No, and there has never been a country that has even come close. Some communes have succeded for a while on a very small scale, but they even tend to break down over time.

In my opinion, "true communism" will never work untill greed and self centered motivation have been bred out of human beings (of course they won't be human any more then).

FWIW, you can't really compare capitalism and communism, they're two different things. The former is a set of beliefs around which you run the economy (based on free market principles) and the latter is a form of government. You can have a command economy without being communists and you can have a communist-style government whilst retaining free market aspects.

Who wants to live in Utopia where everyone is the same and nothing happens outside routine? That is what I envision with the word "Utopia" In my imaginary world I would picture something like a society that allows all things to moderation. Perhaps if I get lost in the mountain around Tibet I may find it some day. :)

Ok, take N Korean gulags for example. Who is keeping head counts the Red Cross? Some of the only proof of most of them are satellite photos, defectors, spies and the people who have managed to escape these slum gulags. How can you have an accurate head count of the yearly incarceration total if most of them are eating each other and dying? I can assure you that our execution rate is way lower than that of N Korea, just a wild guess though. ;)

What the heck does broadband statistics mean anyway? A population massed in urban versus rural geography will have a higher use of broadband. So what? If a large degree of population lives outside broadband coverage areas then the result could show low broad band usage. How that related to communism is beyond me. What would the results be if you compare China with Japan? Who knows, but it would be interesting. It's curious because some time ago Negative used his own country of origin and its broadband prices/availability as a comparison and argument over U.S. capitalism. Know what I say: viva la Cuba!

They may have tones of broadband and no where to go. In the United States 50 million people connect via broadband and 69 million via dial up. Why is that? Dial up sucks?

Canada does lead the us in percentage of household by almost double and their deployment is about 20 - 30 percent higher -at least in 2003 . There are some killer statistics from Canada on statcan.ca btw. I read some interesting marketing scenarios but they were all old. Now in August 2004 Canada is nearing broadband saturation at around 70 percent. While the U.S. has grown 33 percent the past year Canada has only grown 3 percent . So what does that say? You can make statistics read anything you want and Canada made a great effort in delivering broadband over the United States. But it’s a market driven factor, demand has to be high so was the US lacking in demand? Or was it simply the volume in turning up broad band circuits. I think Canadian companies were willing to put up more capitol versus struggling US companies. There hasn’t been a lot of major market movement in Telco over the past few years.

Canada beat us to saturation and Korea beat them. I know for a fact the demise of MCI (sorry WorldComm) had a tremendous effect on DSL rollout in their service areas. Not just to home users but to ISP DSLAMs. In addition I know for fact that Qwest return on initial DSL investment is beyond horrible. Not to mention the in surge of wireless communication via cell phone. In fact their infrastructure was on verge of collapse when first generation DSL components tended to have a much higher support rate than anticipated. ROI, 10 years and a new generation was out that drove demand. Almost a complete loss.

We'll catch up to Canada. :) Our growth rate is what theirs was 3 years ago. Guess we are seeing more tech spending after the event that must not be named. DSL and Cable penatration has been steadily increasing since then.

Hmm you make me think beyond Animal farm. Perhaps a heard of animals is a perfect example of communism. Let's take lions or a pack of wild dogs. They live in communes (packs). Everybody gets to eat and they take care of one another. There is the alpha male that "directs" who gets to eat and when and who hunts versus protecting the cubs. He uses his keen senses to figure out who is the best at each desired job. They all live in peace and harmony that is until the new male lion has had enough and he seizes power away from the current "director" – viva le pack . Hmm come to think of it the pack takes on some very republican issues, so it's not a perfect commune. For instance if a pack member doesn't contribute he will probably be left homeless to fend for himself until a more liberal pack comes along and takes him in and feeds him. In addition only the male will gain the position of “director” if not the species will no longer be able to procreate strong individuals and the pack will die, probably falling victim to another pack who will steal all the females. :D

unfortunatelly,our "pack" is larger than any other animal (except by ants and like) and we have more resources to share beyond food.

So i prefer to get my share without someone dictates (more than currently)

I love the way people in the U.S. just make up facts about Cuba.

First of all Cuba was not Marxist right after the revolution, in fact the embargo started even before Cuab announced that it would be a socialist country, Socialism was introduced after the revolution was judged by Castro to need a humanist character. Marxism-Leninism was practised only in the 70's after much debate.

Castro is not corrupt, hell he got 99% in the last election. Che had no influence over Castro at all, Che simply was in charge of the bank. His death in Bolivia had not too much of an effect other than making him a matryr. Rightfully so, Che is certainly one of my heroes too but to think Castro suddenly went mad with power because Che died is down right hilarious.

After about 40 years of embragos it is fairly hard to survive in the place. There are a lot of people leaving Cuba for other reasons than political ones.
One of the reasons Castro is so popular is because he hasnt giving in to US pressure and also he defeated a hostile invading army. Americas position on Cuba is just a useless left over from the cold war.

Ennis, I alot of what I comment on is first hand experience. While I have never been to Cuba I have been to haiti, and every island in the area and talked to many Cubans over mohito and churrasco. I have watched them demonstrate their dislike for what castro has done to their country from their point of view. As he ages he desires perhaps a better stance on the world but his life has been long and deeds done. Mmmm you should visit Miami some day and delight in those offerings. BTW the US does gives some leeway in sanctions. Food etc is traded. If castro really loved his country and not power he would step down and form a new government and live in peace. The us gains NOTHING in current trade restriction with Castro outside of principle. This is my problem with the U.S. view of Cuba, for example the people who leave Cuba obviously dislike Castro, especially in Miama, most of them were forced out of Cuba. Some had their companies nationalized etc. Of course they hate Cuba, I am not disputing that, I would dispute the fact that the majority of Cuban's dislike Castro.

I mean it would not be difficult to take down Castro in Cuba, the U.S. has been sending people to do it for a long time, trying to start a counter revolution, they even broadcast a radio station into Cuba yet for some reason nothing is done. In 1992 when there was a vote (Cuban democracy being a hell of a lot different than usual models) Castro got 99% per cent of the vote. Now if you look at the history of the revolution Castro is often referred to as the padre, he is essentially the leader of the revolution, there is nobody to replace him as of yet.


The Cuban's are a country who have sought independance from the U.S. after successfully getting rid of the Spanish for almost a hundred years, they do not want the U.S. interfering, they want to do what most countries are allowed to do in the world, decide their own fate.

3) Shipping Since 1992, the embargo has prohibited ships form loading or unloading cargo in U.S. ports for 180 days after delivering cargo to Cuba. This provision has strongly discouraged shippers from delivering medical equipment to Cuba. Consequently shipping costs have risen dramatically and further constricted the flow of food, medicines, medical supplies and even gasoline for ambulances. From 1993 to 1996, Cuban companies spent an additional $8.7 million on shipping medical imports from Asia, Europe and South America rather than from the neighbouring United States.

4) Humanitarian Aid Charity is an inadequate alternative to free trade in medicines, medical supplies and food. Donations from U.S. non-governmental organizations and international agencies do not begin to compensate for the hardships inflicted by the embargo on the Cuban public health system. In any case, delays in licensing and other restrictions have severely discouraged charitable contributions from the U.S."

You realize Bush has tended toward relaxing cuban bans? I didn't know the mighty Clinton was so hard on Castro? That facts seem to be this. There are conduits in place to not deny medicine to cubans. Never was, but unforseen circumstances like companies closing (outside us control) or Europ-American mergers (outside US government control) have changes the field somewhat and I am not even going to research the intricate documentation necessary to accept that so I'll take your word. :) Perhaps some change is necessary, but Castro could still step down and perhaps that is why the readical right thinks Bush is soft on castro, perhaps he's looked at these things but I am speculating. Bottom line is this companies can ship supplies to Cuba and not effect US relations if the CHOOSE too.

This should give you a hint, there is no democratic society that gets that results unless its being forged somehow.

I think forging results at 99% is hardly something any country would do, like it or no Castro is now a very politically experienced politician, perhaps too much.

I guess the fear Cuban's have and the people defending the revolution is that when Castro goes and he will be dead soon anyway is that the U.S. will invade, perhaps doing the same kind of thing they did with Iraq.

I mean they will need to replace Castro with somebody just as charismatic and powerful, you need people like that when your country is under so much pressure.

If I remeber correctly didnt president Marco in the phillipenes win once with a result like 75% sometime in the 80s. Not too bad except the opposition got 60%. I suspose that is what you call a record turn out.

Why would the US invade Cuba? We have better interest in Haiti, which is absolutely the worst place I have ever been in my life. Cuba is a golf club compared to that place and is right in line with other nations in the Caribbean. Heck we could crank up propaganda to induce the people of Puerto Rico to become the 51st state or "invade" the Bahamas or much larger targets like Dominica. All of those are just as unlikely and imaginary.

What could happen is a more violent and controlling individual or group seizing power in a coup, much like Castro or Saddam did. Which would force more and more people to cross the Ocean, and then we may act (after the UN passes 270 resolutions over 10 years). OR the large Cuban population in Miami could pressure and wage a propaganda war to gain support to "assist" a new government after Castro. Or some really decent guys get in office and Cuba gets a new stance with the US. People go home and all trade sanctions are dropped. To say a man with ABSOLUTE power is not corrupt is challenging. They exist, Castro is not one of them and Cuba’s real problems started with the collapse of mother Russia.

You know its pretty hard to make up your mind about who to vote when the ballot looks something like this:

Well let's just say the recent mention of biological weapons etc. by Bush and his team suggests that Cuba maybe on the list of nations who don't agree with the U.S. and are thus eligable for invasion.

I've never watched the O'Reilly Factor, but I hear its a pretty decent show. No I've never read anything about the Cuban Democracy neither...

I guess the fear Cuban's have and the people defending the revolution is that when Castro goes and he will be dead soon anyway is that the U.S. will invade, perhaps doing the same kind of thing they did with Iraq.

Cubans use Belgian law to file case against Castro

The complaint, which covers alleged false imprisonment, murder and torture, was handed to an investigating judge at the Brussels criminal court. He will decide whether the case against the 75-year-old Communist leader is admissible.

"No one is above the law and that applies in particular to Castro because for more than 40 years, he has tortured 100,000 of his countrymen," said Larry Klayman, a U.S. lawyer representing 10 plaintiffs.
