zonealarm sucks
Ok have just tried the free version of zonealarm and have never had as many problems with a piece of software before!!
first of all as soon as instalation finished - it crashed computer
then i rebooted - but because was set to run on start-up computer crashed as soon as loaded
went in under safemode - uninstalled zonealarm and rebooted again
this time computer booted fine so went to go online - adsl established computer but every time i tried to use a browser etc couldn't get through
though maybe drivers for modem got buggered uninstalled & reinstalled them - nope no dice
it appears even tho i had uninstalled zonealarm it was still blocking all ports (as hadn't been configured before crashed)
so had to reinstall zonealarm
then go in under safe-mode so i could run it without it freezing computer
turned off all protection - uninstalled zonealarm - rebooted and now running fine
such a ****ing handling
anyone else had problems with it??
/me goes back to outpost

I had the same problem when I tried it a year or so ago. Installed it, crashed all the time, unintalled it, still crashed all the time. A component of it stays even after you uninstall it, and that is what causes continuing problems after you think it's gone, or so I've read. I forget the name of the file off hand. Apparently there was a version that really did not get along with XP. I've heard that the newest version doesn't conflict anymore, but I'm also into Outpost now.
-
Yep, same problems...when it worked, it worked great...then one day..POOF! I know on one xp system I was using, ZA stopped playing nice after some critical update or other...
On the second xp box, one day it just started fuxoring up...never did figure out why (not that I spent alot of time on it)..
I have a WinMe box that it's been working on just fine. I never read anywhere that some versions don't get along with XP, but that's been my observations. I'm assuming since this is a new thread that you tried installing a recent version?
Was XP's firewall also on by any chance?
-
I run XP home and had the free version of zone alarm running for over 6 months and never had a bit of problems with it. Have that new CA EzArmor now, and it looks like a early version of Zone Alarm Pro, and it appears to be working fine.
-
well am running 98se - so is not an XP prob ;)
but i thik i won't be installing that firewall ever again
outpost does everything zonealarm can do and more - and i have never had a problem with it - tried the pro trial and worked like a dream - am using the free version atm...not quite as good but still easy to use and no probs - think am going to buy pro tho

i had problems too, on windows 98 SE, so i switched to Tiny Personal Firewall, and worked fine. i like it better than ZoneAlarm. it's small, fast, and secure. try it out vanhallen, i'm not sure if it's still available, if not pm me and i mail u the exe file. see u around!

I have never had any problem with ZA on XP or 2K. I think it works very well and does a good job.
-Cheers-
-
I'm not using ZA at the moment and I must admit I never used the free version on my boxes but I never had a problem with ZAPro on XP... the g/f has been running the free version on win98SE for the last 6-7months and she's not had a problem.
Maybe Mars was in trine with Saturn and conjuncting with Pluto when you installed it - it's all witchcraft anyway... oh... hang on I know what happend val... you remember that period of hightened solar activity we had recently.... :)
Z
PS seriously... some of my friends use ZA too and I don't think they have had any problems... but then again I've never been able to get ICS working on any windows computer and I'm told it does work - I guess some software just doesn't work on a particular system for some very weird reason. If it ain't doing its job then use something that you trust more....
-
Always had problems with a certain ZoneAlarm version (don't recall the correct one) and Win2K service pack 1, because of those problems I switched to sygate. Don't know about recent service packs or ZoneAlarm patches.
-
Ummm i use zonealarm and never had a problem once i got it configured properly. I was wondering why u felt like you needed to say the f word in you question, kinda pointless...
-
Hi Val,
I have had ZA running 0n all of 98/98se/Me/2K/XP without problems.
One 98se box was a problem as it does not get on with McAfee 7 and one Me box would run it fine, but it always crashed on shutdown
Did you have your AV running when you did the install? remember that just killing AV from the system tray icon does not always terminate running programs.
Cheers
-
nihil nope no other progs running that could cause a conflict it just didn't like my sytem
::
::::
as for my usew of the F word - the problems caused by zonealarm even after the uninstall made me think was a prob with my modem so was checking connections behind computer - do you know how many wires there are behind there oO
plus all the other hassle so was a lil peeved to say the least - plus with it frequency of use and the fact it is now being included in many dictionaries the F word seems to be falling in severity - any kid over the age of 5 living in the majority of english speaking countries will have already been exposed to this word - and as you have to be 13yrs or over to join Antionline (it is illegal for companies to record details from children younger than this age...such as the signup form on AO) i dont feel am exposing anyone to anything they havn't heard or seen before

hahaha i was just givin u a hard time man, but i feel u about the cables and stuff sometimes it get overwhelming. i recommend taking it to the tallest building and throwing it off.
-
im running win 98se too and i never had any problems with zone alarm - it has always run perfectly and performed well - no problems at all.
-
Yes Val, It is an odd one. This is the machine I had the shudown crashes with, yet if I manually closed ZA and then shut down, it worked fine. The Win98se box problem could be avoided by removing ZA from the boot sequence and starting it manually, then it and McAfee got on just fine (in all fairness McAfee spotted that Zone Alarm was there on installation, and warned me there would be problems...they just did not say how to get round it :) )
I have an old Digital PI/133 that will not load Win98, yet will load 98se quite happily, and the same is true of the other 200 or so that the Company bought at the same time. That has to be some sort of hardware/BIOS problem as they gave them to us without an OS on them.
As for your linguistic proclivities: For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge is an acronym describing activities proscribed in the Old Testament. If the word was good enough for the Puritans of New England, it should also be for AO?
The real word is "swive"............my apologies to those sensitive types with a knowledge of Middle Saxon (c700 A.D.) :D
Cheers
-
sound like a version versus distro prob check your version also zonealarm loves ram
-
I had a problem like that back in the days of 98. Now i got a newer version 4.5 i think running it works without a problem.
-
ZA bocking everything even after being uninstalled is a long standing problem that I don't think has ever been fully fixed. There use to be a tool to clean up after ZA but last time I was at the zone labs site I was unable to find it. A quick way to spot this problem is to ping -t [comp ip] and reboot it, you will see about 10-15 pings get through while booting before the ghost of zone alarm kicks in and starts blocking.
-
ZG= Zone Alarm Ghost.
PC=Personal Computer
ZA = Zone alarm
==========================
PC: Oh no hackers!
ZA: Dont worry, I got it.
PC: thanks

Yes great one. I like this kind of dialogs.
-
I've been saying that from the get go about ZA but not just because of it *****ing up your system but because even if it does install correctly it gives you absolutely no protection from someone who knows a minimum about software firewalls.
ZA is a resource pig and at best it's swiss cheese. And the worst part about it is that the company won't admit and even better they won't fix it.
Use outpost or even sygate. I hear disconnecting a ZA protected machine is the only truly safe way of computing with it.
-
What do u think about NIS 2003??? I think it's very good. It has the same almost system of defence like ZA.
-
 very nice way to say, DUMP THE ****ING WINDOWS AND MOVE TO SWEET DEVIL.
-
i used zonealarm (the free one) and later za pro on a 98se pc and had no problems with either one. haven't tried it on xp yet. i quit using it cause it is kind of a resource hog.
-
Ya damn right it sucks, but you forgot one thing val_fallen. You suck too!
Where is my shoe!
-
hey be nice. Ive used za for a long time and nvr had a problem. I think its an individual basis depending on config and setup.
-
Damn that my boy!
go here:
www.sygate.com <---- sygate
www.agnitum.com <---- outpost
Do what the elders have taught you and switch at once!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Ive also heard that blackice is good but ive never tried it.
-
No (just an opinion after much reading) don't use blackice... it sucks! I like Sygate the best, even over outpost.
Outpost can be buggy at times.
-
I'll try Syngate when I can download it. I am not bashing the other FW's, but I think ZA works very well if used as intended. If you have no idea what you are doing, it is pretty useless. As for it taking up memory, I suppose it does, but Windows and M$ apps in general eat lots of memory so that is not exactly any worse than any other M$ stuff you could be using.
-Cheers-
-
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Sygate is very easy to use, plus you can throw stuff like this into the rule sets:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/tim.leonard1/pg_sygate.htm
-
????. I know that there is sth between u 2 but 000000 u can PM him not say it publicly. It would be better.
-
Don't be such a suck-ass G-binary! :1oink1:
Kissing ass gets you no-where!
-
I never had a problem with it. All I did was update as often as possible and that helped for me. I run on a windows 2000 Pro. unfortunetly my computer picked up a virus and crashed. My dad got really ticked because our computer has crashed at least 8 times before, so he went off the wall and now we have 3 virus scanners and a firewall. Talk about memory consumption (also a strong defense).
-
ZA sucks alot of memory :o
-
Yeah, but i think it's a great program.
-
We all say it takes up too much memory but the reality is more recent programs will take up more memory, so we have to upgrade to like 1-2GB SD-RAM.You'll see in the future we'll have enough memory to run lik 2 games, photoshop and MacroMedia Dreamweaver at the same time and switch from to another instantly.
-
That's a nice dream ;P.
Btw a friend of mine has an AMD 2800+ and DDR400 256 MB chipset nforce2 and while he's waiting for 5 sec at most to turn on the monitor the PC has already boot WinXP and w8 for password. When i saw it i was amazed by AMD. BUT here is the wired part. When he goes throught the Start Menu to Control Panel. He is expanding to see the icons. I timed it and i found that to show up all the icons(default ones) it takes 5.12 secs a bit more than loading the XP.
But then i remember M$. ;P;P;P;P
-
Talking about ZA Pro they do have misc. service like ADs blocking capability, but i've some problems with that whenever going to vbb forums it will not load the profile link. Secondly, using ZA Pro when the icons on the desktop appeared you have to wait for the ZA icon for the taskbar to appear.
Some old news about firewall monitoring outbound traffic:
http://keir.net/firehole.html
http://news.com.com/2100-1001-275659.html
Nowadays firewall also came in with web ads blocking abilities like ZA, Outpost, NIS, Kerio. :p
