20-year-old Pavel Vladislav was arrested in the Israeli town of Be'er Sheva. Authorities believe he is the porn site extortionist who operated under the name Deepsy.
He would demand cash from porn sites and then initiate DoS (denial-of-service) attacks against them if they failed to comply.

Was he ever successfull in getting any money? I read the article, I didnt see if he got any money......I not an expert in the LAW and I dont know how it works in that jurisdiction, but technically if he didnt get any money, then its only attempted fraud/extortion???
I don't know if he got any money- so it may be only attempted extortion (which is still against the law- at least here). However, it seems that whether he got money or not he did initiate denial-of-service attacks which successfully knocked the porn sites offline for a period of time so he broke the law there as well.
it's unbelievable how they call him a hacker... Pervert with an attitude is more like it heheh... NIce article though :)

Hi mate! that is the big problem with the net..............the laws are so different. Here, in England, it would be "demanding money with menaces" that would carry a maximum of 14 years............even if nothing changed hands. Not sure on Israeli law, but that is what will decide?, their law, not ours..........We also have a crime called "extortion" which gets about the same in prison terms, but is more related to blackmail type scams...............maybe it would come under that. Once again....no money required?
As for my porn sites...............If you me$$ with my update or technical $upport $ites ever again..............you won't even get to court (Uncle Bill) You guys should never have had more than 640k of RAM.............oh....I think that I said that once before :D

Either way I do beleive he should be punished for his actions. All I'm saying is with a good lawyer it would be difficult to make extortion charges stick if he didnt get any money (in American law anyway). Although a good prosecutor might could, He would have an edge in that he launched denial-of-service attacks to the sites that didnt cooperate. In other words he had full intention on getting the money and would have taken it, had it been given.
But everything I'm saying is probably irrelevant(bullshit) anyway because I'm sure the law over there is different. Its just the topics of technology/law/politics always intrest me and I love to speak my mind on them...... Going to eat now...peace

My position: I don't know.... I enjoy freedom of speech etc. But then there is a line, (kiddie porn etc.), that probably shouldn't be crossed..... But that is reliant on the culture in which I was raised...... Hard question when you take it worldwide/internetwide......

Like hell it shouldnt be crossed. children should not be submited to these acts, wether thay chose to be or not thay should not be. how would you like it if your children where involved in child porn?? you wouldnt. I no if my nece or nefues ever got involved in anything related to that I would kill the person whom got them involved with in it.

I also "really" like kiddie pornographers...........Sykes-Fairbairn killing knives, electrical soldering irons.....oxy-acetelene blow torches, and other stuff. Unfortunately, the law does NOT permit me my preferred hobby....at least not in "civilised countries"??

1: A sharp knife/scalpel

Pornographers are scum bags (imho). This guy is worse than a scum bag. Its not like he was coming down on porn he just wanted his cut. Its just a shame that the law must protect these morally depraved money grabbers to catch someone worse.

Since this is Israel we are talking about, I think Deepsy's fate will be similar to if he were in the United States and I'm sure the FBI will have its hand in the cookie jar. Israel has shown in the past its willingness to prosecute computer criminals in a manner similar to US law (Analyzer&Makaveli). Even if he didn't recieve money, I imagine now that he is in custody it shouldnt be too difficult to find a porn site who will say they handed him wads of cash, aside from extortion there are his DoS attacks as well.

I owe you all an apology, I should not have lost my cool last night. And particularly sorry to you Tony, as I seem to have screwed up your thread?
The only explanation that I can offer is that a friend of mine has a girlfriend who is a lawyer. She tends to handle Crown (State) prosecutions in the lower courts.
Courtesy of the FBI there were a couple of leads in this area, which mostly consist of farming communities. This means there is a bit of rivalry between law enforcement people, so I am asked to look for evidence on these computers and media, rather than get the "big city" types in?
The trouble with looking for evidence, is that when you find it, you actually see it..........I was physically sick, and felt very negative towards the people responsible.
I over-reacted, I guess if it were a court case, I would be considered to be in contempt?

Kiddie porn was just the first thing that came into my head when I typed a sentence that intended to make the point that the internet transcends varying cultures and what might be very bad in one culture may be quite acceptable in another, thus the "strength and weakness" part of my post. It was not support of KP in any way......
Nightfalls: Whether you like it or not KP exists because there is a market for it. No market = no KP. Your method of dealing with the offenders makes you a criminal too...... Learn to think, be devious and to hurt these people where they hurt most, which in a western society is usually in the wallet. Reduce them to living in the gutter and keep them there, where they belong, and they will suffer much more, especially if they were successful.... They get to think about how good it _used_ to be..... Physical pain has an end.... Mental pain continues forever..... ;)
Nihil: Don't worry old man...... We all get a little "warm" under the collar from time to time.... I would suggest you read my advice to Nightfalls though..... When I was young I would have reacted like you and her but the benefit of years has taught me that the knee jerk reaction, while quite satisfying, isn't quite as much fun as total degradation.... And there is no law against total degradation..... :D

Essentially, there are those in favor of porn- or at least their freedom to do what they want if they so choose, and those who are adamantly opposed to porn. Almost universally nobody supports child pornography and some other lunatic fringe forms of "expression" (aka fetishes).
People were in support of extorting or DoS'ing child porn sites, but the general consensus seemed to be that legitimate porn sites had just as much right to protection as any other business and that this person should be hunted down and brought to justice.
I don't think you'll find many (or any) people in support of child pornography, but TigerShark makes valid points. A) there are obviously more people than you would like to believe that ARE into child porn or it wouldn't still be such big business. The same is true for many fetishes. I can't get into bestiality personally and it disgusts me- but you will find no shortage of sites dedicated to the topic.
The double-edged sword here in the United States is that in order to protect MY right to free speech and free thought we have to protect everyone else's as well. If we allow the Christian Coalition...I mean Republican Party to choose who to censor and where to draw the line maybe I won't like where they draw it. Maybe the next regime will move the line even tighter until you have the government dictating what books you can read, what shows you can watch, what political ideology you can believe in. At that point we can all just move to Beijing.
B) Different laws and cultures transcend the Internet and make enforcing the laws of any one sovereign nation difficult. It is a problem that will continue for a long time to come on the Internet. Many laws are common around the world and can be enforced globally. But, the United States can't prosecute someone in Taiwan for breaking a U.S. law and they also will be hard-pressed to prevent U.S. citizens from viewing the "illegal" content on the Taiwanese web site unless they implement a national border firewall like China- which goes back to protecting the freedoms of the citizens and not letting the government censor and dictate what we can see / read / think.
I think that DoS attacks and extortion / blackmail are pretty much globally illegal and prosecuting "Deepsy" shouldn't be too difficult. Like someone else already mentione- Israel and the U.S. are pretty friendly and have legal systems that are similar enough that I am pretty confident this guy is screwed.
