I've got a small problem... I'm in a household that uses Juno for internet. For those that do not know, juno is an ISP that runs a program on your computer and hosts the internet through there. Problem is that there isn't a linux version, only a lindows version. I also can't afford my own internet provider so I get stuck with Juno. Is there any free ISP out there for linux that I can use? I've tried google but come up blank. Any ideas that you can give me would be greatly appreciated :D
can't you get a program like wine?!?? (i think it is called wine) that allows you to run windows programs under linux? that would allow you to run the software needed
The program JUNO comes with is pretty much just a dialer. It dials out to the ISP. all you need to do is look around the JUNO program for the telephone number then type it in Linux (exactly where I'm not sure) and type your username and password normally and I believe it should work.

doesn't work. Juno works with IE and with windows dial up networking... and because of that won't run under linux. will install but it won't run afterwards.

will try but before I get offline to do this, I think that juno also uses some kind of encryption so that you can't use without their software. proprietary crap.
Did you try calling them and asking them? A lot of distros come with WINE installed. start up xwindows and right click on the juno exe and see if you can open with WINE.

I live in washington and we here a have a free ISP called NoCharge internet... And it does work on linux if you can configure your modem and your modem is compatible.
Lindows (Now Linspire I do believe) is Linux, so, the Juno build that is released for the Debain package managing system. So if you had a Debain based system, then you could probably use the Lindows version. Else you may have to do some messing around with the .deb package.
Also, kppp should be able to dial the Juno access numbers, as long as you know the number, username and password, then again, I don't use Juno, or kppp (I have broadband. :-D) so I don't know.

Juno doesn't install correctly with linux.... even with wine. you can't use the access numbers without the proprietary program. so I'm having to look for another internet provider...
Run ethereal on your windows boot. Run it before and throughout the dialing proccess. This should give you sufficient information to see what exactly is going to the server and back to you to get you connected. There are a few tutorials on Ethereal in the tuts section here, so use them to get it up and running. If you need help figuring out everything in the output post it on here and we can help.
schumanusa is quite right.. well almost right. juno does use encryption but there are ways to get the true username and password to make a straight DUN.. one that will work with linux (or windows) however, once juno sees you using it and go over the 10 hrs/month the DUN will die. (usually within about 2-3 weeks) then you'd have to make new ones. I won't go into the process of how to obtain the encrypted UN/PW here in this open forum as I don't think it would be "prudent" (hehe, to quote GW Bush) to post it on a security forum.. Even though there aren't laws specifically against this.. if one does not have the juno software installed, it still sorta/kinda violates the TOS of juno/netzero/UOL (united online is the parent company of both)Quote:

here's what I will do though.. I'll post a few username/passwords and since I'm sure others might "play" with these, and they'll soon die, I'll also PM you some others. I would not use the juno access numbers, they'll die sooner.. use uunet access numbers.. Access numbers for MSN (microsoft network isp ) should also work as most are uunet/worldcom numbers.

you know. I appreciate you guys for giving me ways to make juno wor for me. the thing is that I'm not trying to get around juno's security.... I'm trying to find a safe (not filling my computer up with spyware, etc) ISP that I don't need to install a *.exe to use.
