then piped to a file called google.html,with a little practice and a good script language, scripts can be written using these type of techniques to automate many network procedures including vulnerabilty testing. After you understand telnet, I too recomend you download and play with Netcat which is more versatile and powerful than a basic telnet client.

scriptkiddie18, one wayof using telnet to talk to someone else is to log onto their unix machine and use talk. Just a suggestion.
In short, yes. But it isn't that simple. You must be a user on the machine and have proper rights to be using the telent aspect of the system. Once connected, hypothetically to a linux box let's say, you can enter commands as if you were in front of the keyboard at the local machine. Telnet, however, is a protocol that is slowly becoming outdated. It is far wiser, whenever possible, to use ssh instead of telnet. Ssh is a secure shell as opposed to telnet which sends all information in plain-text across the internet. With ssh, all traffic is encrypted. Basically, when you connect to a linux box with a telnet server running, you are transmitting your username and password to anyone listening. With ssh, they are both encrypted, making it an infinatley more secure way of communicating.Quote:

i think you mean scan the ip for open ports then telnet to them but this isn't really done any more except for telnet port (23), pop (110) and smtp (25). even then netcat is better. you can scan the port, see whats on them and do a fair job of finding out the OS all in one shot:
nc -vv -n -w 1 xxx.xx.xxx.xx 20 21 23 25 80 110
or
nc -vv -n -w 1 xxx.xx.xxx.xx 1 - 1024 >>scan.txt
although this can be done with less "noise", this illustrates the principle
yes i am a newb and for some reason i cant get netcat to work...can anyone help me out and tell me why...also does anyone know how to bind something to an exe file...the reason i need this is because my gf's dad is very strict and he looks at everything in her e-mail i wanted to send her a message like this...anyone wanna help me out?
Your gf's dad reads her email?? Holy crap! Unless he's pretty adept at using computers she could just have another (secret) email account and you could send stuff like this to her that way. I haven't tried netcat on this comp bc I somehow thought it was like nmap.....something that shouldn't be used with windows. I've seen people bind trojans with exe files....but other than that I have no experience with binding things with exe files. Besides, there must be an easier way to slip stuff to your girlfriend. (I personally don't use trojans for several diff reasons)
If you want to sent her something for her eyes only, hide the message in a jpeg file use a steganography program. there's a bunch of free ones out there. maybe this is what you mean by "bind". other than that it's like keezel said.
as far as netcat goes what os are you using and did you get a version made for it? what happens when you tupe NC at the command prompt?

maybe this girl has respect for her father who obviously cares allot about her to take the time to watch over her. This type of story is refreshing compared to those of parents that blame the internet or socity in general for their shortcomings as parents when something bad happens.
