Router Question.

Is there a way to change your routers ip? It's weird (to me), I know my ISP provides me with a dynamic ip, but my routers ip fails to change. Can anyone explain that? My "true" ip changes frequently, because every couple of weeks I disconnect my router and flush the dns and all that and I can see that it has changed. However, my routers ip stays the same even while my real ip address is changing.

I have heard some people say you can unplug your router and wait for your dns lease to expire and that will possibly change it. I tried that and it didn't work (if that’s even true). Any tips or tricks that I can try to force a change here, or is this not possible from my end?

Hi what sort of router are you using as how to do this will depend on your router

linksys befsx41.

Most home broadband routers can be set for a dynamnic IP. If you are on DSL, it should probably be set to use PPPoE, otherwise it should probably be on a simple dynamic address setting. Sounds like you have your router set to a static address. Did you RTFM? There might be something in there on that.

It has instructions for dynamic IP addressing. Look them up under "obtain an IP address automatically"

I do have it set on "obtain ip address automatically" (dhcp). I'm on cable.

Not from what I'm seeing. If I'm correct the linksys manual only shows you how to change the internal ip addresses. The 192.168.x.x's

Its in chapter 8 configure the router it tells you to connect to the router via the web browser im looking at it right now.

I'm sorry cytex, but I don't know what you're seeing. I don't see anywhere where it shows users how to change the external ip address of my linksys.

I have already stated in this thread that I have my router set on the appropriate setting of "obtain ip address automatically (dhcp)"

Unless you can switch it over to static and guess an empty number owned by my ip, but I don't think that would work or be legal would it? :confused:

I think if you go to run and type in "winipcfg" or "ipconfig" there are release all and renew all buttons. Those should do the trick.

if your router is set on dhcp as according to the manual 1st reset it then try to connect if this fails try to telnet to your router internal address and ping a computer on the internet eg ping www.ireland.com if this works then your comps aint set up right make sure they are set so that the defaullt gateway is the routers internal ip check network cables etc if you cant get a ping then then check cables for the router the only other thing i can think of at this point is to email their support at [email protected] <[email protected]>

Yeah, I did that too, no changes.

The link you gave me cytex was for the setup of three other types of linksys routers, not the befsx41. I don't think it matters too terribly much though.

Ya i know the model number you gave me werent on their website so i figured they would be pretty much the same as they look like to be in the same series can you ping out from the router is the link light on the router on

Yes, the link light is steady.

and can you ping out from the router itself you should be either able to telnet to it or their should be an option in the webpage of the router

umm...Another thing you could try is tryping in your ip adress into your browers. Some routes give you the ability to edit thier options that way.

Yes, that is the way you do it on this model. You enter 192.168.x.x and then your password and then you can edit the options. From there you can only change your internal ip though, unless you have a static ip then you can enter it in manually... even then you 'should' be limited to the ip your isp provided you.

you are stuck with a 192.168.x.x address, eve nafter upgrading the firmware, i still was stuck with the same sort of ip.

Ok... here's what i'm getting from this



Cable Modem- Assigned DHCP Address- Router -Private Addresses- Network.

Because you are on DHCP, you want your router's IP Address to change frequently? When you are on cable, you are constantly connected. So as long as the router is powered up, it's holding onto the IP it was assigned. If you reboot the router or release/renew the IP you would assume you would get a new IP because of the DHCP, however with most cable companies that i've dealt with, the dynamic IP is more like a static IP. In 3 years of cable (I have DSL now) I had 4 IPs. I had 1 in one town, then I moved and got another, Moved again got another, moved again and got another. I never had a different IP when at the same place. Most Cable Companies will hold your IP for a very long time.

I see. I was just having a little trouble there figuring out why my "true" ip was changing so rapidly and not my routers. I should note though, my routers ip has changed before. It did take a long time though, like a span of months not weeks as with the other.

HTregz got it exactly right. I myself use cable and the IP doesnt change for long periods of time. even though i have set it to use dhcp. this is cos as long as you are connected the ip remains the same, its only when you disconnect and connect again that it changes. this also depends on the how long you disconnect. if its not long enough, you will get assigned the same ip again by the dhcp.

I could go on with a more detailed explanation of this but it will take too long. if you want more details, pm me and I'll send some documentation over to you to read thru. Or you could jus google about dhcp servers and read up on how it works.

My 2 cents worth. Cable IP addresses seem to hold for months & months (even if you renew/release from within the Linksys firewall [Status tab])

Typing IPconfig -renew/release on the PC will only reset the internal (NAT) ip address of the computer; it doesn't change the WAN IP

You can change the Linksys Firewall to any IP address you wish. (10.0.0.1 eg)
If you upgrade firmware, it resets the router to factory default....then you have to go back and re-configure everything.
