Can you get into the startup menu?
Do you meen the start up menu when it asked you if you want to go into safemode?
Could be a ton of things but it is hard to tell given the lack of background info you've given. Might be hardware, but probably is software related. Try to boot into safe mode and use system restore to go back to the day of your last good boot, Another option would to be to try and boot from the CD and then use the recovery console to repair XP. If neither of these work then the problem is likely to be hardware related.
How can i do a system restore without being able to get to the desktop
If you can't boot into safe mode then try booting from the Windows CD.
when you turn On your computer press F8 untill a black screen display with start up option on it. ex:Quote:
to boot into safe mode and use system restore to go back to the day of your last good boot,
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Safe Mode with Networking
Last known good configuration
......etc.
try what allen suggested with the restore (when you are in safe mode) if that doesnt work try ladt good know configuration.
we can't get into safe mode. or last known working configuration or anything else. no matter what we chose it will always keep restarting. is there a way to do a system restor from like a floppy or something.
BOOT FROM CD!!!!
(that makes 3 times...I ain't typing it no more....nope nope nope)
we dont have the windows cd. the OS was burnt on to the HD
Then take it back to the place you bought it and tell THEM to fix it for you...then cuss their asses out for selling you a system without an OS CD.
Jeez...you didn't even get a "system restore" CD??? Based on your computer buying habits, I think I have a bridge or some oceanfront property I'd like to sell you....I'll make you a KILLER deal on it, I promise.
About all you can do now is use the computer you're on now and go download an illegal copy of winXP pro and burn it to CD to install on the other box...PROVIDED your hardware isn't screwed.
Are you SURE you can't hit the f8 key and boot into safe mode?

Or was it bought used, with no Cd
There are a couple things you can do. Do you have a windows 98 boot disk. Or, you can just hit F8 i believe and go into setup and boot into safemode. If you don't care about the system or the files on it you mine as well get a copy of whatever OS you want load it on (keep the cd). But, I am unable to tell you what to do with the information you provided.

Would reinstalling windows reformat my HD.
yes.
Whatever partition you want windows to install on, it will format it.
The computer my company bought for my office has XP installed, and NO restore cd with it..the reason I was given was to cut down on piracy. If I want one, I have to request one from Microsoft....andI have went round and round with my IT about it.... they still haven't got one for me...
Sorry chey, but you're wrong on that point. You will have the option to format but you don't have to take it. Windows will install over itself, but you have to make it. It will try to intall to C:WINDOWS000 or somesuch...you have to specify that it intall to C:WINDOWS by changing the fiilename it tells you it is going to install to.Quote:
