The database hung up for a bit, it's all better now. I'm not entirely sure why this happens on occasion ... it's probably time to dig around and find the root cause, look for a preventive solution.

If AO is growing and more and more people are signing up (which they are) then it is a shame that there are probably no more than 50 people that post :)

these stats are available on the front page .. as for total members .. i dunno ..
There are other (more likely IMO) reasons for such errors than ultra-rapid membership growth. Queries which result in indefinitely locked tables when certain circumstances are met, for instance.
About a year or so ago the total members were over 200,000. I don't know why they quit posting it on the front page. I would like to see that again, not that it is helpful to know this number, but it was sort of interesting.
it would be interesting to see how much it has grown .. and perhaps monthly growing stats .. just for interest sake

I agree... but with some kind of inactive user deletion.... if not the statistics will not be realistic.
Yeah it is interesting to see on any big community site like this one. But then you have people like me who posted a bunch and then leave without warning. And then we come back to post some more lol.

Mnstrgrl (sp?) said that we'd be able to see how many total members as well as other statistics when she implements our "stats" page.
Pruning back the database of dead users probably wouldn't be a bad idea, but I will put a $20 spot on it not happening. If you were to clean up that 200k member list it would probably drop to maybe 500 real posters, the rest just lurkers who came intially for the files area or to 'try to learn how to hack'. Unfortunately a set of forums with 500 posters and maybe 100 active posters doesnt sound nearly as inticing to potential advertisers as a "Massive security site with over 200,000 members!"

Then they must have trimmed the fat. I remember when JP still owned AO that there was a really big deal when the user base reached 100,000. I tried to search for the actual thread where JP announced this, but was unable to find it. I have never been very good at finding old threads since JM purchased this site. Maybe they are in an archive that our standard search can't use?Quote:

Maybe it didn't happen because AO never really hit 100k actual members? I seem to recall there being some iffiness with the validity of the stats of AO when JP was trying to sell it, as well as some kind of legal dispute between him and Jupiter Media based on said numbers. From what the posts and IRC conversations I saw said, it sounded like JP was creating fictional users to up the user count in a cash grab effort, as well as claiming traffic amounts they didn't see when they took it over. It's all old BS, and pretty much irrelevant now.Quote:

Staff: 10
Regular Users: 59567
Banned Users: 521
Other: 33499
'other' mostly means users who've registered but haven't completed their account activation.
I'll make this info available in a regularly updated way for you guys soon ... the stats page just keeps getting pushed down on my to-do list.
