Microsoft did it, and announce they are going to charge for chat.

I do not know why they would charge for this service when there is IRC and other chats out there, and they claim:

I'm sure the only way you can pay is by credit card, meaning you have to disclose your address to microsoft.
This greatly eases the ability to find a spamer, also an address on record could be tracked preventing sign-ups to the same address.
Although their's still ways arround this, it's harder than before.

hehe monny is power for the narow minded or so im told. besidses there are ways around paying for a chat hehe i say DOWN WITh MSN!!! hehe but if youy have there servis all ready thay cant do ****?or can thay what thay have not let out is thay will even block you frome your messenger if you have one soo keep an eye open:)

People will pay for MSN because that is all they have used and they don't want to have to go through the troubles of having to create a new ID on a different system where all their friends may not be.
That's a good point. I was hanging out in the general chat areas and people were saying "What do I do? What do I do?" and when I pointed out there is IRC that will prolly never go away and will prolly always be free and they all can make a channel and hang out there. The response? "What's IRC?"Quote:

I heard that they were mainly doing it because of all the spam on msn chat and the pedophiles that like to hang out there. I thought msn chat sucked ass anyway........
msn chat does suck...

Lv4: I See your point. AOL is horrible. But still I dont see MSN as that good of a chat proggie. There are still other options people may switch to, AIM, ICQ, Yahoo...any of those. Maybe MSN wont lose everyone but they will sure as hell lose alot. Serves them right though. Im sick of thier money hungry tactics

Oh well. A lot of people will stop using MSN and they will not make as much money as predicted. The countries that use MSN a lot is mostly Europe, China, and maybe India/Pakistan. They will get pissed and will make MS wish they had not charged, or simply switch to another service. I never used it a lot because many people use AIM :(, so I am more or less forced into finding a client that includes AIM, hence the use of GAIM!
I do like MSN Messenger, though I am looking into getting AIM.. I'm rather partial to MSN though....
I can honestly say that am I not the least bit suprised by this. It all comes down to the almighty dollar. Ah well, I stand by IRC as my single chat solution. I hope that the MSN users can let go of their emoticons and snazzy profiles with pics and see the value of IRC. I mean cmon its F-R-E-E.
IRC always has that chance of bad stuff happeing to the user also, and to someone new its pretty complicated. I quit IRC a long time ago..
i used it for a while then our fire wall startes to have trogen attacks to it, so i stoped using it and we havnt had one since...

Yea I just don't trust IRC. It gives it's users too much freedom in what they can do to other users.
This was to be expected. M$ charging for their software is not surprising. Once they announced that they were closing down the chat rooms bcos of paedophiles you knew they were gonna start charging with the excuse that it will keep out spammers and paedophiles. It might work cos some anonyminity is lost but then there are ways around this. sure there might be people who switch to other chat places. But if 1 out of every 100 stay with them, thats a helluva lot more $ than they got befoe when they werent charging anything.
with M$, its always been about $ and it doesnt surrpise me that this has finallly happened.

If you want to stip people spending their hard earned money on stuff they could have gotten for free if they tried a little harder, start farming your own crop, start baking your own bread buddy, start breeding and killing the cows you eat..
If people want to spend their time exploring the free ways to do stuff, that's good.. They learn..
Some people don't want to learn.. they want to be lead by the hand..
