I'll go for it :)
Man...just trying to read the lines and dots on that picture is tough. I also have to try and find that book they mention... Anyone else going for it?
Edit: I now found the plain-text of the first clue. Shouldn't be too much further from here...
Well here is a hint.....or 2!!!
Code from Red Rover on Mars
l-l--lll---llllll--ll---l-ll---llll-lll---l-l--l--ll----l---ll--ll--ll----l
Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot.
Pale Blue Dot
Because of the reflection of sunlight off the spacecraft, the Earth seems to be sitting in a beam of light, as if there were some special significance to this small world. But it's just an accident of geometry and optics. The Sun emits its radiation equitably in all directions. Had the picture been taken a little earlier or a little later, there would have been no sunbeam highlighting the Earth.
And why that cerulean color? The blue comes partly from the sea, partly from the sky. While water in a glass is transparent, it absorbs slightly more red light than blue. If you have tens of meters of the stuff or more, the red light is absorbed out and what gets reflected back to space is mainly blue. In the same way, a short line of sight through air seems perfectly transparent. Nevertheless - something Leonardo da Vinci excelled at portraying - the more distant the object, the bluer it seems. Why? Because the air scatters blue light around much better than it does red. So the bluish cast of this dot comes from its thick but transparent atmosphere and its deep oceans of liquid water. And the white? The Earth on an average day is about half covered with white water clouds.
We can explain the wan blueness of this little world because we know it well. Whether an alien scientist newly arrived at the outskirts of our solar system could reliably deduce oceans and clouds and a thickish atmosphere is less certain. Neptune, for instance, is blue, but chiefly for different reasons. From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest.
But for us, it's different.
Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human who ever was, loved out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar”, every “supreme leader”, every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived here – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.
Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbour life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.
It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits that this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.
Carl Sagan
OK... Here is another Hint!!!
It's a Biggie!!!!
Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark.
In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
Carl Sagen
OOPS!!! I misspelled Carl's Last name
CARL SAGAN
Sorry Prof. I have Fat fingers... But not to worry... His name is not in the code!!
is that msg from the rover in morse?
if yes, then this would be the translation:
.-.. -....- .-.. -....- -....- .-.. .-.. .-.. -....- -....- -....- .-.. .-.. .-.. .-.. .-.. .-.. -....- -....- .-.. .-.. -....- -....- -....- .-.. -....- .-.. .-.. -....- -....- -....- .-.. .-.. .-.. .-.. -....- .-.. .-.. .-.. -....- -....- -....- .-.. -....- .-.. -....- -....- .-.. -....- -....- .-.. .-.. -....- -....- -....- -....- .-.. -....- -....- -....- .-.. .-.. -....- -....- .-.. .-.. -....- -....- .-.. .-.. -....- -....- -....- -....- .-..
can anyone do anything with this?
N/M LOL. I guess i should have just checked the website first :).
Nope.... Not in Morse
LOL!!!!!
You mean that there is no one here that can crack
this code..
New Clue.......
It has only 4 words.....
If the code is binary isnt every seven digits is a letter? hence 0000001 = a or something
pZargs <-----newb answers!!! lol
but had to try it anyway, and without decoding it I will just say its the saying that nasa sent with voyager that was put on the 24carat gold record.
just a guess......
Any more clues left???
Check the website to see if there are any more clues, the next one should be in 2 days...
All I need to really do is figure out how to change the lines into numbers and from there figure out which letters are what numbers.
I have some of the text to the lines, but doubt I'd really get that much done... I'll see if I can crack it after homework tonight...
In response to the thread title: YES I CAN!
After I got it figured out, and I started working on it... ||----||--||-|-||-------|-|-|-||---||--||||||-------|-|--|-|||--||-|-- gave it up...
That was fun :D
a little more help
the code -llll-llll-----l-ll-lll-l-l-l-ll--l---lll-------ll---llll----l----ll-l-l-llll--l---lll-l-ll-ll-----llll-ll-l--lll-ll-l-llll--l---ll---lll--l----ll----ll--ll--l---l-l-lll----l-l-ll---------lll--l-l-llll-----lll-l-l-lll-ll-lll---lll--l-l-l-ll---ll-ll--llllll-l---ll---lll-ll----ll-l---l-l--l-llll--l.---ll---lll--l-----llll-llll------lll-lll-lllll-ll-ll-llll--ll---lll----l-ll--,---ll---lll--l-----l-ll-l-lll-l-l---ll----ll--llll---llll---l-llll----l-lllll----ll--l---lllllll,---ll----ll--ll--ll----l---ll---llll---ll--l--ll---ll--llll---lll--l-ll-------ll----ll--ll-l-ll-------ll--ll--lll-l-ll-ll-l---l-l--lll---lll-l-lll-l-l---ll-ll--lll-l-----l---l-l-l-l---lll-l--------lll-l-llll--ll-l--lll--ll--ll----l---ll-----ll---lll-l-l-llll-----l---ll-llllll---l-l-l-l---lll-l-------llll-llll--lll--lll-l-ll-llll-----llll
from the longer message posted by Highlander "Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark.In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere"
translates into numbers ,according to clue 6

this is my first time at any type of cracking so i struggle onward

Maybe you should have posted hidden for other people who are working on this, but I'll help.
First, you will need to find some patterns between your encrypted (lines) and decrypted values (text from Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot). The punctuation will help you greatly. For example, since you've already found which line it came from, the second sentance has the word "in" both starting a sentance and right after a comma. Find which characters/numbers match after the sentance, and you will find the code for the word "in". Next comes "our," in both the first and second sentance. You will need to make some guesses while finding "in" and "our" as to what word is in the distance between them, and then start saying something like "this letter" is "this digit (or two, or three digits." It took me a long time, but after some guesses and finding that out, the entire sentance comes together and you will know what numbers equal which letter. Reread the official clues once more, and there may be an overlooked hint for finding out which digits equal which letter. (...common letters = ...)
Hope this can set you on the right track. It is a lot of guess work and trying, but the message at the end is worth it, IMHO. (Don't post the message either when you get it :) )
And for everyone else who reads this hidden post and isn't even considering solving it...your loss :booty:
Naaaa ......
Unless I tell you the answer...
I thought this was a place where no code goes unbroken....
OK you WIMPS!!!!
First word contains 4 letters
Second Word 3 letters
3rd word 4 letters
4th word 4 letters
Sheeeee!!!!!!
DO NOT POST THE ANSWER>>>>
Just tell us when you get it....
Never seen a bunch of wimps in all my life....
And you call yourseves code breakers!!!
Sheee... There have been less than 300 people....
And not one from this group...
What a bunch a WIMPS!!!!!
It is not that hard and I gave you more clues that the main site did
I handed it to you on a silver platter.
I guess there are not that many code breakers in the world....
especially here at Antionline!!!
The shame of it all!!
just so you know i had a long boring meeting today so i decided to pass the time with the code. You are right the message is cute but a bit expected.
any way it was fun
Good for you....
I was wondering if all of the Antionline users were WIMPS!!!
Now to figure out how to prove you got the certificate....
Maybe a Pic of you holding the Certificate :p
Well, a screen capture with your Antionline Alias in the Certificate????
Lets see if others come up with the Certificate :D
Highlander - I think everyone avoids the crypto forums; hence the few replies. This is a fairly well read thread but I'm sure not everyone acturally understands what the point of this DVD was. I sure didn't until I spent about 30 minutes browsing the entire website figuring it out.
For those of you who are wonder what this DVD is about, basically well before the rover went to mars a ton of people e-mailed saying they wanted their name on it. Then it was decided that this secret message would be printed on the outside of the DVD where it would have a picture taken on Mars (with the highest-res cam on Mar). It is an effort to gain public involvement in the thing, but they do a poor job of pointing that out. The page Highlander linked to assumed you understood the point of all of that. So for those of you who want to give it a try, go to the clues website, take a look at the pictures of the DVD and type it out in notepad. Look through all of the clues and when absolutely stumped, and you feel like it is impossible, look at the hidden posts here to get back on track. The message still hasn't been posted, and the point is to not post it but simply know what it is. It is cute, and you get a nice little certificate out of the deal that you can print out.
And speaking of printing it out...my trusty dot-matrix printer eXploded. :D
And my scanner...well...um...had a lot of light refraction...and created a negative image? :p
And for some reason...ummm...well...you can try to take a look at my certificate. ;)
Anyways, it proves that I did solve it, and makes it impossible for anyone else to steal my image and photomanipulate it since I'm sure it is very, very, concidental that these events even happened in the first place...lol. Okay, so the story of the printer and everything was a joke. But anyways...

:D
here you go. Of course if you would like more proof i can send you a pm with the message.
cheers
Yep its a cool challenge, figured it out by hand, then just for the hell of it wrote a python script, took me a while to figure out how to convert 3 bit binary to decimal in python but i got there
i2c
I found the page today when there were seven clues already. It was a fairly easy task to crack the code, just time consuming. It helps a bit if you have heard of the Huffman minimum redundancy code, which is a quite interesting algorithm. I figured that I could create a script to solve the code at least to get the decimal numbers and their frequencies but came to the conclusion that writing the program would take more time than creating a quick macro to cut the l--ll-ll---llll- series into groups of three and then search'n'replacing them with their decimal equivalents. Hey, eight search-and-replaces isn't a big job. :p
By the way, there's an error in one of the clues... :brickwall Luckily it's not very fatal.
You might also get some kicks out of this pdf, letter frequency counts in English or the following html-document: http://deafandblind.com/word_frequency.htm
I did it once there were 3 clues there, only created a script to test my knowledge of python. wasnt really interested in being there first or anything just did it to test my coding knowledge
i2c
Well, I decided to give it a try....
It is a cute message.... once you solve the first word, the rest is obvious!
Anyhow, here's my certificate
I cracked it finally. Took me longer to get the joke than it took to decode it, I always ended up being the guy that laughes after everyone else starts to forget about the joke... How do I post my certificate up here? Anyone that wants to tell me just pm please.
Thanks
Boogymantroy
Edit: Ok I guess I am just retarded. :)
here is my certificate
Got it in 6 hours. That was fun. Oh, you wanted proof. Well .....
1-11-11--------1-1-1-
On second thought, I'll leave it at this - just take my word for it =)
The puncuation fits this phrase
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbour life.
There is nowhere else, at least in the near future,
to which our species could migrate.
and this phrase.
Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark.
In our obscurity,
in all this vastness,
there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us
from ourselves.
But the last letters do not seem to match in Either phrase. Interesting.
They do match. One of the two test excerpts you have (I'm not telling you which one) is the correct cyphertext. Once you correctly decrypt the symbols to digits and the digits to text, you'll see that you were mistaken.
how about take this
1-1---1-11-----1-1--1-111--11-1--
Umm, what font are they using on those issued certificates? Err... nevermind. Here's mine. :D
OK here is mine!!!
Its good to see so many views....
And to see some post of the certificates
Now lets see how many Legit Certificates can be posted !!!
Hello this is my first post i've been reading the non-hidden posts as you've posted on this thread, and I have the passage cracked that uses this code.
-llll-llll-----l-ll-lll-l-l-l-ll--l---lll-------ll---llll----l----ll-l-l-llll--l---lll-l-ll-ll-----llll-ll-l--lll-ll-l-llll--l---ll---lll--l----ll----ll--ll--l---l-l-lll----l-l-ll---------lll--l-l-llll-----lll-l-l-lll-ll-lll---lll--l-l-l-ll---ll-ll--llllll-l---ll---lll-ll----ll-l---l-l--l-llll--l.---ll---lll--l-----llll-llll------lll-lll-lllll-ll-ll-llll--ll---lll----l-ll--,---ll---lll--l-----l-ll-l-lll-l-l---ll----ll--llll---llll---l-llll----l-lllll----ll--l---lllllll,---ll----ll--ll--ll----l---ll---llll---ll--l--ll---ll--llll---lll--l-ll-------ll----ll--ll-l-ll-------ll--ll--lll-l-ll-ll-l---l-l--lll---lll-l-lll-l-l---ll-ll--lll-l-----l---l-l-l-l---lll-l--------lll-l-llll--ll-l--lll--ll--ll----l---ll-----ll---lll-l-l-llll-----l---ll-llllll---l-l-l-l---lll-l-------llll-llll--lll--lll-l-ll-llll-----llll.
But apparently this isn't the "special code" that needed to be cracked? ( Only like 50 characters fit in the answer box and the code is a whole passage ) I couldn't seem to find the link to the set of code that needed to be cracked for the answer, would someone be kind enough to post a link, or just post the code to be cracked?
Thanks alot
n3rd
Edit: Nevermind heh, I didn't get it the first time that you had to read the code off the picture, heh. I got my cert gotta print it at home though, no pdf reader's at work :)
helloo !!
can u crack this password was coded = aepTOqxOi4i8U . isi it MD5 ??? . tell me .

What is this password to? There are many password cracking utilities out there, it is best to select one created for the file you are trying to crack and if it is a system you have access to then try the NT OFFLINE PASSWORD AND REGISTRY EDITOR BOOTDISK...
p.s. write me from jail.
or a CISCO enable password. A lot of possibilities.
