Uh... No. That'd be pirating. LC is a "paid" product. Cain and Abel however is free for those who want to test their users passwords. :)
lc for free? I think version 2.X was free :D if you can dig it up...
I believe LC has a free trial period but brute force is disabled, I've found cain and able to be quite adequate.
If your just trying to audit your password with brute force, john the ripper is hands down the fastest.

Hogfly is correct, you can get source for v2 ... might be worth paying for current version (5) - better functionality
But you'd need [as I have learned the harder way] an application for extracting the LANMAN hashes from SAM, in case you're running Win2k/XP. Otherwise John is best for single-machine use.Quote:

If you are going to pay for something, maybe you should go with SAM Inside, it has distributed capabilities and is written in assembly language for better performance. I have used LC5, Cain and Abel, and SAM Inside and seem to prefer SAM Inisde.
Can SAM inside use rainbow tables? Have you ever tried rainbow tables on LC5?
Cain and Abel can use Rainbow Tables. I wasn't aware however that LC5 could as well (then again the last full version of LC I used was 2.5).
But:Quote:
Pre-computed Password Tables
Uses pre-computed rainbow tables that contain trillions of passwords.
Enables rapid auditing and recovery of even complex passwords.
For more information, see our FAQ “What is the Pre-computed Password Hash Table?”.
Quote:
* Pre-computed password tables are not offered with the "LC 5 Professional" edition.

Hi,
if you want to do a one time audit, I'd also take a look at Elcomsoft's Proactive Windows Security Explorer... its very similar to LC and you can download a free 30 trial with no limitations...:

LOL...I would love to hear you come up with a legitamate reason for needing to run cain and able off of a usb drive. PLEASE come up with one, its gonna be hilarious...
Um it is actually really funny and it is legitamate reason i take vocatinal schooling for computer networking and my teacher has set a challenge of sorts to see who the first perosn to get him admin password will be. see legit :D
But i dont think i am going to do it that way i got a LC4 trial vershion and i am going to get the hash with that then bring it home and get the password from their but if any one knows how i could run cain and able from a usb device i would really like to know(Just for the sake of learning thow :D )
Making us do your homework isn't making it any more OK.
SAM Inside (http://www.insidepro.com/eng/saminside.shtml) cannot use rainbow tables. However, if you really want to use rainbow tables, I would suggest going to http://www.rainbowcrack.com/download...594356efd97717
and getting the rainbowcrack-1.2a-win program which comes with a generator and a cracker. LC5 costs way too much to be used on a personal level (or probably business level) and its features are not really impressive, but somewhat convenient for a new user.
how is that making you do my homework.
Riot,
It seems that if this is for educational reasons, then you wouldn't be trying to run it from a USB drive to start with. You probably will not be able to get this to work, because you will still have to make all the registry additions to the OS. It's like you are trying to get around the requirement of having administrative access in order to install Cain and without an OS exploit of some kind, you are out of luck unless you pull the hard drive out or use some alternative boot method. Also, unless your teacher has very very easy passwords, you won't get it with the trial version of LC4 because of the brute-force attack being disabled.
OK,
@ work i need to admin quite a few cisco routers. These days they are all behind a radius server login. Now it can happen the radius-server is unreachable, in which the routers go verifying the local accounts.
SO there i sit with a level 7 password out of my configs but not able to remember the local login anymore. There I use cain. Legit enough ? I think it is. :p
Cheers
