Here's a suggestion. I think it would be good if posts more than one month old (except tutorials) should not be able to assigned antipoints. Here's why. We've all said stupid stuff, right? Stuff that's gotten us negged. Well, do you really think it should be able to affect you months down the road? I mean, you said it, got negged, paid the price, does it have to continue for a long time? Just a thought. Post your comments or suggestions!

very good suggestion... and everyone knows why because as you said, weve all said things like it :p
but instead of say one month, why dont we make it one month of the post being 'inactive' or even a fortnight... only because the post may very well be active and still taking comments then to shutout AP's while its still active...
Also, what happens if say, the original post is 1 month, and the last post is 2 days old.... will the AP's be denied because of the age of the original post, ..... in other words would it affect individual posts or the whole thread..
I don't think this idea will work .. what if you post something that doesnt help someone for a couple of months then someone finds it useful oneday and they want to assign you positive aps but they cant because they cant assign them. If you say something dumb that gets you negged just delete the post. It may offend people 2 months down the track so if you have not deleted it by then you deserve to get negged IMO :)
Hmm. The first part is a good idea, but would prevent a troll from being negged if he started bumping old posts. My idea is that you cannot assign AP's to a post if that paticular post you are trying to assign AP's to is more than a month old.Quote:

That is a plausible scenario, but probably won't be too common, but here is a workaround: What if you could only assign Positive AP's to a post greater than a month old? I'm trying to be open here so we can find something that works and possibly approach the devs or something. I still prefer the other way, but I'm trying to find a way to prevent the "grief" old bad posts can bring. While you could just delete your post, I try not to because someone reading the thread could be very lost without your post...Quote:

but can we add that much detail to the AP system for each individual post, or do items like your suggesting only come at 'thread' level control???

Fother Mucker ain't even been here but a few weeks (unless this is a new account) and yet he's already makeing suggestions about what should be added here. First off, if a post is pure crap then that is what AP is around here for... if its good then people should have the right to speak out and thank 'em with a green colored *.gif if they want, no matter if it's a month old... this is another reason why AP is around. You might as well get rid of the AP system if its such a bummer to you people, seriously.
So you posted something lame and someone neged you for something you probably deserved anyways, boo hoo big deal... get with whatever bit of a life you have and move on. Im tired of this crap. We just changed around the AP system like what? What? A week or two ago? Give JupM a dang break, they've done nothing but try to make things work here, make money, and as far as all of this AP whineing has gone... they've tottaly kissed ass on the subject. I don't remember JP changeing the site on a weekly basis everytime someone had a problem with it.

take one stop back and think about what you saying for a second. you should know better than to say things like that, and apart from that, its only ONE persons opinion and all that theyre trying to do is impove on something they think can be improved. so why is that such a big deal??
secondly, yes.. there have been 00's if not 000's of posts about people bitching to the AP system. it has been suggested it be removed modified etc and im talking about comments made 3-4 years ago... and its still going........
i think from now on everyone should just accept the fact that its here and we have to deal with it.... just like LIFE

I am all in favour of change if it is for the better. Change for the sake of change is pointless, a waste of resource, and frequently counter-productive. If it ain't broke, don't fix it?
Secondly:
It is always better to address the cause of a problem rather than its symptoms.
The answer is to remove that ludicrous "karate kid" message regarding "balancing". Not only does it insult the intelligence, it encourages less knowlegeable people to trawl the site looking for something to dump negative APs on.
I feel that time barring AP assignments will only bring that process into real time, and will create more "victims", as posts that normally would not be negged, will be. Fine if you want to restart alliances and AP wars, great if you want to drive away potentially useful contributors...............but I do not think that is what AO wants to achieve.
It would not require changing any algorithms, just getting rid of the message.
If people wonder why their APs don't count as much as others it is because:
1. They have not Read The Fine Manual
2. WE don't like them
Let them take their pick.
From a slightly different angle I would expect that the posts on a "professional" site with "professional" members would display a strong degree of positive curtosis, rather than be represented by a Normal or Poisson distribution, as is implied by the current algorithms.

Excellent idea about the Karate Kid message. What you said is true, it's encouraged me to look around for people to neg before. I normally don't neg people, but that message causes me to. And what you said about my idea causing people to just start negging people whos current posts wouldn't normally be negged is probably true. I hadn't thought of that at all, but you're right. Well, one thing you'll learn quick around here is that you can't please everyone. Some people will be determined not to like you no matter what you do. However, as long as you generally try to contribute, you'll never get enough negs to actually do you any harm, as the rest of us will be supporting your good efforts. So, I really wouldn't worry about those threads. It's rare anyone gets negged for an old thread anyway.

ugh im sorry horrible suggestion. what if someone benefits from your year old post and wants to give you greenies. for another, if you said something dumb it can only be negged enough until it is closed.
I see where he is coming from with this idea, but after reading the posts I must agree.."If it ain't broke it don't need fix" I know I haven't been around to see much of the changes but I'm sure that the JUPM staff are working long and hard to improve this site in any way possible, but ideas like this aren't the type that they should be wasting their time on because APs are just .gifs and will remain that (at least untill they make us 3d glasses for the computer :O then they'll be 3D gifs :p).
I didn't read any part of this thread except the first post so it's probably been said. I go through a lot of old posts and when I see somethin really good I green it. I vote nay.
