Networked Cpu's
Ok...i just finish networking 2 of my computers. one is running a cable modem and a fire wall....the other one is sharing the internet connection. Is it sharing the fire wall too?...if not .. do i need o get one up? or will the host CPU cover both of them?
Thanx for ANY help

Is the topology like this:
Cable Modem ------------ PC Firewall ------------- Second PC
Which is good, but might require 2 Network Cards in the PC Firewall.
Or is it like this
PC Firewall --------------- Cable Modem ------------- Second PC
This offers no protection to your second PC!

You don't necessarily need a second firewall.
Put 2 Network cards in the PC with the firewall and connect the Cable Modem to 1 and the 'internal' network to the other?
Is your firewall software ? I assume so.
If you search google for something like 'using [insert your OS here] as a firewall and router' you should get some good tips.
If you don't, let me know what OS you are using and I'll see if I can dig something up.

ideally you would want something like this.
cable from wall ----> cable modem ---> pc 1 w/firewall (nic 0) ---> pc 1 w/firewall (nic 1) ----> hub/switch ----> pc 2
you could put a firewall on pc2 if you wanted, all depends on what you are attempting to do in regards to security. if you just want a simple network, this setup should work fine for you.

you misunderstood the topic....the CPUs are already succesfully networked. I just need to know about the security
And yes ... the firewall is software...im runnin Windows 2ooo pro on both
oops...steve misunderstood

I'm not sure what's been misunderstood here. I understand that the PC are currently networked.
Can you describe/draw how they are connected to eachother and the cable modem
I would still advise you go for the 2 network cards and 1 firewall topology since:
You can add new equipment to your network and it will be protected without having to add another firewall.
You only have 1 machine & firewall that is exposed directly to the internet and so reduces your risk
You only have 1 peice of firewall software to keep correctly configured and up to date.

OK...its like this...[] < PC one..[_] < Cable modem..they are connected...{}< Lan Hub/port They are connected..finally (in another room) []< pc two....They are all fuly networked...oh..and the fire wall is in there somewhere
-
Is the cable modem attached to the PC via a network cable or via something like USB?
Like This?
Cable Modem ===USB=== PC with Firewall ----Network---- Hub ----Network--- PC 2

yes yes...much easyer explayned than mine...

Unless someone wants to correct me - I think you are fine as you are.

Looking back after some breakfast and lots of coke and coffe, I dunno WTF I posted... :(

ok...thanx....if my points did any good...id give you both Greens..but im below 50 points...oh well.
Thnx again

One thing you could always do , is buy a $50 linksys router have that hooked to your cable modem then have your PC's hooked to the router. That way, none of you PC's actually have an public IP on the net. I spent an extra $20 and bought a firewalled router which does a great job. I never get any alerts or anything anymore.

Ill try one..if not all of those ideas...specialist..you said suting about the firewall..i think....but it was helpfull....you all get imaginary green AOpoints
can i delete the thread?

Yea if your topology is like the ones described above you should be ok..
Here is my topology..
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
Cable Modem > NE 4 port router running NAT > 192.168.1.100 > 192.168.1.101
the 192.168.*.* machines being my private machines...
