Whoa, you want too make an XP HE machine an FTP server? Ummmm,.....Damn.
Search Google for Bullet Proof FTP client, it should come with a trial edition of the server too. You may want too go too a Minister and get some Holy Water.

gore I'm running an XP machine as a ftp server without problems (so far)
am using Filezilla server and DirectUpdate to take care of the updating of my DynDNS (on adsl so IP tends to change every now & again if i disconnect for too long)
http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ <- filezilla
http://www.dyndns.org/comtransition/ <- incase you dont have a static ip addy

thank you for your input gore and valhallen , im gonna use it to strickly share music with my friends ,so not too concerned with people coming on it and causing trouble ,ty again,if i come accross anything intresting with me running windows with this ,ill lety ou know

I use Cerberus and have used it for about 2-3 weeks without reboot... very good, free, and easy control and setup...
And I don't see anything wrong with running an FTP server off Windows.... since I run one probably. =P

slimftpd
www.whitsoftdev.com
use it for my personal ftp server...VERY small
but you have to edit the config file by hand....which is sometimes better
and it is really easy to use
download, unpack, run the service tool, edit the config file, and either reboot or start the server
il give you an example of the section where you as a user to help you out
<user "hex">
password "antionline"
mount C:\ftp /
allow / read list
deny / write
</user>
simple eh?
good luck

If you are worried about someone trying to come into the FTP site, and you probably should be, you could always set your firewall to port forward another port on the outside to port 21 on the inside. Its not the best solution but every little bit helps:)

Gore: You surprise me..... Properly configured, secured and patched and you can run any public service you like on XP.

Thanks gore. I was looking for something like DynDNS. Never came across it before though. On and ADSL myself, and the IP is forced to change every 20 or so hours. This should do perfectly cos i want to host my website off my own PC =) (not my everyday use PC, but a box that I want to use for this specifially. w00t apache!)

For ease of setup and ease of use Bulletproof-ftp is a good choice.
I have used ws_ftp bulletproof-ftp blaze-ftp ect ect ect.
For me bullet-proof was the best and through talking to friends i understand it is the most secure too...though i feel you cannot beat a http server....they (in my experience) tend to be faster and you also get to build a cool website and host it from your home pc...assuming your isp dont block you....or phone you up asking funny questions...(some isp's dun like you doing it :)
-
oh just another thought....you may want to look into www.no-ip.com and www.dyndns.org .....they both provide cool services for ip resolving...especially dyndns ...basically you create a free account with them...and they then resolve your ip address to a url ... IE-ftp:junglesftp.kicks-ass.org ;) no-ip .com is cool as it keeps your ip address hidden....as im sure you know your ip address is YOU ...so a service that keeps people from tracing your ip through your ftp addy is gonna be cool...

I now feel like a retard. hehe
