Small Network
ok well im kinda mixed up about this..i brought a linksys router today and i set it all up couple mins ago and on my laptop i can connect with no prob...donteven have to install anything but on my desktop i dont know wtf is wrong with it...i have 2 ethernet cards and i tried them both, but it just cant establish a connection with my dsl modem through my router, it does have router connection though. any solutions for this?
-
Have a look under tcp ip properties and make sure Get ip address automaticaly is selected also make sure you have dhcp client running as serves
-
well i did that yes...but i solved it somehow now...i followed some directions on the start guide it said something like go to internet explorer and go to 192.168.1.1 and log in by this and that and there i set my ISP up and other stuff...ok now i know how to connect with my desktop, now ima go see how to connect with laptop lol
-
RTFM, lmao
I thought you would have done that 192.168.1.1 to set the router up.
-
ok i got both set up...but one question, i set my drive on my desktop to be shared on the network but i cant see it on the laptop...?
-
-
Where are you looking? my network places. Try creating a new network connection to it. You can also map a network drive through my computer>>tools>>map network drive.
-
i have set up a network on desktop but not on laptop yet...the laptop had internet connection but no network set up yet so i guess after that it should show up
-
-
Well as long as you have shared folders and both computers are in the same workgroup they should see each other without having to go throght the wizards.
-
I think you still have to create the short cuts though. I may be wrong though.
-
You have to map the network drive if you don't see it in my network places, but thats it.
-
now i actually think i didnt set up my network correct...there are 5 choices to choose from and i dont know which one cause its like this...
DSL Model > Router > 1 laptop and 1 desktop
and if u go into set up network office i think its the option 4 but it cant finish the setup on that option
-
All you should need to do is right click on the folders you want to share, select sharing and security, then share this folder on the network.
Also make sure that you installed file and printer sharing.
-
well i guess im missing that, but i dunno if i installed it right at all because i cant use net send commands, nor file sharing at least not yet...how do i know if i installed it right?
-
Start>>network connections>>local area connections>>properties
-
hahaha this sux....i dunno if i have set it up right for 1...then again when i enable share files on my 1394 connection on my laptop the internet wont even work lol...yea im confused but i guess ill sleep on it and leave it as it is right now, they both got internet w00t :D
-
don't enable the 1394. All you want is your Local Area Connection.
install file and printer sharing like jinxy told you to, then share a folder right click - sharing and security - share tis folder on the network.
Make sure both computers are in same workgroup
start - right click my computer - properties - computer name and make sure they are both the same for workgroup.
Do you have any firewalls running?
-
well i got norton firewall on desktop and linksys built in firewall...when u say enable file and printer sharing u mean just check the box...cause its enabled on all of them
-
Open up norton, go to personal firewall then configure and add you IP range in there.
heres mine.
/edit yes I know my firewall is disabled but thats just for networking purposes right now, I am behind a hardware firewall.

Are both the desktop and laptop on the same subnet? Part of the same work group?
You said net send won't work, how about ping and ipconfig?
You mention 2 nic cards, are the two computers networked together and the router, or each to the router only?
Have you established that you can access all shared folders without the firewall in place?
-
Hey all...i know it has been some time since this thread started and finished w00t, but i just wanted to let ya know i followed that advice to start it all over again and to set up laptop 1st and if its all ok then set up the desktop and now it all works...internet and filesharing, pinking is great too
thanks all

Ive had the same problem with my D-Link router, but i found out it blocks every thing, soi made some firewall rules that allow LAN pc's to use certain ports e.g 135 etc, you could allways give that a try
