egative Effect on Blood Sugar
Sugar regulation is also an issue in alcohol consumption. It hinders the liver’s ability to produce more sugar. Although, a temporary feeling of relief from low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) may be achieved due to the extra calories derived from drinking, the symptoms of hypoglycemia return even stronger after the effects wear off.
Now I am a hypoglycemic and I like a drink or 5 - am not a heavy drinker but will have a couple of beers when i finish work and I tend to drink wine by the bottle rather than the glass ;) but my blood sugar levels have never dipped near danger levels while drinking - i do however have major munchies the day after - lol

Binge drinking and/or excessive drinking is linked to hypertension (high blood pressure), high triglycerides, atherosclerosis, cancer, and stroke. Another condition associated with excessive long-term drinking is cardiomyopathy, or heart muscle disease.

Psychological Benefits
Those who drink alcohol on a moderate level claim to experience a feeling of physical and psychological well-being, relaxation, and stress reduction. Recent research indicates that the social interaction that is typically a part of moderate drinking, especially among the elderly, results in higher levels of activity and group participation, reduces depression and stress levels, and increases cognitive functioning. Heavy drinking, however, has the reverse effect both physically and psychologically.
It has also been proven that co-workers who go out for a couple of pints together after work function better in work....they get to build more of a raport between one and another and are then more likly to help each other at work - which in return would improve over-all productivity.
I highlighted the last part in bold as it shows that this is only the case when taken in moderation as other people have said

Positive Effect on Heart Disease
While alcohol consumption has many detrimental health effects, lower incidences of heart disease and blood clots are reported in moderate drinkers. Recent studies conducted in this area indicate a reduction of arterial plaque and protection from the formation of clots. Moderate drinking increases blood thinning properties and can even cause the break down of a blood clot.

Wine has been at the center of the controversy for quite some time. Some studies show that small amounts of wine decrease blood pressure in animal subjects. Other studies show that larger amounts of wine consumption cause hypertension and stress on the arteries. The key appears to be moderation.
theres that moderation word again ;)

Moderation: How Much Is Enough?
Moderation is thought to be an amount of drinking that does not cause a change in personality. Depending on the circle that one keeps, moderate drinking could be defined as having one or less drinks per day, and not needing to drink everyday.
IMHO moderation is not binge drinking - u can go out and have a couple of drinks with your friends and enjoy it - but you dont need to get wasted everytime u go out. Also if you can go out and enjoy yourself without drink - too many people i feel drink to feel more confident....to lose some of their inhabitions - you shouldn't need alcohol to be yourself!
ok other drugs will not go into as would end up writing way too much - but some info one psychadelic drugs can be found here -> http://slate.msn.com/id/2082647/
