Ok I'm redoing this thread since Hillbillyh8ter didn't like me and the whole thread went suicide.

Ok, I wrote a thread about this problem about a month ago. Now its coming back to haunt me.

I have an ASUS A7S333 AMD Motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2200
300 Watt Allied Power supply and of course hd, flopyy etc.

I get everything put together plug the PS in and turn on the computer but nothing happens. I do it one more time and see the fans starting to turn then they stop. I can not get the computer to stay on.

I've tried another PS but have the same problems.

I've left only the power connection to the M/B connected and still had the same problem.

Have you tried another motherboard? I haven't looked over the other thread entirely, but check the mother board for burn marks and such... it could be a bad board. The PS should not be hooked up with only the MoBo.. it should always be connected to a full load. I know nihil (hope I spelled that right) mentioned that you might not have enough power in your last thread, but that's bs.. so you can ignore it. A complete system can be ran off of under 200W, so it'd boot regardless.

The motherboards not fried because I just opened it up 3 hours ago. Its brand new.

This is my third round with this motherboard not working. I've had three separate M/B's. Its gotta be something I'm doing. Either that or I'm just having a really bad month.

I'm leaning towards perhaps a RAM issue here...remove and reseat, then see if it will POST.

Some of the better M/B's on the market tend to be picky about the RAM they will run with, so that generic alternative (not an accusation here chey...) that has an attractive price isn't always the best route to go.

I trust you took all steps to insure static electricity didn`t fry the board while install.

Allenb: I would say Ram but the board won't stay on past 2 seconds. Surely its something else, but I'll swap some ram just to make sure.

I am now very suspicious of the CPU..............OK HTregz, I accept your diagnosis......but why does it not work....I have come across machines from big companies, that I would describe as "friday afternoon specials"...no names, no pack drill............I am not paying lawyers to defend me for the rest of my life :p It may SAY 300w on his box, but DOES IT DELIVER IT?...I agree entirely that you are correct, if it is set up with minimal accessories............

Allenb.................know what you mean....but the fans should turn...even with no RAM.....it does not even look for that until about interrupt 27/28h in the Post?

You are right about the PS though Nihil. A lot of PS's say that they deliever 350W but onl deliver 300 or so, but Surely a 300W PS should be enough to run a AMD Athlon XP 2200, one hd, one Cd-rom and on Floppy.

I'm quitting right now. Had to much of this damn computer.

I'll probably be back on it tommorow with someone else to help me along. Maybe he can see soemthing I'm not.

This sounds like it could be a grounding problem. I had a similar problem with a pc i was building a while back.

Have you got the board in the case? If you have you can try taking it out laying it on a flat surface plug everything into the board and see if that works.

The pc i built would not fire up for me when i put everything in the case so i layed everything out on the floor, got it to fire up. Put it all back in the case and no good.

It turned out to be a mounting post in the wrong place that was causing a short on the board.

Just a quick thought. I don't think anyone else covered this...

Have you tried another power cord? That has thrown me off in the past. Also once had the jumpers on the motherboard not set correctly.

Both of those kept my computer from powering up.

I'll try this stuff tommorrow, but don't think its the power cord one who watches because I've been using the same power cord for another computer that does work.

Just curious, is that a A7S333 or an A7V333 ?

OK ... first ... I believe the problem you refered to the first time was a problem with a P4 2.8 on an ASUS P4P800 mobo, etc ... that problem may, repeat MAY have been caused by you, ( Strange problems again ) but you sent it back and said

I am really WAGging it here:
The motherboard you have is based on a SIS745 chipset, which came out for the Athlon model 6 chip, and auto configures the Vcc ( cpu core voltage ) based on what the cpu itself tells it.

My problem:
The Athlon model 6 utilized a normal Vcc of 1.75 volts. The XP 2200 is either a model 8 or model 10 which uses a Vcc of 1.65 volts. Neither the SiS site nor the ASUS users manual describes the specs on the Vcc for the SIS745 chipset, but it may not recognize the lower voltage because it came out before they were released.

If you used a company which put it together AND tested it, it should work unless, as stated before, you or the shipping company fried something with static. ( you've already ruled out the power supply ).

As stated in the suggestion in the suicidal thread, if you tested it without the cpu and memory installed, with the case speaker and external speakers attached ( IF your version of the board has the intigrated sound ) and you received nothing as far as POST messages, it might be the mb is bad. But I would first test the cpu ( on something like an ASUS A7V8X) and/or check your mb by using a Model 6 version ( something like a 1500+ or 1600+ which only used a Vcc of 1.75v) IF that is possible. I am curious as to the results.

Note: AMD does not list that mb as recomended for that cpu AMD Athlon™ XP Processor Recommended Motherboards If the company you purchased it from did test it first, send it back. If they did not, you may want to contact either ASUS or SiS concerning the compatibility with this cpu before sending one or both back.

Just my thoughts, again it is a Wild Ass Guess.

I found the same problem with another AMD Athlon XP 1800 +, it was a brand spanken new board and couldnt get a responce out of it. I sent it back over three times and still nothing but finally i had enough and told them i wanted a differnet board and sure enough it worked. other than that make sure your jumpers are set properly. if you have them set on reset CMOS the cpu will not start.

Other than IKnowNot's comments (bloody good info.. ) my only other thought is the BIOS isn't booting because of a M/B protection (see Iknownots comments) OR.. a strange lockup of the BIOS.. have we tried a full BIOS reset?.. some times the antistatic wrap can cause problems.. and a removal of CMOS Bat.. a shortting of the CMOS Reset jumper.. and (on some mo/bo's) a holding of a key on powerup (a extra software reset/restart).. this will be mentioned in the Mobo manual..

i agree with jinxy, please try to remove the motherboard in its casing attach everything
then turn on... we have a lab with 45 units deployed by our supplier and 12 of them wont display just because the mobo was not properly grounded... or 2nd, try to check the heatsink at the cpu fan that it was properly attach to the processor.. btw, did you hear any beeps right after switching on the power?

I don't have another board to test the processor on, but I'll see if I can contact someone to find out if my CPU will work with that board. I thought it would work since it said that it has up to XP 2400 support.

Now the glitch with this company testing if for you is you have to buy the whole compuer system from them and then tell them you want them to put it together. They don't actually test the parts if your just ordering one M/B since their brand new.

When I get to my work place later today I'll try taking the board out to. and seeing if it will fire up.

btw: I built another computer which has the exact same specifications, but it worked fine for me.

I think I’m getting too much into the reasons and ignoring the cure. Sorry for any confusion.

If you can get it to start without the cpu, or with an older cpu check the bios revision of the board. That board DOES support that chip ( per ASUS ) but only with certain revisions.

welll thought i dont havent have any good experiance with AMD but to me it seems either BIOS ROM or Processor problem. reasons :

u said no activity...if everything regarding PS,cord and MoBo is OK , then the supply is in for the Processor to run, now the processor is supposed to start executing the BIOS ROM instructions.....but if nothing happens on this stage it means either the BIOS is not able to provide the required instructions or the Processor is unable to execute those or worst BOTH.

so try ur processor in someother board and may be that helps.

i can recall the days when testing a 486 processor on a MoBo i was struck on the asme problem and eventually i found the processor to be non-functional...and there wasnt any burn mark....

So i hope u will get ur BOX running up in a few days.

Just in case you guys were wondering, the short was with a screw behind the plug ins for the ram. If I screwed the screw in it wouldn't go, but If I leave the screw out it works fine.
