Today on fox news there was a story reporting that the U.N. wants "control of the internet" to be placed in their hands instead of the US's, or something along that line. I personally think that the internet is fine where it is right now; that there isn't any need for some foreign bureaucrats to mess things up. Of course, this is coming from an American, one of the dictators of the web :D If anyone feels like weighing in, please do.

Nice article. I think ICANN has done a decent job in regulating domains on the net. (US based opinion) They got Verisign to take down the sitefinder service at least.
Think the web is one place i can feel much more secure than in the world with dictators
Thanks. And I agree, ICANN has done their job quite well over the years. Anyone from anywhere can put content on the web, all ICANN does is let people get there. That system seems to have been working; when I type antionline.com in my browser, I usually end up here :) Why anyone would want to screw that up is beyond me.Quote:

ICANN is a rather ugly mess, d oa search on theregister for recent ICANN stories they where (are) falling apart.
The internet appears to be working decently. Besides, handing it over to the UN won't necessarily make it better and has a good chance of doing the reverse.
U.N. It's funny - you invent something and an expensive beaurocracy wants it.

No one controls the internet though.
I mean the interenet is basically a bunch of computers hooked up. No one has total control over it. How would it be possible to have the U.N control it?

It's just that right now, we have supposed control of the internet, and everyone else doesn't like it (forget the fact that the modern internet started with our ARPAnet and we are the ones who come out with the new technology to keep it going), so they want to take whatever power we have over it away from us, which is basically just domain name registration.Quote:

If you could take out 3 gatways you could control it. Heck one had some issues last year and severely slowed things up a bit.
Why not say that the UN should also control all oil and natural gas reserves along with pipelines and production, while they are at it? The oil disputes are way more serious. I'm sure the Middle Eastern countries would love to give up their primary means of income to the UN. How about electricity? Brown and black outs are bad anywhere in the world right? Let's let the UN control those production plants also. Oh, and Japan, everyone needs a car lets let the UN control all of the Japanese car production factories. Gold too, can't forget that since gold is the base for most currency reserves, we'll throw in other precious metals and gems while we are at it, the UN should control those also.
Ok sarcasm is over now. My point is that the Internet is a "product" that was developed and grown into a money making profitable good/service by the good ole USA. Not to mention the military implications of having this control. The US is not about to give up management of the Internet, no matter what the UN demands. So it's really a moot point, isn't it?

It is a commodity or product just like a utility. Maybe all the countries should just give up control of their own space based satelites as well...
The U.N. has become a group of power-hungry anti-American *******s. They have gone from a international peacekeeping force to a bloated swarm of buearocrats who can't even enforce their own resolutions. They have done everything in their power to weaken our national security, much less our nation. Like OverdueSpy said, it's getting ridiculous. They simply dislike America, and want to harm us.
In all fairness, I can't enforce my own resoulutions. Last year, said I'd loose weight... :D

Me too, I am weak and bloated. I said I would not drink as much beer. OK I am not fat, I run races to keep me at least somewhat out of the "heart attack" waiting to happen range, but I I love the suds. My resolution was a miserable failure, but this year I'll pass another resolution to enforce the 1st resolution. Maybe this time I will be successful.... hmmm but then again do I really want to succeed????
