Speaking with a colleague, she tells me there is one with the Win2K Reskit. You can specify the combination type you want -- upper case, lower case, number, special character -- and min character length.
Perhaps someone here with the kit might have the full name of the app.
I check the list of resource tools and what the do and I didn't see anything that stands out as such.
I have to agree with Info Tech Geek. I searched through my 2k resource kit and found nothing related to a pword generator.
This link seems to have a pretty good pword generator that works with all versions of windows. Check it out.

I though I saw one at one time too... but I don't use it, so I can't find it.
There are plenty of free ones though... You can even get them for your handhelds for generating random passwords on the go!

But... I could have swore that there is one in the win2k res kit...

Thanx for the responses, but the item I am trying to find is the one built into Win2K or part of the Resource Kit. There is one and I really need to find it for a security project I am working on. Any help is greatly appreciated. IT IS OUT THERE... CAN YOU HELP ME FIND IT?
hmmm...not a generator, but a method to reset the p/w that works with ME/2000/XP....

Windows XP's Forgotten Password Wizard helps create a Password Reset Disk that you can use to gain access to your computer if you forget your password.
There are different steps, depending on your computer's connection to the network and the type of account you have. For example, follow these steps if your computer is on a workgroup and you have an administrator
account:
1. Open Control Panel and the User Accounts tool.
2. Click your account.
3. Within Related Tasks, select Prevent A Forgotten Password.
4. Follow the instructions provided by the wizard.
If you have a limited account, simply skip step 2 in the instructions above.
If your computer is on a domain, perform these steps:
1. Log off.
2. Press [Ctrl][Alt][Delete].
3. Click Change Password.
4. Select the local computer in the Change Password dialog box.
5. Click Backup.
6. Follow the instructions provided by the wizard.
When you log in to this computer that's on a domain and receive a Logon Failed error message, just click the Reset button to launch the Password Reset Wizard. If this computer is on a workgroup, you'll see the message Did You Forget Your Password? Click Use Your Password Reset Disk to launch the Password Reset Wizard.
Keep in mind that the Password Reset Disk only works on the computer on which it was created. In addition, within a domain environment, the Password Reset Disk will only allow you to gain access to the local computer. You'll still have to ask your domain administrator to change your domain password in order to regain access to the network
I apologize for the tasteless post I put up on this thread couple posts back. I just thought it was comical how the Google search found porn listings with password generator in it and wanted to share the humor (twisted at the time I guess). If you see my other posts you'll see I DO contribute strictly security & network info rather than this stuff.
Sorry if I offended....on with the discovery of a password generator.
BTW: I coded a real basic one in Perl to do real strong and random passwords to be used for service accounts. It's functional but limited and basic.
I don't want to fill this thread with chit chat. I have asked one question. Does anyone know of the Win2K Password Generator software. It is either built into the OS or in the resource kit. It is out there. I just need to know the NAME of it or how I can access it. PLEASE NO MORE ALTERNATIVE SUGGESTIONS.. I know what I am looking for. I don't need another option.
NOTHING?
InfoTech,
I have search through the Resource Kits. I haven't found any reference to a password generator tool. It may be a myth created out of a misunderstanding. You are welcomed to check the kits themselves here and perhaps if you find it, you can let the rest of us know.
But from what I can tell, there is nothing. The closest thing is a tool that puts requirements on passwords (mixed case, etc.) that was in the NT Resource Kit.
what was the name of that file?
If you need to RESET a password in 2000, the only tool you need is the NT Password & Registry Boot disk. This disk has saved my (ask me about it) many times. This tool is the main reason you should disable booting from a floppy and assign a BIOS password on your secure systems.Quote:

Remember: Anything you can run by booting off a floppy can be programmed into a bootable CD. So, ensure booting from alternative devices are disabled and the BIOS is locked. Unlocking the BIOS is a small price to pay for security.
Hey,
Tried finding something on the net talking about the toolkits and password generators, and the only thing I could find was this link (which has nothing to do about the kits, except that the sites name is it) Even at M$.com I could not find anything about it....

Maybe it was all just a myth?
cusrmgr.exe from the Resource Kit.
From cusrmgr.exe help:
Resetting Password Function
-p Set to a random password
Could this be it?
That might be the closest utility, although I don't know if I would call it a password generator.
hmm, thats odd-- i was just in the windows2000 Deep Registry on... hmm-- friday i believe, looking for something, took me hours and i found nothing of a pwgen..??? Where is it- i would like to take a look at that, if theres something in your computer you dont understand, its best not to leave it alone... ya know what i mean? Cant trust ole Bill gates .. he's prolly a cyborg 0_o
Ric that sig is FUNNY. Not related to this thread but I too come up empty on the passgen. You would think that an admin would welcome such an easy tool to administer things but alas it's missing. I have a basic VB one as well. I call it from a spreadsheet that populates the password and later I manually encrypt it and store it on a hidden machine.
I know that I used to have a Windows XP 8-in-1 CD. On this CD, you could install Pro:Multiple Licence, OEM, Table, and Multimedia (and same with Home). In order to install the multiple Licence one, the CD came with a tool that created and validated XP CD-keys. I'm sure if there was such a thing for XP, there was for 2000 - you just may be looking under the wrong name. I forget the exact name for the term used to describe a multiple install license, but that is what I believe you are looking for...
Sorry I can't be more specific.
so is not a legit copy then?Quote:

Interesting.
I did not even know this thread existed when I posted my thread called "Password Generator " yesterday. I just happened across an online password generator and thought it was sort of cool.
I don't know if someone else on this thread has mentioned it already, but you can check out the Sprex Password Generator .

To answer your question...the reason why the're's no name for it...its because it doesnt exist. I've searched in many places and haven't gotten any information. You could have read it wrong or the place where u read/heard might be missinformed.
Hope those links help you in any way.
No - the one I had was legit - the generator allowed you to install on multiple machines without having to have a giant booklet of CD-keys. It's mainly used for businesses.Quote:
Anyone have any more information on this product? Price for single user, how it is implemented?Quote:
