I don't think that anyone will take legal action on the issue, but you can contact the service provider of the web site and complain. Depending on the company they may contact the site owner and tell them to remove it.
It depends on where they got the picture, if you did an online personals ad, then rights to the picture would have been transferred over to the personals site. They could've given the picture to anyone they wanted. If someone just randomly takes a pictureof you and posts it to the internet, that's illegal, if you upload a picture, chances are you signed away all rights to it.

Basically it would depend on copyright laws in the particular country, and any reciprocal agreements they had with the country in which it was published. Within the same country, then local copyright laws will hold good.
It is really no different from publishing an image in a book, magazine or newspaper. if you can prove that it is your intellectual copyright, then they have to remove it. Because the internet is pretty free at the moment, removal is probably about the best that you could hope for. I doubt if you could claim much above your legal costs, if that. This is because they can actually remove it..........if I have printed an distributed 5million newspapers, then obviously, I cannot.
A lot of ISPs can see what is coming and do not want to upset important corporate clients, or potential clients. They may well suspend their service to the infringing party if you complain BUT be sure that you can prove it, or you may end up on the wrong end of a lawsuit yourself :(
If it is your personal photograph, taken in a public place, then I would probably get away with it in the UK.............unless, of course, I added your name, address, car registration and a price :D
Otherwise, local privacy protection laws would apply.

yeah well here in the US my mom had a friend who had her picture posted on a website as the "hottest woman of the week" picture. the woman, who i have never met altough i am eager to throw in my opinion, contacted the webmaster and they were forced to remove her picture from there site. Also, you cant go around ripping pictures off of other sites and then putting them on your own. I think people have tried to do that with porn and they get busted all the time and have to take their website down. Anyways, if you picture has been posted somewhere where you dont want people to see it, just tell the webmaster and they will most likely take it down in order to avoid charges or bad stuff...
usually charges won't be pressed unless its a famous logo and someone from that company or whatever happens to notice it being used without thier consent. it all depends on the circumstances

No. It would only be illegal if they took a picture of you in a place where you have an expectation of privacy. If you are walking down the street and someone takes your picture, and then puts it on the web, you had no expectations of privacy out on the street. So it is perfectly legal. Now if you are in your bathroom and somebody sticks a camera in the window and gets a picture of you, that would be illegal as you have an expectation of privacy in your bathroom.Quote:

A perfect example of this is the papparazzi. They take lots of pictures of people out in the streets or in public places, and it is perfectly legal.

It seems that US and UK laws are pretty similar about that one. It is the public place/expectation of privacy that matters. if I was not legal, you wouldn't be able to take many holiday pictures for fear of being sued.
A peculiarity of English law that I forgot to mention, is that it is illegal to take a picture of a judge in a public place whilst the Court is in sessions.

CXGJarrod - Those arn't really images though.
However, we at Unerror had an image stolen from us. And it was protected by copyright, (See Benrne convension, it states that the image would be copyright upon creation by the person who created it). But if you have no proof that you acctually made it, then the copyright is pretty much void.
Christina (GreekGoddess) created a tutorial on protecting images on websites, but, I don't know the address ast this moment, a quick search of the forums will no doubt find you what you are looking for.
I do know that Canada and United States go by the Berne convension, but, I don't know about the other countries, it is most likely true that it does, but I suggest you look into it.
And, there are was to prove you made it first, watermarks, there are some companies that will let you upload and prove that you it is yours to copyright for a low price, again, I am sorry I don't know the address, but again a quick search of Google will tell you!

If anyone is worried about using graphics on their website or anywhere else, royalty free stock photography is the way to go. They are better than any graphic you pull off any site, and they are free! Just google for them, I posted this somewhere else as well-

Ive dealt with this a couple times. Regardless of wether putting the picture of someone else is legal or not. If you contact the webmaster of the site or whoever owns the servers and raise enough of an uproar. 90% of the time they will take it down. However if its on those friendship meeting places that you see everywhere and you try and contact the person who posted their pictures pretending to be whoever else. They will swear up and down the pictures are of themselves. Its happened to my g/f before and it can be a pain in the ass to take care of.
