hello i have windows xp and a linksys wireless router
PROBLEM:this is whats happening ,i have one computer that is currently connectd to the internet (the one i am on ). this computer is connected to the modem and to the router.
but my other computer connected to the router can not go on the internet what do i do to fix this and whats happening

I'm confused about your network setup
If you have the first setup. Did you set up ICS correctly? Since you have the router. Why not run it first and then run all the PCs into the router, it'll work much better.Code:Router -- PC -- Modem or PC

If you are running the second connection. I'm guessing you are on cable? I suppose it could be some DSL companies as well. Anyways you only get one IP Address.. which is why the router is needed. Your on PC is grabbing the IP address and the router can't get an address. Since the router doesn't have an IP... nothing behind the router can get online.
Eitherway you need a straightforward connection Modem -- Router -- PCs

Does your router assign addressed based on DHCP? Because then you shouldn't be entering information, you should just tell it to obtain information from DHCP Server. The reason you got the conflict is because you copied the IP Address, so two computers on the same network had the same IP address (see a problem :) )... When you say you have it the right way do you mean Modem - Router -- PCs? What is the IP address associated with the working PC.. is it private or public? (what is the address..)

If I'm reading your question correctly you have computer A and computer B both are communicating with the router and you want them to communicate with each other. The example I'm giving assumes w2k (I have not done it with XP but it should be similar).
Ensure that you have sharing enabled (Right click on the folder you want to share and select properties then go to sharing and create shareName). Now go to the computer attempting to reach the one where you just made the share. Click start->run and enter \\<sysName>\shareName you can most likely do it without the shareName.
Note shareName is a placeholder for the example. You can get the <sysName> by right clicking on My Computer and selecting properties and then selecting the Network ID tab or computer name tab (can't recall, currently in a location where I cannot check and this system is running NT 4).
You can also right click network neighboorhood and select map network drive and then enter \\<sysName>\share. To test if the systems reconize each other you can do ping <sysName> if the request times there is a deeper issue.
I hope that I have provided some clear guidance and that you are able to resolve your networking issue.

ps this looks weird I thought that private wireless network ips lookedlike this 192.168........
but the computer that is hooked up to the internet has an ip starting with 68.51.......
and the computer that is not online its ip is 192.168.......
do you want me to attach a snapshot of what i see.if i do could people hack into my computer with those numbers :confused:

Okay, what you want to do is first, make sure that your router is set up as 192.168.1.1 . This should be under LAN ip address. Then make sure your subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. Your WAN connection should be get IP automatically.
Then make sure your router is acting as a DHCP server and make sure it starts at 192.168.1.100
Finally on each computer, go to netowork connections, and right click your uplink NIC ( the one that is connected to the router). Go down to TCP/IP protocal and click properties. Make sure both IP and DNS are both set to automatic. Do this on both computers. Also make sure that both computers are on the same workgroup if you want to share files. To do this, right click my computer and go to properties; it is in there.
Restart your computer if you have to. If all this doesn't work, turn off your firewalls or IDS and try again.
Make sure all your cables are plugged in correctly and that you can actually ping the router.
Go to start->run and type in cmd. Once the terminal opens up type ping 192.168.1.1 and if you get a reply then you are good. If not you either have your protocal set up wrong, your nic is bad, your cable isn't plugged in, or you don't have your computer set up to accept DHCP.

He needs to unplug the computer on the internet and plug it into the router like myself, Lansing Banda and other's have told him.. This is his problem. His one computer is plugged in directly to the net, meaning he doesn't have it setup correctly (even tho he insists he does). I'm guessing this also means the router might not be dialing up the net/connecting to the wan properly (because he doesn't know what he's doing.. as he's admitted). He needs to unplug the computer on the internet and plug it into the router like myself, Lansing Banda and other's have told him.. oh I understood it to be that he had the modem plugged into the router, and one computer going, but couldn't get the other one going that was plugged into the router.

Ahem..... Hitman, can we make this easy..... please..... ;) You have made some, unqualified staement that make your currebt setup confusing, to say the least.....
A 192.168.x.x address cannot be contacted directly across the internet... so you can tell us those addresses.... the other address, 68.51.x.x, is your public address on the router itself.... Don't tell us that, just call it the "public address".
On the machine that is currently working:-
1. If the IP address of the working machine is a 192.168.x.x address then look at it's configuration and duplicate it on the other machine _if_ it says "obtain IP address automatically" and "obtain DNS automatically", (or words to that effect).
3. If it is your "public address" you have miswired your router/network. If that is the case unplug everything. Take the cable from the modem the ISP supplies and plug it into the WAM port of the router. Take the cables of the two computers and plug them into the ports numbered 1, 2, 3 or 4...... Set both the computers to "obtain IP address automatically" and "obtain DNS automatically", (or words to that effect). Shut down all the devices for two minutes. Power up everything in this order:-

WAM..... Ah.....Yes..... er.... I was referring to the.... er..... Wide Area Modem...... Yeah, that's it, the wide area modem..... That's what the tech chap called it when he installed my cable..... I think..... He plugged it into my hard drive and now I can see the Internet thingy, (well, Comcast's Internet), on the computer. I don't have AOL so I can't see their Internet but I hear it's full of kiddies so I'm not really all that bothered. Someone said I should get an anti-bacteria to stop nasty things happening to my email and someone else told me I should get a fire hydrant(?) because there are snakes on Comcast's Internet but I can't see how a fire hydrant kills snakes, (does it drown them?).
Oh well, time to go to work. I'm the Senior Technology Consultant to the Department of Homeland Security you know...... I'm teaching them all about TC/PIP and PUD so they can stop the terrorists from blowing up WalMart across the internet........
