RICHMOND, Va. -- A lawsuit filed Tuesday challenges a new state law that effectively bans nude summer camps for teenagers, saying it violates the constitutional right to privacy.

The American Civil Liberties Union sued in federal court to keep the state from shutting down a no-clothing camp for juveniles in late July at the White Tail Park nudist camp in Ivor.

The law was passed in March in response to a weeklong residential camp for 11- to 18-year-olds last June at White Tail. It was the first in Virginia and only the third such au naturel camp for juveniles in the nation, according to the American Association of Nude Recreation.

"Legislators overreacted and in the process they substantially interfered with the right of families to make lifestyle choices," Virginia ACLU executive director Kent Willis said. "Using the overall logic of this law, legislators are now free to prevent children from swimming, playing baseball or riding a bus."

to me nudism means being scratched and bitten by everything in the great outdoors and smelling like a oily rag. but if someone wants this for their own kids i say let them have it. i hate to agree with the aclu but im afraid i have to.

11 to 18 year olds, isnt 11 a little bit too young. I'm glad it got banned, but it's only my opinion !

Wow, I totally missed out on sex camp when I was a kid. All I had was boyscouts and Winnataska.

Now to think about it, what sick pervert would start this camp, and what sick parent would send there kids to that sick pervert!!!

Whatever our own thoughts on this might be, the issue here is wether parents should be allowed to send their kids into a nude camp or not. It should be dealt with in the objective for the sake of this discussion, I think.

I say the ACLU should win. It might seem like an unimportant fact for many, but the thing is while slowly stripping the people of certain liberties, the government is dictating on its subjects what they should do. When there are only so many things one can do without the danger of arrest, surely a lot of people will succumb and trade off their[desired] lifestyle for whatever there is in store. While the analogy with the bus is a bit extreme here, chances are there might exist dress codes for people on the streets, or maybe there will be banned types of clothing.

Now aside from the fact any liberty lost is turning the country slowly into a police state, I really do believe that if parents and children consent for the kids to be naked at such an event then the state should not be allowed to impose decency rules like this one. If they are concerned about privacy they should stop reading people's e-mails and allow the Feds to get into anybody's life for whatever hunch some agent has. Double standards like this never lead to a better society. Everybody feels safe when there are guns pointed [by the state] at everybody. And you have to be a Brady not to care.

The court didn't say they couldn't send the young naked pubescent daughters to a camp full of young naked boys. Not at all, they said the parents must attend with them. Not sure how that is turning us into a police state. "If you want to send your naked kids to camp with other kids, at least go with them. Have fun." That's my take on the outcome. But still if they agree and controls are set, why not it's private property. I don't think it's a great situation. I was a kid, and you can't tell me they are any different. ;) The law should only step in if there becomes an issue of abuse? Not sure on that one, but that seems ok.

to me this whole idea of nude summer camps just seems like it is just another of how oversexualized our nation has become. ranging from the music that people listen to going all the way to these summer camps......

if they want to go, let them... if they get diseases, fine, survival of the fittest, they die and i live another day (and i won't have to deal with their stupidity ;))

I only read Tedob1's post and from that it came out as permanently ban. If I have time I'll read the whole linked article.

You will be hard pressed finding accurate info. the ACLU want's you to believe the sky is falling. In fact their language is hard pressed to mention nude or naked, they use alertative lifestyle as usual. But the real case was, they want mom and dad there.

Wait, are we talking indecent exposure at nude camps? Is that even logically possible? I was extrapolating on how this might, in years, become an issue [the dress code]. Otherwise no, there is nothing out there yet. But nude camps can hardly be indecent exposure because... well it's not like you're there for chips and cola.

And it's not oulawing family camps. Only those were it's only kids and NOT the parents. :) Might place a different perspective for some. Who knows.

All right, based on this I do say it provides a bit more security. If the parents would allow their kids to go naked, then they themselves are not strangers to the lifestyle. Given the fact that between 11 and 18 a lot of things could happen [;)] maybe it's not that awful an idea.

As long it's not banning the idea of teens being nude someplace :)

where the hell was that camp when I was a kid??? I had to look at chicks in bikinis and imagine them naked... damn, is imagining chicks naked too good for kids these days? why should they have it any better than I did?
