Hey everyone, I have a basic question.
In the full header of yahoo email,
there's
Received: from by web20408.mail.yahoo.com via HTTP
Is that the IP of my computer. If I send out an email, would I be exposing my IP? thanks :)

Nope, not yours. That's Yahoo's webserver. Your safe.
Only if you send out an anonymous e-mail could it possibly contain you're IP address in the header of the e-mail message. But the mail service you signed up for (in this case yahoo) has what's called a mailserver it goes through and that's the IP you see.
If you telnet to an Smpt server and send a mail then your ip addres will be exposed.Quite often while sending E-cards, the receiver gets your ip address
Alterk0de: I dunno about the e-card ordeal, are you sure? I highly doubt that the receiver see's the IP address. However, when telnetting to a SMTP (not the other way around, I know it's confusing but think Simple Mail Transfer Protocol ;)) server then I believe your IP could show up.
Wrong. Sending from Yahoo's e-mail server does show your IP when someone views full headers... you can test it out by sending yourself an e-mail, like I have in the pic below.Quote:
theReaper is absolutely right... you guys might want to take a look at the X-Originating-IP header in your "anonymous" emails.
yeah..i'm sure about the e-card.Try sending an e card to yourself and thank you for correcting me.Check out more about headers in Carolyn Meinel' site

nah that is not your Ip... your IP is solid numbers (56.105.164.26) There is an example of what an IP looks like so you do not need to worry! that is not your IP it is some yahoo IP... your IP may show during an e mail when you send it though. that i could not tell you... i do not use yahoo mail.
jr05linux, I can ensure you that is my IP, I run a server off of that IP normally, and have domains pointing at it, and just to float your boat, I went to whatismyip.com and took a picture for you.Quote:

Actually I still am right. He asked if that was his IP showing, and I guarantee you that web20408.mail.yahoo.com is not his IP/domain.
And jr05 wasn't talking to you, he was talking to alterkode. And he was right too. You would know if your home computer wasn't running as a block number type IP and was running as a domain like alterkode stated.
No, you're wrong, the IP part he left due to common sense and fear of not having other's port scan the hell out of him. As for e-mails, unless sent through a chain of computers/proxy has your home computer's IP attached to it since it is sent via TCP/IP - INTERNET PROTOCOL.Quote:

Not unless it's mail, then it's SMTP. Remember that. And:
That's what both of us were saying, was that the domain/IP specified definitely couldn't be his. Btw: Glad to see you up Neg ;)Quote:

Yahoo doesn't use POP does it? He connects via HTTP, say hello to TCP/IP.
Hrmm good point but because it's a mail service, Yahoo won't have your IP address in a header of any email document. They will have their mailserver.
It's similiar with trying to get IP's through AIM. You try netstat without a direct connection to the person, you'll only get AIM's server or whatever. It's not until you directly connect with them that you can get there IP. Catch my drift?
Since you're trying to pretty much rebute a proven fact that I have proven with pictures and tried to explain, I'll let someone else try to take up my side..
I'm not questioning nor attacking your knowledge or "proven" fact's. However, my email service (when a e-mail message is recieved) doesn't have the sender's IP in the header. Maybe I'm not doing something right or not looking at something clearly. It's not a matter of side's, I'm sure the original poster as well as myself would like to learn more about the issue as I'm obviously confused, no? I'm merely presenting to you what's in front of me.
What e-mail provider do you use?
Currently MSN Hotmail. Glad you can help me learn a little something since I'm obviously confused about the issue. But I don't see my own IP when I send a message to myself. I even asked my friend to do the same (and I know my friend's IP) but to no luck.
Took a few mins to set one up, but It's a 2 step process, first go to options, then e-mail display options, then check full for headers display, now e-mail yourself... I've thrown two pics together in one .zip... enjoy them my friend.
BTW, I WIN! =)
madjag, eh? I remember that one you sly devil you ;). Anyway's, thanks for the help and for teaching me something. I accept defeat (yes, you win) and I'm not that bad a loser. But anyway's, thanks again for the help and everything.
