Mobile (pre-paid) phones, open wi-fi networks, 0wn3d boxes, proxy chains, anything you can think of that will make it harder to trace them.
You mentioned about proxy chains...what are they ?.Is there any site which gives detailed information regarding this ???
A proxychain is a chain of proxies (Duh! ;) )Quote:

PC>----[proxy1]---->[proxy2]----->[proxy3]--->[proxy4]---->[website]
The website only "sees" the IP address of proxy4. So if a LEA wants to know who it was they'll have to confiscate the logs from proxy4 only to find out it logged the address of proxy3. They'll confiscate the logs from proxy3 which only contains the ip address of proxy2...... etc.
You can imagine how difficult it gets when these proxies are scattered all over the world. Every country has it's own laws (or lack thereof) about computercrimes so it'll take forever to trace (if they're able to do it in the first place).
in hackers the punk using the phone box spliced into the phone line and connected his modem to that, Its been a while since ive seen it, and ive never properly watched it but he might of been using an acoustic coupler..basically if you imagine picking up your phone when your on dial up and holding it to another phone then it uses that other phone. acoustic couplers were used in the begining on the net, you see one used in wargames also where he places the phone in a holder.
he could also of been blueboxing to get the free call.
i2c
empty factories and apartment building usually have some live connection along with a collection of winos and crack addicts.
in 'hackers' they used a public phone in the middle of china town something you couldn't pull off today. i think a large number of skiddies use boxs of regular people they hi-jack. usually no logs are keep to point back to them so it doesn't matter wether they are home or not after they own them.
while its true the last proxy can only see the one before it, the first can see the whole chain in the request.
And it's so easy to get a wireless connection in any big city now. If you've got a laptop just buy a wireless card and you can just walk around to get a decent signal.
You can also get a paid for connection(cash) in a lot of coffee shops, no ID no hassles, with a any type of wireless capible device. For a laptop I wonder if they care if someones spoofing their MAC or even have a clue to what secuirty is in general.
Lets not forget physical security. if they have physical access to the machine .. thats one way :) ofter overlooked too
Using University or Library computers are also popular, have boot disk will travel.
Today's more popular method's are probably owned boxes and proxychain's. Those are used more frequently whereas the telephone method was "back in the day". That method is called phreaking.
SirDice: I don't know much about using pre-paid cell phone's. Care to interest me in how that work's, why, background info, link's, etc?
prepaid phones would be ideal becasue you can pick them up out of vending machiens where I live. you use the cell to dial out instead a phone line, using a "hacked" account and now you have a live connection with nothing to trace it back to you.
Just a note on using cellphones. If "they" (LEA) want to find you and once they know which provider you abused they can find the cellphone's number. Once they have the number they can do a triangulation of your signal to pinpoint your location. So you need to travel alot to keep 'm busy ;)
Er yeah.
Or you just clip the 3 prong 3.5 " jack straight into the back of your head.
It causes momentary discomfort but allows depth perception etc.
P.S god has licensed the matrix engine for his next creation !
Don't you need a GPRS package with your mobile service provider? With Vodafone in this country you can't get that on pre-payed.
Wi-Fi network abuse is definitly on the up and up. From my house, I can normaly pick up between 7 - 23 access points, in which only 2 of them use wep. I think the days of splicing a payphone in a trainstation to hack a Gibson are long over...hehe, broadband abuse is where it's at. Funny movie though....
Jinxy: No, it's something all cellphone providers are able to do. Depending on the coverage the area can be big or small. They just need to know your signal strength at atleast 3 accesspoints (is that the correct term for mobile phones?). Draw 3 circles around those points indicating the signal strength and you're dead :eek:
SirDice: i was refering to gprs not gps.Lol
Gprs=general packet radio service
Gps=Global possitioning system.
Lol I used an old siemens mobile phone wich emulated a 56k6 or ISDN modem (just under real 64Kbit speed) which allowed me to dial into a "free" internet provider ;)
That should work on a prepaid..
now let's see a prepaid 10 Euro card gets me how many hours of hacking ???
damn.. I could have done so much evil ;)
Now GPRS would be better (faster) but hell who needs that, if you know wtf you are doing ;)
Damn. My bad... TMA (Too Many Acronyms) :rolleyes:Quote:
I have an old 6210, I can use it to dialup to Internet. The speed isn't all that great (9600 baud) but all you need is some sort of terminal connection to any old 0wn3d box and off you go :D
Local guys in Warsaw, Poland? =P
Oh and the Macy's in the local area here (DC) use Linksys WiFi cards to connect their registers to (what I'm assuming) a central finance server somewhere in the store. Like you said Mr. Koww, alot of stores do this.
Back on topic, library's have always been a favorite of mine, not to do anything illegal of course, but just in the name of 'anonmidity' (sp?)
And if your worried about using your local AP at Starbucks, just make or buy your own antenna and pull bandwidth from a safe distance(of course the foot long PVC pipe stickin out of your car might tip off the local authorities)
Quite often I've been able to connect online using a CVS Pharmacy hotspot. Probably using the same system as the Macy's in DC.
Hmm pharmacies eh...thats lots of Privacy Act information that might be passing back and forth over the air. What will these people think up of next? WiFi in banks? I say that sarcastically, but I bet there are setups out there.
Oh well, that kind of thinking will keep all of us folks gainfully employed, so I shouldn't complain.
*is still looking forward to his pringle can antenna* My wife, however, thinks I'm nuts.
