how do you restart windows xp in safe mood? That sounds really bad but it isn't in my options when I go to shut down :(

No, when your computer is starting up you can press either F8 or F5 then select "safe mode" from the menu you are presented with.

Trust me, it's F8.

You have to catch it right after your machine finishes posting (all the DOS looking stuff that flys by when you boot). If you see the WinXP splash screen, then you missed your window of opportunity and you'll have to restart and try again.

You can use either of them, they both do the same thing! Try it!

LOL, can't you see that I'm trying to be difficult? :)

Anyway, he is correct. Both will work, but I have taken the "modern" approach of F8 rather than the legacy F5.

Knowing that F5 brings up the boot menu should date the old farts hanging around this place. ;)

thanks for the help but I still can't get rid of this DSO-exploit, I am using S & D, there are 5 of them and they just keep coming back like 5 seconds later even when I get rid of them in search mode

What are you using to try to get rid of them?

I think the the problem you are having is to do with your registry.

Presumably Spybot has picked up on some unwelcome registry entries?
The sort of key you should see is something like:
HKEY_USERS\S-2-8-20\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3

If so, update your registry, so go to Start->run->regedit

You should see a key of '1004' (REG_SZ) - delete it.
Then create a new DWORD value called 1004, and set the (hex) value to 3.
Repeat for all registry entries, and that should fix it.

If this doesn't make sense, then PM me, and it is definitely a good idea to back up the registry first!

EDIT: Should have added that it looks as if Spybot does kill the DSO problem, but doesn't clean up the registry, which is why it gets confused ...
The key thing here :D is that the 1004 value should be a DWORD, and not a REG_SZ value, so it probably doesn't matter anyway.

I just continuously hit the f8 key until it beeps and easy peasy safe mode
