roughly 75% of that list is port related issues, not "program crashes" issues, although I did find it amusing that the office suite was in that list.
Let us not forget Nmap.
I don't plan on using the MS firewall anyway, so I guess it doesn't affect me to much...
Hey guys, something odd here. We have some new Dell XP Home laptops here, so I'm trying to test one with SP2. Now here's the odd part. Control Panel --> System shows me at SP1 (of course, haven't updated). AutoUpdate's on, but hasn't done anything. Went to Windows Update, and get prompted the usual Express/Custom install, and then -- no updates available?! Where'd it go?
try this link: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
They may have dropped v4 already and are in the process of setting v5 up for everyone. You might wait a few minutes and the regular link will work.
Nope, nothing, that's where I was...
Windows update and auto update are not deploying XP SP2 yet, it has been available to developers for about a week on their site and is scheduled to go out on auto update and the update site today last I heard.

SP2 on single machines, due to become widely available from Windows Update today.
you can download xp sp2 here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
it is the 'IT professional version' basically means it is SP2 for all versions of XP, if you use Windows update you will get the express install, ie. if you have XP home you will only download the update needed for XP home. IT pro version is about 280 Mb and I believe when its on the update site the average download will be about 80 Mb , still quite a chunk for dial-up users though.
Heh, try v4, maybe that will make it work? Just an idea. I just tried on this win2k machine and it worked.
Dang it. Well, good job, SDK.Quote:

From what I've heard, Windows Update v5 will only work with Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Windows 2000 and other, older operating systems, will continue using Windows Update v4. I don't know how long that's going to last, but that's the word so far.Quote:

I have SP2 RC2 installed on mine and SP2 has been available to me for 5-6 days, but it won't download.
I first tried to manually download it, but it told me I had to use automatic updates to be able to down load it. I set the automatic updates so it could and as of right now have had 31 failed attempts to download and install the update. I even turned off my firewall thinking it was possible that it was blocking some thing.
I would rather get the update from the Windows update site, as I want to see if it will convert the settings and configuration I have already set, or if I will have to do it all again.
I guess I am just going to have to wait untill they release the update to the regular potion of the update site.

if you remember from some of the initial posts about sp2, microsoft is only allowing 25000 downloads per day until august 25th when they will open it up to 2.5 mil per day -- IDK why, it's just microsoft being microsoft i guess
It's M$ being smart is what it is. Think if there was a bug/security whole in it that got found in the first week. They can have it patched before the general dumbass get's ahold of it.
I had no problem manually downloading SP2 from the MS site and installing it on a machine that had RC2 installed. I did so the first day the update was made available on the MS site. I've also deployed the update to a few other XP machines I manage (which didn't have RC2 installed) without a hitch. In all instances, all original settings were retained (including SP2 specific ones in the case of the one which had RC2 installed). Where are you trying to manually install it from that you're having trouble with?Quote:

The MicroSoft Windows Update site. http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co....aspx?ln=en-us

To help protect your computer, Microsoft strongly recommends that you install Windows XP Service Pack 2. Learn more about what’s new for security in SP2.
Why am I being offered an update that I have previously hidden?
Windows XP Service Pack 2 is an important update to help ensure customers stay secure and up-to-date. Microsoft highly recommends installing this update.
(I don't know why this note is here, I have never hidden SP2 or any other update)
Download and install it now - Currently not available
We are currently experiencing a high level of demand for Windows XP Service Pack 2, so please check back later for availability. We apologize for any inconvenience. If you prefer to obtain SP2 another way, the easiest way to get Service Pack 2 is to turn on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP and it will be downloaded when you are connected to the Internet without you having to take any further action (how does Automatic Updates work?). You also can order SP2 on a CD. Download and install it now
You can use other programs while you wait. If the download is interrupted, it will resume the next time you connect to Windows Update.
You can also enable Automatic Updates to download it for you or order SP2 on CD
What to know before installing…
Download and Install Now
Download and install it using Automatic Updates
If you have Automatic Updates turned on, you don’t need to take any further action for SP2 to be downloaded to your computer while you are connected to the Internet. Depending on how long and how often you are connected to the Internet, it may take awhile before SP2 is fully downloaded. Once SP2 is completely downloaded from the Internet, you will be notified that it is ready to be installed on your computer. You can check your Automatic Updates setting on the Windows Update home page or by following the instructions on the Get computer updates page on the Microsoft Protect Your PC website.
Automatic Updates is the only way to download SP2 from Windows Update at this time. Other methods to install SP2 will be available soon.
Wow, that was way more of an answer than I needed. Simply saying "it's not there yet" would've sufficed. ;) Thanks guys!
Looks like this thing stops file sharing out of the box. Could wreak havoc on small business networks that rely of peer to peer file sharing to operate.
Why not just download it from the link on Microsoft's site?

I will now that you told me the one thing I was so curious about.....that settings and configuration do transfer. I really didn't mind doing them again, but was very curious as to MicroSoft allowing them to be transfered over.Quote:
