First, welcome to the forum, i hope you enjoy your stay here.
Second, this is a security forum, not a skiddie forum.
None of the members here encourage anyone to do things that are illegal with his knowledge, better yet, we all reject it.
perhaps if you would have a legit reason for doing this, you might get some response, but the only response you will get with this question is flaming / nagging!
i suggest you go and google for your problem, cause no one here is going to help you with your pathetic "hack"-attack!!!
regards
WhiteHat_h4xx0r, cdr-w, ftp, external hardrive, gmail:p ? What OS are you using?
What in the hell does that mean and were did you get that from? I must have read a totally different thread.Quote:

er....wtf are you talking about White Scorpion. where did i say anything illegal in my post? If you could that out for me please... and i have been here a lot longer than you have under the name 01001101 so take me like a n00b.
Im using Windows XP Home Edition. its a shared computer so Its hard for me to do anything to it becuase if I accidentally mess it up i'll be in big trouble. How much would a external hard drive cost?
An external drive is a normal HDD with an external case. so your looking at $$ for HDD and depending on brand etc extra for the case. sorry i cant help as we are in differnet countries and im sure the prices vary accordingly.
if your going to buy a HDD to backup all the data, why dont you just swap the drives in the machine, and setup your own OS on the new drive. that way when you have to return it to normal state, just re-replace the drives :P

there are several ways to back up things....all depends on what you want to backup??
If is just data...depending on the size...you can either ..
get another harddrive...and copy the data over.
Slave the drive into another machine and copy the data over
or us a cd\dvd burner....and copy the data over.
Or you ccan use a tape backup and software program..lots of $$$$$
If you want to get rid of all remnants of malware on the machine...just take the data.
Also you cannot backup software installed by just copying the folder....it needs to be reinstalled and registered into the registry
You will have to reformat, install your os..then install the apps again.
Then restore the data..point the apps to the restored data ..and you rocking.
I have had some success though with copying the C:\program files\app folders and after reinstalling the app...drop the copied app folder on top of your new install...sometimes this
can restore certain configuration\custom settings for that peticular app....
If you dont trust the system you are backing up...just grab the data cause you could bring all the crap you are trying to fix over by grabbing other stuff...like the registry\ system etc
IMHO

then you must know how to ask things, and THIS is NOT a good question:Quote:

and you already editted it, so that says that you agree with my statement!Quote:

but as you say after your edit:
this IS a normal question, but the one you asked before (bummer i didn't quote you the first time), wasn't!Quote:

with 18 posts you mean? don't make me laugh, this is my other account ;)Quote:

I know i didnt have many posts but thats becuase i was a newbie at this sorta stuff, but i have surfed the forums for a long time untill i stopped in 2003 to start on my website.
and i never edited anything except the word hard drive which i had mispelled as hardrive, which i do sometimes. I never asked any question that was illegal. I dont know what your talking about with the
I thought you may have been taking the "get rid of other users and any spyware/adware/viruses" wrongly like i was trying to hack someones PC but like i said this is a shared computer and once i get to have it theres no reason why there should be other users. and the only reason you didnt quote it is becuase it was never there.Quote:

I always had the
part of my question, thats what i started this topic on. you just wanna act all tough to try and prove your error that you made wasnt an errorQuote:
Whats the best way to externaly back up files?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm thinking of backing up stuff like
- Images (.jpg .gif .png etc)
- Music (.mp3 .wav .wmp etc)
- Videos (.mov .mpeg .avi etc)
- Game files (.map .dds .ksml etc)
- MSN Messenger files (apps, contact lists etc)
and probly some other stuff i cant think of right now
WhiteHat_h4xx0r: I think the dude is simply misjudging based on your nickname choice as I might have done as well. If you have been around AO as long as you claim or you had another account or whatever, then you'd know names like that aren't exactly taken very friendly-like.
Just trying to help. ;)
ya i know i wanst gonna use this name but someone had already taken the name WhiteHat but ive asked a mod if they could delete that account becuase i have noticed they have never posted here and signed up in 2002. so next time you see me i might have just WhiteHat as a name.
Well, WhiteHat_haxxor, i might have misread your post, and together with that username it looks very much like some skiddie question who is trying to backup a computer remotely (externally) before he deletes everything on it.
but if you indeed have a legit reason, like you claim you have, then my biggest apologies for the mistake.
Now what exactly is your problem?
you want to backup an external machine, or an external harddisk?
for an external harddisk i would suggest ghost, since ghost can read usb/firewire disks.
if you want to backup an external system remotely, then i suggest you ask the person who does have physical access to it, since it will be a time consuming thing IF it is possible.
OR you could make a backup remotely, meaning you control the remote system and tell some backup software to make a backup on its own harddisk.
hope this helps ;)
I want to take files that i have created and stuff that i have downloaded and save them somewhere else so i can wipe the hard drive
and the harddrive is an external drive?
then why don't you just copy the files to another location / cd?
no...i dont have an external hard drive i wanna know whats the best way to back up files externaly. as in should i put them on CD-RWs, external hard drives, zip drive etc
just buy an external hard drive and back them up, when you need them, disconnect from the internet, copy them , remove the hard drive, connect back online....all you have to worry about is physical security....
I think you mean zip disks, which are about 100 megs ? i'd rather choose CD's.....Quote:
, zip drive etc
I'd go external hdd for my first choice .. or for my second chioce ... depending how much shite you have .. chuck it all on dvd's :)
Not only are Zip Disks only 100 or 25, they are also very expensive media, and the drives are quite fragile.
Your best bet is to get a HD from a local store (used), and just copy stuff onto it. $10 should get you at least a 10 gig.
yes, i would also prefer dvd's / cd's or an external harddisk. but dvd's cd's at first, since you can not accidentally overwrite them again (if you use cd-r instead of cd-rw ;)), and an external harddisk could be accidentally overwritten if you still use space for something else then just your backups.
i have my backups of really important stuff on 3 or 4 different places, this way when something crashes or got overwritten, i would still have a backup. so i would say, get a dvd and burn it on there, you could even encrypt it to be absolutely sure it is safe.

do i have to have an OS on that Hdd or do i just have to "drag and drop" the files? Also im a little worried that some viruses or spyware/Adware may spread to the disk im copying to, is that possible?
yes it sure is, but you still haven't told me if it is an external hdd like a usb one. or an external system.
I all ready told you....Quote:

oh yeah, sorry bout that, have had a lot on my mind lately :(
well, i suggest you copy the files you need to a cd/dvd. if you want to backup a complete OS, use ghost to create an image, and put that image on the cd/dvd.
you can always do a virusscan on the files before you back them up. but copying a file won't activate a virus, only running it, so you should be save if you copied them.

Start at the beginning mate!.............housekeeping ;) Get rid of all the temp files, obsolete downloads and so on. Then sort your stuff into new folders that make sense to you.
You will then see the size of the issue. If you only have a small amount of files then a CD/DVD solution would be best. Make sure you test the media AFTERWARDS to make sure that it has worked
My personal approach would be to get another internal drive and use this to back up your stuff. That will be cheaper than an external drive. If you are going to continue sharing this machine, I would look at getting the chasis that supports a removable HDD. This is just an ordinary internal drive mounted in a cradle and chasis that lets you take the drive out when you are not using it. They cost around $15-20. You might like to compare the cost with an external drive.
just a thought :)
