Spend some time at this site, it has a ton of great info: http://www.firewall.cx/firewall.php
Do i have to...ide rather not..ide like some one to explain it so i can under stand it...
no offence..
i just learn better that way
It *may* be my imagination, but I'm guessing you’re up for some trolling today? Am I wrong?
Come on man, no one is going to spoon-feed you this stuff. That site has wonderful info, and it is fairly easy for most to comprehend.
trolling?,,,,,huh?
ok...ill give the site a try,,,
Thnx
I didn't mean to offend, I'm just saying that I can't really explain it any better than the link I provided you. :D
I've just had a look and it seems pretty straight forward to me. Why don't you just have a look at it and then come back and ask any questions that you still have. There's no excuse for lazyness, I mean he posted you a link for gods sake, the least you can do is read it.
Framework is correct.
Someone already *has* explained it. Instead of explaining it in a personal thread to you, they have explained it in the link that Frame listed for you.
If you read it in multiple threads here, or in the one link listed, it will still involve the same thing -- reading.
No offense intended at all, but the information has already been nicely laid out.
Click the link and the information is yours.
That will allow you to ask specific detail-type questions *here* then if you have any.

oh..another thing...i have 2 CPUs networked...properly mind you...and ive gt the Antivirus crap on one...and a firewall..will that fire wall protect the 2nd CPU also?..or do i have to set up a new one?
Any insight is wecome (as always)
and you didnt offend...
If the firewall is host based (like ZoneAlarm or Norton's) then no. If one machine gets internet through the other and the firewall is "networked based" then yes.
And to put the understanding of firewalls in the simplest of forms: they are hardware/software-based rules that determine whether packets are allowed in or not. Think of them like a police officer that directs traffic and says all red cars are not allowed forward (red cars are evil things).
But you should go through the tutorials that are here, check existing threads through the nifty search function and read the FAQ. It's not being said to annoy you but to help you down the road. :D
now now..be niceQuote:

wow...thanx mittens..so it will work?..im runnen a DSL on one .. and the other one is running off of that...so im protected?
You're using ICS? Might but I wouldn't trust it. By habit I'd put AV and firewall on both. Host based firewalls are not fancy. They do the job simply, IMHO. It can't hurt and would certainly help.
Can i put the same fire wall on both?...or is a serial number gunna bite my arse?
Check your AUP/License for that. You could always download ZoneAlarm or another free firewall product for the 2nd one.
Many DSL modems have some firewal functionality in them.
I currently use the 2 wire Homeportal. The most recent software update for it included some nice firewall ability.
In that case, the DSL modem/firewall would protect anything behind it. This will depend of course on how secure you want to be.
As was pointed out, if you have a personal firewall on one computer, and the other computer does NOT pass through the first to access the net, then only the box WITH the firewall on it will be protected.
Assuming both computers plug directly into your DSL modem, using the DSL firewall software (if available) would be a great choice for basic protection of both machines.

I've closed this thread until AllYourBase either changes his signature script or the admins change it for him. I'm also moving the thread because of the effect it can have on browsers.
edit: sig issue fixed. Post moved back.
what was rong with it mittens?
h3r3tic, what's the link for?
AllYourBase, your signature went out of the bounds of the thread and made it difficult to see the thread. This problem has been fixed by the administrator.
ohh...im teribbly sorry..ill try not to do that any more..ok?
