Unless, maybe, you just got told you have an incurable disease that will take a year or two to run it's course and in the meantime you will lose all dignity, be in pain constantly and utterly reliant on the good faith and graces of others... However, he shot himself while he was on the phone w/ his wife. While his son was in the house. THAT qualifies him for loser status. If you want to end your life, fine, but don't do it the most traumatic way possible for everyone you love.

Yeah, but he was mentally unstable. Go read some of his works and then tell me otherwise. Mentally unstable, and a self-afirmed substance abuser, for decades.
Is the world better off without him? Absolutely not. Is he the most courageous, dignified, respectable person, thanks to his choice of actions that ended his life? Same answer. Just cause he was a monumental ******* doesn't mean his views, opinions, or expressions are without merit.

In my opinion you have no right to judge person's life as a meaninless, because he killed himself. People have different views on suicide/life/god. Different cultures paractice ritual suicide. I think that for Thompson it was the ultimate stunt that he could think of since he was already sick. The man redefined "having cojones" in his work and life. Because for YOU it's "ultimate vote of no-confidence" doesn't mean that anyone CARES.
And as far as "The world is a better place without him." goes ..... how dare you say that about anyone SHOW SOME ****ING RESPECT

He was on his last legs, he decided that it would be better to end it at HIS choice of time and place.
Still makes him a loser though.

The guys LSD addled mind was in a deep state of paranoia; it truly was unsurprising news. Especially after he said “Kerry would defeat Bush in a landslide”. Well in his mind the Apocalypse came to pass and it was too much, so he blew his brains out why his child was at the table eating Captain-Crunch or whatever… That movie limns a LSD trip so good it caused a fulminant mood of uneasiness in me. :eek:

My take: Another idiot took the coward's way out. No big loss, he's doing a better job as fertilizer than he ever did in the human race anyway; for examples look at how he treated his family when he offed himself.
Hunter S. had a huge gift. He was able to observe as a participant. That was the type of journalism that became his trademark. Those currently attempting to do this are just wannabes. We can only wish for the directness and honesty from our so-called broadcast journalists and newpaper reporters today.
I wasn't able to read Hunter's take on the 1972 presidential candidates until well after the election (I was in Vietnam and information was censored). Evidently, not enough citizens read it during the campaign, either. Nixon was re-elected.
I don't agree with or condone his appetites, and I think that had a lot to do with people not taking him seriously--he alienated the mainstream.

Fertilizer I said, and fertilizer remains. The man killed himself while in direct contact with his loved ones. What kind of a mess do you think his kid'll grow up to be? How many YEARS of therapy will his wife have to go through? Obviously he sucked at being human - this complete lack of regard to the folks he was supposed to have loved is prove beyond any doubt. Worm food and eventually fertilizer is precisely where this guy belongs. As for your rogues gallery - so? How many of them offed themselves in front of their spouses? I bet even Hitler had the balls to off Eva first before doing himself in.

RE: Hitler - I used the referent RCGreen added as another famous suicide case. That's what he had to do with it. A prime example, being that even in the throes of his insanity, he still didn't use the same heinous method your hero did.
For the record, I hold your hero in complete contempt for this one act, which far overshadowed any good he ever accomplished that I know of. Sorry, but it's that serious. As I tried to broach in the 'suicide' thread that's been ongoing here for some time now, If you're gonna do it, by heaven do it, but don't involve others. Go off in the woods somewhere where nobody can find you and complete the task. It perhaps effects me a bit deeper than others - I witnessed a guy who doused himself with gasoline and set himself on fire right in front of his wife. She *still* sits in the local mental hospital, and the incident was over 20 years ago.

I loved Thompson as a writer and I loved Thompson as a psychonaut.
But most importantly, I loved him as one of God's children and as a fellow human.

LOL... I make (nearly) homemade pizza from the Jiffy pizza mix, and instead of using water to make the crust, I warm up some hieniken dark in the microwave and use that. Does it make a difference? Who knows. I just do it on general principle..
