Forged E-mails
I have been aproached by an employee of the company I work for asking how she can block emails which an ex boyfriend of hers is sending her.
I was simply going to "block sender" or "create a rule" ( we use Outlook Express)
However it appears that he is telneting in to a Mail server and forging them that way.
I cant block sender beacause he uses a different "email from" address each time.
The employee has warned him not to send them but he keeps sending them.
She has asked me not to report the matter further and I would prefer to try and block them if I can.
It appers he is using a bt internet mail server, if all else fail i will report the matter to them with the relevent message ID's.
Can anyone give me any ideas how I could block them please?
Thanks!

What about a script that would block source IP? Even if he's sending the email from a SMTP relay, he's regular address should be coming through. I would report to to BT or, if that fails, submit BT to one of the SMTP relay blocker sites like http://www.mail-abuse.org/rbl/ . They will end up fixing their "broken" SMTP when they start receiving complaints from users.

Does his ip show up in the header?
-
yes it gives his ip the say apperently from *****@****.com
-
You could report his ip address to who ever runs the mail server. they should be able to tell what isp he is with and get him kicked off the net.
-
I could but the trouble is it isnt illegal what he is doing. bt let people telnet to their mail servers to send mail.
I suppose if she made a complaint about the emails to the relevent authorities something could be done but she dosent want to do that.

i would have thought that forging an email is illegal. maybe not telneting into a server but surley forging an email is!
-
No. aslong as it is to an single email address and you havent used a "span email" bit of software to compose it it is legal. As far as i am aware anyhow, i could be wrong tho!
-
well you learn something every day!
Could you set up he email client so i only receives emails from people in her address book?
-
I could but there are heaps of people who need to email her who arnt in her contact list, so she wouldnt get them either which wouldnt do any good really.
-
good point. Does he put anything in the subject line? you could make a rule to stop them getting through from that!
-
Sometimes he does and sometime he dosent. I cant make a rule from that tho cause if a proper email was sent about work etc that wouldnt get through! And i'd prob get the sack!!
-
LOL! Ive ran out of ideas for you, the only way will be to report him i think!
How do you forge an email any how?
-
you just telnet into a mail server. Type mail from: [email protected]
then type rcpt to: who ever you want to send it to
then data
type ur message
put a full stop on a line of its own
.
thats it the email will be sent.
Ridiculosly easy if you ask me, it should be changed/stopped IMHO.

nokia,
Ummm.. wouldn't his emails fall under harassment?? That would be a violation of bt's AUP I'm sure. I don't think they are really keen on anyone using their email in this manner. While she may not be thrilled at doing this, it may be her only alternative. She may need to consider more serious legal action if need be.

one what he is doing is illigal as it is unwanted continus emailing thus it is harrassment.
