Well for pop up's I currently use the google toolbar, It seems to do the job of blocking pop's quiet well.
As for big flashy adverts, I'm not usually bothered by them, So I can't really help you there.
If Your using WindowsXP, from service pack 2 onwards, Internet explorer will include its own pop up blocking, Which will be quiet usful
I presently use Netscape to block pop-ups and a little kludge file to block the flash ads. http://krath.dk/linux/flash_blocking/
I know this works on Linux but not sure about Windows. :D
I use opera :D Love it, if you still use IE I'd switch to opera or mozilla...
As for now there are so many irritating web components out there.... like flash ads, pop up, ad. i use Proximitron to block ads and pop up, mozilla to provide me MDI functions... though it renders webpages ugly imo, and no more irritating activeX pop up i think well definately it does the job well :D
i use a combination of your suggestions, i use opera for all web browsing where possible, always have proxomitron running, also i block any adservers i run into the the HOSTS file, mine is currenty half a meg ( i downloaded it somewhere, cant remember where tho sorry), try goggling for 'ad blocking hosts file', or '127.0.0.1 hosts file'
i'll attach mine in zip format for you to use if you like
For Windows and IE:

"Pop-up preventer 1.20"
http://www.panicware.com
"Pop-up Stopper"
The Agnitum personal firewall has a plug-in that seems to block a lot of Ads.
Cheers

google toolbar is the way to go! At first I thought it was going to be like every other toolbar I've seen, but its google I should have known better.

Does the trick on ads for me. Highly recommended.
Like many others here I am privy to the Google toolbar. When my job forces me to run in the windows environment I use the google toolbar it does the trick. I also check my host files every couple days make sure nothing has been added.

Download this little program http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...d,22947,00.asp . It's called turnflash and sits in your system tray and allows you to turn on and off flash with a mouseclick. The best part is that it's tiny (7 KB).

I use "middleman", which is a small proxy server (Similar to Proximitron, but still updated, open source, and works on Linux).
Unfortunately the default rule set breaks AO somewhat.
To block popups, I use my browser (Galeon).
To block ads and stuff, Middleman does it for me.
Flash adverts are annoying, I currently have no solution for blocking them. Sometimes I disable flash altogether, this is not available as a browser option, but can be done quite effectively by chmod'ing the flash player (libflashplayer.so) to 0 thus preventing it from running (takes effect without a browser restart too)
Slarty
I use the google search engine enough that I don't mind having the search line on a tool bar so I use the google toolbar and like it.
Gotta try "middleman", can't be a bigot..can I.. I have been useing Proxomotron for months.. Keeps the webpage load times LOW.. especially those with adds or animated gif's.. only prob is when using it with some web banking sites..(well all that I use) I middleman works here.. I will switch..maybe.. But it keeps out what ever crap you desire, pix, flash, java, animated gifs..
To find out about Proxomotron.. have search of the Tutorials.. Negetive did a great Tut on this Filter.. Neg also gives a download for it as well..
Cheers
but sometimes this tools do affect the layout of the website don't they
I use Kerio Personal Firewall to block pop-ups and ads. Doesnt affect the layout of the page at all. Where the ad would be, it says "Ad blocked by KPF". Plus you can add your own customizable paths to block like /adframe /popup /gator /mysearch, or whatever you want.
slick
I've grown accustomed to the Google toolbar. 32,953 ads blocked so far and it rarely misses a beat.
I use History Kill. It comes with a pop up killer. Although it cost money I really like it. It is mostly a history killer that kills temp files and junk, like recent documents. The pop up killer is also nice. It will kill anything that pops up beside your main window. And if you want to see one of the pop ups, all you have to do is hold ctrl and click the link again and the pop up will pop up this time. Just my personal opinion. And I know most of you dont wanna pay, but hey.

Ok how about when it comes to anti-spam software? What do you guys like using.
Well me personally I like this one:
POPFile
It's not as easy to configure as other anti-spam software. But on the other hand once you get it configured properly you'll be surprised at how powerful it is.
But the one thing that I really like about it is that it will allow you to set up additional categories called -- buckets.
On a sidenote the more buckets that you have the longer it will take for it to begin filtering accurately.Quote:
A bucket is just what it sounds like - it's one of any number of folders that your email can be classified into. You can have one for junk mail and one for regular mail, or one for your personal email, one for work, and one for spam. It's up to you.
But overall a very nice program.
Google Hotbar works really well..
well I use adsubtract pro 2.55
I have used this prog for 2 plus years now and it has been very effective in blocking everything from advertisements to pop ups and auto refresh pages and unwanted background music as well as cookies, referrers and java applets and java scripts. u can control each item independently on which u choose to filter. u can even block animations.

I have to agree with the others in here mentioning the google toolbar that thing works wonders. It caches the information after learning your habits and makes it so that you don't have to worry about pop ups any more. I recommend the google toolbar it does the trick and it's free!!
The only thing that I dont really like about the Google bar is:
But either than that it's great.Quote:
Google may collect information about web pages that you are viewing when the advanced functionality is enabled. However, this advanced functionality is optional, and can be easily disabled and re-enabled at any time (by selecting "Privacy Information..." in the Toolbar's "Google" menu.)
i use popup no-no and it workes very well to block those ads and if thats all you want it to do it will do only that, you just have to set the settings
you can dowload it from www.download.com
STOP-THE-POP is an awesome program
http://www.sureshotsoftware.com/stopthepop/
As mentioned by my many friends.. I use Google Toolbar.....
I found it extremely useful...... But I found one thing and that is that it blocks the page till the time it blocks all the Popups... Now typically if u lend on a fraud site...... U will see that the ads been blocked never come to end.. as a result you have to forcibly stop the page or forcibly close the browser CTRL_ALT_DEL way.... Now if you have many browser session active u may lose them when trying to forcibly close the browser.....
Apart from this it has great ease of use.....
for me gozillas admuncher combined with Zone Alarm did the job
