There's been a little talk on quantum computers and computing lately and I've posted on this subject before...so...for those who are interested...

Yeah quantum computers may be the reality but it is does not seem to happen in the very near future. Only theoretical background has been made as far as DNA Computers and Quantum Computers are concerned but still technology has to improve a lot to make this a reality.
I was under the impression that DNA computers have already been made. The main problem with them is that synthesizing DNA is _expensive_.

DNA computers are very good a carring out simple tasks millions of times. I think they are parellel computers.
Synthesising DNA specific to your task would be quite difficult but when you have the molecule you need it is quite easy to replicate it with TaQ polymerase kits.

It's difficult to grasp a working quantum computer. In fact, if we figure it out we could use any object as a computer. This desk for instance and I could transmit the information to unknown parts of the universe, although trasmission isn't a real good decription, it would just happen. In fact I don't have to do anything, that is already being done. For every measured event here in my office, there is another at some uknown location is space time. To quote Bill.... "ack, pfft"

Once every person comes to realization that they exist in their own personal reality and they directly and indirectly affect every aspect of their known existance, including other peoples lives, then we will be closer to a unilateral understanding of universal consciousness.
It requires more than a bit of open mindness. :) I don't buy the universal consiousness bit though, if anything quantum mechanics is universal unconsciousness. Random equations driven by probability. On the extreme end, infinity improbability.
No doubt the concepts of teleportation and string theory are related to quantum mechanics in physics. But the thing which this thread is intended for is latest in computing technologies. Quantum mechanical phenomena/equations/principles are behind the development of quantum computers but there is a long road ahead yet till one gets to the destination.

True this thread is about applying quantum principles to computer securty. But how do you manipulate a state that is imeasurable? The road is infinitely long because we don't have a destination.

Looks like a good book. I would wager nanoparticles are closer to reality than a quantum computer based on quantum theory. They are "sort of" apples and oranges from this perspective. I'll see if I can get that at the library sometime.
Yeah, I said the same thing when I saw the price. I'm going to try and find it at my metro library when I get the time. It's more targeted to the student as an introduction from fundamental principles, and as a basis for understanding nanoparticle behavior.

Which would explain why my cousin said the whole lab is grounded and that all their work is done in a sunken freezer at temperatures 0.0? degrees Kelvin, so when they fabricate their devices with electron beam lithography it's stable enough to manipulate.
YES - Some technology to isolate the physical universe would be necessary to actually use a quantum computer, a slight temperature shift of say .00001 would destroy data held in quantum suspension.... should something ever be dreamed up. Of course if we could isolate and manipulate the quatum universe then we would be in the realm of "Q" anyway and we could isolate a bit of space time and turn it into a computer and never know it's there.
from the way it sounds its extremly unstable. do you really think that just because we have the technology that we should use it. granted it is still only in a minture state the concepts of this new computer are endless with no way of securing or controling and information stored in it. It sounds to me like a giant storage building with an infinate amount of doors. It might just be me but i find "supercomputer" is a little bit of an understatement.

Isn't is funny that superconductors operate a such a low temperature. By that I mean the reason it's called absolute zero is because the atoms have slowed down so much that they are almost in suspension. And along comes a superconductor. Crazzzzy. :D
Speaking of nanoparticles, have you guys heard about the nanoparticle storage devices in dev? Basically, nanotubes sit somewhere, and when an electric signal goes through the electrode right next to it, the nanotube is pushed down and away, which puts it into the "1" position. Even when the electricity is taken away, it's still in the same position. It's thought that this could lead to instant on computers. Basically, it takes the advantages of magnetic, optical, and flash and throws them all together in a VERY good storage solution. 10 BILLION bits on the size of 1 DVD and that's right now in begining dev. Who knows what they'll be hitting when this stuff hits the market... Company name is Nantero if you're interested.
Another incredibly interesting thing is nanotube wires. The wires would be made from nanotubes aligned in a certain way, and would cause near zero resistance, which means LOTS of power saved on the big mass transport power lines that run the power grids. It's basically a superconductor that DOESN'T need to be practically frozen to work.
Both of this came from the mag Technology review. If you're interested in this stuff it's DEFINITLY a good buy. $30 subscription, but it's worth it. Not filled with ads, but filled with text. I love it. It's published out of MIT.
Also, superconductors do not run AT absolute zero, they run near it. No one has hit absolute zero yet. The closest they've got is 4 K I believe, though don't quote me on that. I know it was <10 K.

True but it's common to use the term since it's damn cold. I do remember an experiment where they hit absolute zero at the microscopic ends of lasers in Boulder Colorado. I say they hit it but it was a billionth of a degree above absolute zero. DAMN close to call it perhaps? They did this to see an experimental theory of Einstein and Bose. This involves early prediction by Bose on how atoms should behave. While observing the energies of light they thought that similar theories should hold true to an atom. Ironically enough this leads to the very essense of the Bohr Model and the term quantum leap, and where one must also "leap" away from classical Newton based atomic physics. Particles are held in certain "allowable" orbits and leap for orbit to orbit using stepped energy levels. (basic I know but I can't remember every detail :D)Quote:

But anyway... they set out to prove the Bose Einstein condensation, where at low energy levels the atoms would be like a bunch of bouncing balls all crashing to the floor at once. And when they are down there in the same space, they will all be the same. And that could be used to make tiny structures like computer chips and atomic keys etc. We humans only started making them in 1995 so we don't know what to do with them yet. But we did the same thing for light, in regards to creating a way to make all particels the same, and the result was a LASER. Eistein missed the the reality of what he was saying since the atoms would kind of all come together. He really was a genius wasnt he? He wrote the theory of relativity while working in a mail room. hiding his papers in a desk.
I wish they taught this stuff when I was in school. It's not like it's new, hell Einstein argued furiously against quantum theories. Not that they didn't exist but if an atom took shape (properties) at the time it was measured then it HAD to have some pre-existing shape we can't detect. That is where the term infinite probability comes in. When quantum theory and relativity collide you get and infinite probability of measurable outcome. And Douglas Adams made fun of it's principle, Zaphod for president! Alas it wasn't until the 80s and beyond that experiments could show the indirect observation of probabilty and spring modeles using harmonics versus. At least in a way I could begin to concepualise something totally radical to my long held view.
Arguably in string theory, where energy is sufficient - even at absolute zero - the magnetic strings still ocillate, but these aren't your daddy's magnetic fields. :D Hmm what if absolute zero is like a C universe, where there is a limitation where we can go. Can absolute zero be achieved? Where everything stops and is Zero Kelvin REALLY absolute zero? This is where I lack some info. Even the coldest darkest place of the Universe is 3 degrees Kelvin, and that is pretty constant throughout. Another feather in the cap for the big bang. Residual heat propigated universally.

If I make it into the academy I want to go to for my junior and senior year of HS, I will have physics 1 and 2 at the college level... If not, I take high school phys 1 and 2... I'm really interested in it, though I'm having trouble finding real good information on it web wise... Probably not looking hard enough, but oh well.. I'm also really interested in chemistry... It's amazing what you can make/do with household chemicals...
Speaking of Einstein, I find it really interesting that he was labeled a failure by 3rd grade... He was diagnosed with basically the same as ADD now... He probably had ADD, a lot of incredibly intelligent people do, as they have trouble focusing on anything they aren't interested in...

I guess it depends on your usage of the word universe. I would say that there is something way better than 3 degrees K in the visible/known/observable universe. Maybe in our universe? Perchance out of the spacetime continuum, maybe the place the universe is expanding into or through? How rude of me to post that when I've been saucing. :D I’ll fix what I typed tomorrow.Quote:

Grunt I think to obtain any good reads you might have to buy some books; I think you would be able to get samples in PDF's of a few chapters though. I would find a board to your liking, and ask those college kids what they are reading. Or what they read on the side. That’s what I would do.

Yeah, he later credited his theory of relativity to his slower learning, saying that he could apply a higher, more mature intellect to space and time and whatnot at that age. I didn’t know he had ADD/ADHD. I know they said he was dyslexic, shy, and real brash. I thought they said he was “mind-blind “ as well? He had something similar to autism, like you can’t really take a joke because you don’t really get it. He couldn’t quite read between the lines. If you smiled at him he couldn’t differentiate the smile, he wouldn’t know if it was a sarcastic smile or if was a happy etc…, that’s even if he saw the smile, smirk, etc… They don’t pay attention to that stuff like that.
Yeah... Many great mathematicans are slightly autistic... They aren't to the point where they have real problems operating alone in society... But they are far enough along with it to where they have incredible math skills.
I talked to my science teacher and asked him if he had any physics books in his personal collection, turns out he did: Physics, 5th additions, by Giancoli... Haven't read much of it.. but it seems good... he said it would be good for me because it doesn't go in to a lot of the advanced mathematical concepts, but basically teaches the basics of why everything works and such... The sound chapter is really pulling my interest right now...
Albert was also an extreme pacifist. The events of WW2 changed his reasoning later in life. He was brash with the Nazi party and didn't comprehend the danger he was bringing upon himself. He was born a Jew, you see. Later in life he admited through great pain that sometimes violence was necessary to prevent others from perpretrating the same. He also did not recognize his own celebrity among the world populace. I read a biography once or twice, He was at a theater in Europe and he and a friend wanted to go out for a bit and get back in. He told the doorman that he has lost his ticket and would he remember his face, if he just popped out? The doorman replied something along the lines "of course Mr. Einstein." Not alot of info is available on how he came up with the equations for both general and special relativity. But to come to the conclusions it is thought that he would have HAD to invent many formulas withing the realm of differential calculus. By that I mean that some equations we know that end in results, did not exist in his time. Lol, sorry I am severely interested in the historical context of men like Einstein, Kelvin, Coppernicus, Da Vinci, the greek classics too many to name, Darwin, Curie, Newton etc... Einstein grappled with the emerging quantum knowledge.... what if he lived a little longer? :D
Oh as for reading about alternate universes. Thats a tough one. I have trouble understanding my own. I don't really buy into the ability to touch other universes. I think of the universe as a sort of bag, there could be other bags out there but if they somehow touch then they are no longer different universes.

That sounds a lot like Brane theory (or M-Brane theory). I saw a doc on BB2 about it. It's realeted to string theory apparently. Each universe could actually exist as a 4 or 5 dimension taurus shaped membrane which floats through an 11 dimension space. There could also be an infinite number of other membranes also floating about. If the membranes touch it causes a big bang.Quote:

The Beeb also did a program more recently on Aspergers Syndrome. Aspergers has similar symptoms to Autism. Many people are though to be mildly affect by it. Many of those are believed to be those who are socially awkward but very intelligent. Enstein is one person I remember being mentioned.

It's highly likely there are more than 4 dimensions. I believe that 100 percent. In fact I remember demonstations by another other mighty hero Carl Sagan that modeled a shadow from a multidimentional object. No worries there, in fact time has become so ingrained into our perception that it is directly related to our existence just like the confortable 3 dimensions we are accustomed too. A universe that shared our dimension but not our time would still exist within this bag. Objects within can share our dimension and have an alternate time, such as other galaxies but I would wager they are still within this universe. I read about micro universes existing within one universe but it's still existing within the confines of this one. Perhaps "universe" isn't an accurate description. Having said that; to measure a universe in space beyond our own universal threshold is different It's hard to grasp space, beyond space.
I guess you could argue that a quantum has found several other dimensions. In relation to how we percieve waves moving through space. I say that because a particle emited here, perhaps streaming from Sol could have effects on space or time in another place, in a galaxy far far away. And a long time ago, is our present. To us on earth, Yoda is alive. But he lived a long long time ago. But the particle effect from our sun on their universe would happen in our simultaneous "now" which is Yoda's far future.

I'm not quite sure why you wouln't make it in? If it's a private non public school all they usually want is tuition. But I'm sure you'll make it in. Just make sure you apply to your states school of math and science as well. Every state has one or a few schools for the gifted. My sister went to a school of math and science.
