New RIAA Copyright?

I havent posted here for a while, but I have come acrossed a problem. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or anyone can help me solve it.

Ok, first let me explain my situation. I spend alot of my time on the computer, like most of you. When I buy a new cd, I like to rip it into MP3 and add the songs to my playlist. I do not use Kazaa or any P2P applications, so there is no illegal reasons for this. Normally I have a program that will rip my cds, and Im good to go. But I have bought two cds now that I cant rip. When I open up Explorer and click on my cd drive, I cant find any songs to rip. I cant play the cd in winamp or windows media player. This is really starting to annoying. I was wondering if any knew about this. Is this a new copyright protection to stop P2P sharing and is there a way around it?
Also, When you put a cd in your computer, I would normally play the cd in winamp or something of the sort right? Well with both of these cds, I cant do that. But I have found out that I can put my headphones in the headphone slot on the cd drive, and listen to it thro there. I have never used this before, one, becuz I didnt know it was there, and two, becuz I think it is stupid.
Also, for your information. The two cds that I bought that I cant play in winamp are Sugarcult (Palm Trees and Power Lines) and The Get Up Kids (Guilt Show).
Any information is nice. I just hope someone can help me figure out how to get around this.

Sorry for being stupid.............are you saying that the CDs won't autostart in whatever, and that your system is not even seeing them in Explorer?

Have you tried them in another computer?............I have seen this kind of behaviour when the CD was on the way out.......

Forget about "ripping" will the things just play regular?.............they ought to.........you might like to try an audio (hi-fi) CD player as well.

Yes, I am saying that the cd will not autostart in any kinda of media player. Explorer autostarts and shows the cd. The only thing in there is a folder, with nothing in it, and webpage links. I believe that the folder with nothing in it has the songs hidden in it somehow.
Yeah, I tryed putting the cd in my dad computer, same thing. Only worked thro the headphone jack on the actual cd drive. I also tryed it on another computer, this one did not have a headphone jack on the cd drive, and I could not get it to play at all. It is very weird. I have never seen this until I bought these two cds.
Forgetting about ripping, ;) The cd will not play normal on any computer. Like I said before, the only why I can get it to run is tho the headphone jack on the cd drive. Now if I put the cd in a cd player or stereo, it runs just fine. I dont know what to do, besides just forget about listen to these cds on my computer and just put them in my stereo. Any idea?

How old are these CD drives?...............this one is well old............like 20x, and will not play some CDs that 40x/48x/52x will?

Have you tried it in a DVD drive?

I must admit that this is a new one on me

I suspect it might be an old CD drive/new media issue

Please try it with a modern CD drive, and a DVD drive

I highly doubt it is a "old CD drive/new media issue" becuz my computer is fairly new. Its not even six months old. The speed on my cd drive is 52x32x52x. Im not sure, but I think that it can handle most audio cds. I dont have a DVD drive, Im going to try my cd in my PS2. Im not sure if this completely defetes the purpose of trying it in a DVD drive, but what the hell.
Yes, The cds play in my PS2. So I still have no idea. Like I said, the only thing I can think of is that it is some new copywrite...

Copywrite is the problem. Not sure of where you are, but over here there should be a warning somewere on the back cover saying this disk will not play in a pc.

Take them back and say they are defective, and you want a replacement that will play in your pc.

Just my CD/Radio/cassette/Vinyl machine is patched through to a PC so I can copy anything I like..........

Sounds kinda weird for a security/anti-copy thing................like does it say on the wrapper that it won't play on a PC..................if it doesn't............take it back to the store and demand one that works or your money back............or a "free" $3000 Sony system............their problem..............I guess you have "consumer rights" in the USA?

AFAIK you cannot stop media being played on the media player of User's choice...........not legally anyways?

I am still in favour of a hardware/media problem here.

Well, I looked all over the cd, cd cover, and cd booklet and could not find any warning of the kind. I do believe that it is a copyright problem. But if I return to the store and tel them its defective and want one that plays in my pc...they cant give me one can they? If it truely is a copyright problem, then wouldnt all of the cds have it on there, therefor making all of the cds useless in my pc? If this is true, then am I pretty much screwed?

They are screwed...............particularly when you write to the local newspaper and mention that they sell non-functional crap to impoverished students?

Anyways, you get your money back, and they cannot sell that CD as "new".............get about 5,000 on your campus to do the same, and the record label will see reality?

They want to and they are trying their best to. I have seen cd's that will only play in their own plugin for wmp, which stops you saving to disk. Will not play in a car hifi.

can you PM me with some references to those items................it is TOTALLY ilegal, and I would love to sue..................and at least get them banned from operating in the EC............

Hell the stress and worry caused by my wife not being able to listen to the latest "Billy Goat and the sheep S******s" CD has got to be worth 5 billion in damages :D

I do believe that these chappies are getting way to clever for themselves.
